At the beginning of the 20th Century, the term “Pre-Hung Door” didn’t exist. Neither did hand-held routers or routing templates. Hinges were mortised into doors and door frames with keen chisels and skilled hands. Seeing how much time finish carpenters spent laying out these mortises, Stanley Tools invented the Butt Gauge, a tool with two marking gauges and a square all in one compact, apron-friendly tool.
The No. 94 Dual Beam Scribe, is a re-creation of the Stanley #94. The #94 was the second-generation of the Stanley Butt Gauge, patented more than one hundred years ago. Today few of us need to tackle hand-mortising passageway doors, but this clever tool comes in handy anytime you need to mark two different dimensions over and over again.

Still have my old dads Stanley No 95. Still works. The No 95 is better than the 94 which you really should have copied. On the Stanley No 95 although it looks the same as the 94 has two scribes on one of the shafts and one on the other. The single one is for setting the thickness of your butt. The one with the two scribes is for setting the depth of your butt. Once the set up the two scribe shaft will be one end for marking your door and the other end is automatically set. For the door jamb. Only use it for fixed door stops these days as new work is a lot quicker with a trend skeleton hinge jig and router.

What is the difference between a No. 94 and a No. 95? I found an old No. 95 Dual Beam Scribe in my grandpa's old tool box. He was a farmer and cabinet maker by trade. In the summer he farmed and in the winter he built custom cabinets. My dad recently dropped off my grandpa's old tool box. My Grandpa died in 1968. No one had opened his old tool chest since his death. I finally opened the tool chest and cleaned and inventoried what was inside this week. I found a tool as your show but with "No. 95" embossed in the casting instead of "No. 94". What's the diff?

@@WoodpeckersLLC I found that the scribe ends face the opposite way as a No 94. Some else told me that the No. 95 is Butt tool. ???

WoW! only $130, when you can buy the original for $15!!!!! They make some great tools, but sometimes they are RIDICULOUSLY over priced, and this is one of those time!

I think the WP #94 OTT would be better in quality than the original Stanley #94. It doesn't appear to do anything more, but the precision with which it's made will be a couple levels higher. And IF Stanley were to make their version today, it would probably cost much more than $15. There is a company in Australia that sells a version of the #95 Butt Gauge for about $45, it has dual scale markings in imperial and metric, something the Woodpeckers version should have. Making two versions, one imperial and one metric doesn't make sense to me but then I'm not trying to pry every last dollar out of my customers wallet. For ~$130 you should get both imperial and metric scales on one tool.

@@bobd. I have one of the old Stanley's! It is well made, nothing loose or sloopy! As far as the scales on the tool, I have never used the one that is etched or cast into it! I have always used the workpiece that I am cutting to set my gauges from, and most if not all of the woodworkers I know do the same so what the tool has on it is fairly relevant! I paid $12 for the one I have and I got it a little less than a year ago, checking on line I see that the prices are about the same for most listings! A close friend that has a machine shop watched your video and he agrees that you are selling these at far to high of a price as well. I do not have any reservations in saying that this tool is ridiculously over priced!!!!
