Drive your flyback without building any circuit, you just need an electronic ballast for fluorescent tubes.

Hey all. Just wanted to share : If you use a 120v halogen ballast for 12v halogens, to run your flybach, it will be allright. But if you use a 220-230v halogen ballast for 12v halogens, it will fry the NPN transistors immediately, doo to the amount of current it will draw. You could desolder the transistors and longend the wires and then mount it on a big heatshink with a fan to it. It'll keep them cool enough. I did that and nothing has fryed....yet.
@das2502506 жыл бұрын
You may want to specifically show disconnecting the power to ballast before showing marking the secondary to indicate you are not touching it whilst live or at least stating on screen that power has been physically unplugged . Some people may not understand such basic safety
@alves64654 жыл бұрын
A simple 12v AC transformer would probably work as well (every transfomer is AC before the 12v goes thru the bridge rectifer ) in case you don't have a ballast, so use a regular transformer. The secret is the 12 volt AC, since you need alternate current in order to induct voltage.

Not bad... but are you sure that's not actually 12V halogen lamp ballast though? I have never heard of a 12V fluorescent tube. Putting that aside, you can certainly solder a ground lead to your ground pin but an easier and better idea is to simply cut a wire and without stripping it, jam it onto the pin then secure it with epoxy or hot glue. That way the connection will be well insulated without needing to use shrink tubing or tape.

Have you tried taking off the metal clip from the flyback transformer. I tried and found the flyback works at a cooler temperature which I would suspect would make it last longer.
@ludicscience8 жыл бұрын
+Elecifun Iĺl try
@whatelseison89706 жыл бұрын
The metal clip is what not only holds the two halves of the C-core together, but also keeps the tiny precision air gap spacers in place. Without the clip the spacer on the outside may fall out, altering the performance of the flyback. I've read some things and even done some experiments that indicate that performance gains can be had by altering or even eliminating the air gaps, but there's really no benefit to having the cores randomly falling out all the time. If you energize the circuit without the clip in place the magnetic flux in the core will tend to draw the two halves together, but since it's a rapidly changing field, the two halves will chatter at some multiple of the driving frequency. When that frequency is below 20kHz it sounds more like a squealing hiss. When it's above that frequency you may not even hear it but in general it will gradually wear away the surfaces where they meet. Not recommended.

i know simpler. wind 8 turns. connect one of the ends of the coil to the collector of a transistor, the other end to +5-80 volts dc . connect the emiter to ground and either short the collector and emitter or the base and collector( make sure not to overload the base) for very short time. this way oscillation will occur and if you make arc it will automatically turn off. perfect for safe non-damaging HV power supply
@ludicscience8 жыл бұрын
+Gotin Fuklio You mean the base will not be connected ?

Is it true that these newer style flybacks have built in rectifiers and their output is high voltage DC. Not AC, and thus couldn't be used as a driver transformer for a Tesla coil?
@DJDome1235 жыл бұрын
No,tesla coils use pulsed (AC like) DC ,so use a spark gap and it should work,sine wave AC will not work(not sure about squarewave AC),whatever you do you need abrupt pulses not smooth wave,they actualy work through back EMF. I hope it helps.
