I'm not a professional. This is the one thing that's worked AMAZING to get my car battery to keep it's charge overnight in cold weather! INCREDIBLE portable jump starters on AMAZON: amzn.to/2NmcOUl (affiliate link)
Car Battery Keeps Dying in the Winter? Here's how you can prevent your car battery from draining overnight by simply disconnecting the negative battery terminal wire, and then you can re-connect the wire to the negative/neutral car battery terminal when you're ready to drive.

"Yes, but": treating the symptom (disc. batt every time vehicle is parked) does nothing but insure the root cause of batt discharge overnight will not be resolved. This is not advice that should be followed. Friend should have said there's a problem with your battery and/or something is draining it while it's parked. A vehicle should be easily capable of being parked for weeks without the batt discharging to the point of failure to start so get your battery tested/replaced if necessary, if that doesn't resolve the problem take it to a mechanic who can test it for parasitic electrical draw. You can disconnect the batt to keep it from draining the batt but that's almost as much of a PITA as jump starting it. THAT's what the friend should have told him. Disconnecting the battery to keep it from draining might be necessary in an emergency but is not an option, long term. I'm embarrassed for the guy who posted this video and for his friend. It's not rocket science to make the connection that a car battery should not discharge overnight. Sheesh.

Better idea, getting a battery disconnect. A little handle that you spin into place, cost about five bucks, and disconnect your battery when not in use without disconnecting the lead itself

Battery drains can be so random it sucks. I had a 1990 Honda Prelude that kept draining the battery and I started removing the negative every night. About 3 months of doing this, and one morning when I connected the negative, my radiator fan turned on. Turned out, power steering fluid had leaked on the fan switch and the fan was randomly turning on at night, draining the battery.
@privatepilot4064
@privatepilot4064 6 ай бұрын
You probably have a parasitic drain somewhere. Something is causing the battery to drain. You should be able to let the car set for weeks without the battery draining too low to start it. That’s got to be a hassle having to disconnect the battery all the time. Mechanics are not in to running down a parasitic drain issue because it involves a lot of work to isolate it sometimes.

This is good advice for anyone (like me) who has a vehicle that is only used every week or two. My '05 Accord Hybrid has always been brutal on 12V batteries; it draws a lot of idle current so unless it's driven regularly, the 12V battery will spend a lot of time not-fully-charged and that destroys lead-acid batteries. But that Odyssey, with the battery draining in less than a day, either has a battery that has already been destroyed, or its idle current so high that it's due to some defect. I should add that with newer vehicles, disconnecting the battery cans cause all kinds of annoyances like lost radio presets and loss of other "customer preference" settings. My Accord doesn't loose its presets, but I have to enter a secret code (which I have memorized) to get the radio working again, and my auto-down windows (a feature I don't particularly like) stop working until they re-calibrate themselves. PS: If you find yourself driving down to AutoZone to get a battery charged more than once a year, it's time to buy a trickle-charger.

my ford mondeo 2004 drained battery through the winter but for some reason.. in the spring it stopped and found out its a small gap either in the trunk or any of the car doors that are open just a few millimeters and it thinks its open, but when you look inside it all seems to be quiet and no lights are on but its draining the battery. if the doors are a little frozen make sure its totally closed if it has been frosted through out the day/night take a hairdryer or a heat gun and warm the rubber strips around the doors (not sure what they are called in english) and wipe them dry after the ice melts. after you have done all that slam the doors shut and maybe that did the trick for your battery drain because it sure fixed mine 😉👍

That sucks. Cars today have battery issues. The old beaters I drove most of my life always started in most weather even without being plugged in. My 12 yr old battery failed for the 1st time on my ‘03 Ford F-150 yesterday. I’m not complaining. My wife’s 2021 Corolla battery died after not being used for a week or so. Not happy. Yeah, well are you ready for this. I did this years ago, and my cable came off the terminal as I was driving. Can you get what else went out as I was driving at about 40mph when this all happened? My power steering, I had to try my hardest to turn the car myself. I was able to halfway turn it into a side parking lot at a store where I then proceeded to run into the curb. An I mean "run" into a curb. I was forced to get a new tire as it blew out my front. An I know I could have slammed in my breaks but I had fast traffic right behind me, I couldn't have put my breaks on. Coasting in that car with zero power is the scariest thing I've ever had happen in a car. No control, no power, just aimless coasting with no turning ability. Tighten your terminals my man. Especially if you have power steering. Good lord

At 1.55 he tells us he drives around with his car battery incorrectly connected, and somehow he thinks he is qualified to give advice on how to prevent your car battery running flat. Those connectors have nuts on them because a tight, close fitting connection is a great way to charge your battery as you drive around and a lose connection like he has isn't. Also, on a modern car having a poorly connected battery can be hazardous to the car itself. Seriously, if you only think you know what you are doing, don't tell others

Trashed Panda, I agree about the importance of a tight connection. But to be fair, in response to, "...somehow he thinks he is qualified to give advice on how to prevent your car battery running flat," he said at 0:30 that he got that advice from a car mechanic. Also, you have to admit that _will_ prevent your battery from running flat. Anyone who knows a _little_ about cars is qualified to give that advice. 😏 I do hear what you're saying, and I *frequently* complain about people talking authoritatively on subjects they know nothing about! But it's different when you're just _relaying_ advice and you cite the source. (I'd also like to think his mechanic mentioned the downsides, and that this tip is just a stopgap. He☝ realizes it, too.)

Why not install those 'screw on/ off' connectors?? Better to get a secondary old but 70-80% battery install with a 'relay' and optional 'screw on/ off' switch. This way de car settings eg. Clock, computer settings are not 'taken off' but relay stops any parasitic draw from starter battery. The option of screw on/ off gives you ability disconnect second battery if you choose to esp. use it for camping use.

Draining a lead acid car battery repeatedly damages them (not so much with a deep cycle marine battery). Eventually the battery after enough drains will die or be incapable of holding the amperage you need. Your 'trick' is a good short term solution, but not a long term one. A loose connection can corrode and also block recharging from the alternator. Turn the car off and with the battery in and all the lights off test the voltages at your fuze box. They should mostly (not the alarm system) be reading zero volts. Any that show voltage flowing are suspect circuits. Most probable causes are a bad relay or switch, or a short somewhere.
