My Self Reliance

Building an outdoor kitchen attached to my off grid log cabin, remote backcountry lake trout fishing, bowhunting bears, growing fruit and vegetables and foraging in the wilderness, stewarding the land - I think this is easier than raising livestock and managing croplands.

Both of these gentleman must have been at one time in a great position where they have earned big money. And now have decided to turn their back on that hectic life and find pleasure in this simple way of life . But What do they talk about? Do they talk about the conflict in Ukraine ? It needs a lot of money for this kind of life. What would interest me what tools are they wish they had. Many people cannot afford this luxury. I wish they well and thank them for showing this other side to life. Most people are stuck in Citylife.

It must be easy hunting bears when you cook a pound of bacon outside. They can smell from 20 miles away. Leave a piece of bacon on the skillet cooking slow for a couple hours, they'll show up.

Your pink fleshed trout reminded me of a time when I was 13 or so, I tre trekked about 4 miles down this creak and back with a few worms. I finally came upon a deep spot that yielded me 3 lovely brookies, ( my first). They were about 12-14 inches. When I got them home and proceeded to clean them, I found they had the pinkish flesh, exactly like yours. My dad wondered if they could be salmon but of course there was no way. They were mighty tastey, as I recall. I love your fishing trips. I would love to see the moment they strike though. Maybe next time you can keep in that part, focusing on the whole Rod. After your video, I watched the one by the Robinettes. Fantastic. I can at least watch what I can’t do anymore. Had my 4 th back surgery and it left me worse off. At nearly 72, I can at least, still enjoy your fabulous videos. Thank you, Shawn.

When I was about 13 years old in Texas my uncle took me to Kickapoo Lake to set out trotline at night. He put me out on an island while he and another uncle work in the boat setting out the lines. Loved it. I captured the essence of this story in my book, "Michael's Eyes." An excerpt from the book. "When that job was finished, it was well after midnight. Horace said, “Before we start setting out the snag line, let’s go over to that island that we passed coming out here and make some coffee. We might find a couple of rocks that we can use without having to go all of the way across the lake.” With that, he started the motor and steered the boat to an island that was a few hundred yards further into the lake. As they arrived at the island, Ross, who was riding in the front of the boat, jumped into the shallow water and pulled the boat onto the bank. Michael could see that there were several large rocks lying at the edge of the water on the island. It was obvious that it would not be necessary to go across the lake for the rocks. There was also a lot of drift wood; so, they could build a fire to make the coffee. Michael jumped from the boat and began gathering wood for the fire, as Horace and Ross found two large rocks to use for the snag line and loaded them into the boat. When Michael had made a large pile of wood, Ross used his carbide lantern to light it and the fire was quickly roaring. Horace dipped the coffee pot into the lake to fill it with water and added a couple of handfuls of coffee grounds. He placed a large rock into the firepit and put the pot on it, such that the fire heated it on all sides. After about twenty minutes the coffee was boiling."

As always, well done, Shawn James. Thank you. Now, then. About those pesky mosquitoes. Place burlap, dried rosemary, and dried lavender (herbs in equal amounts) in coffee cans, set alite, and placed around the area you're working. Burlap burns slowly, and the smoke and herb aroma will keep insects at bay. Cans get hot, so best place them where you want them initially and leave them alone.

Some Old Bay on a piece of fresh trout or char is pretty hard to beat when you're camping. Your trip reminds me of time I spent in Alaska, four of us got dropped in by jump plane with two inflatable boats and fished char for six days. We had our Old Bay, salt, pepper and some flour and lots of bacon fat to cook in, eggs we cracked into nalgene bottles and some instant coffee. We had mule deer backstrap and some elk roasts. Not a lot of vegetables on that trip. We did manage to bring along some crackers, cheese and dried deer sausage for snacks...and granola bars for something sweet. This was before digital cameras so I got most of it stored in my mental hard drive.

It works, although the bugs buzzing inches from your face can still be very annoying. There used tobe a Jungle Juice, 90% DEET or something ridiculously hig like that, that worked great. Today I would add a mermthin treated shirt.

IN THE SPRING we speared suckers (6:28) and chucked them out near our cabin for an orphaned bear to eat. After a few years of fattening, we harvested that same bear. My brother and I hauled it on our little red wagon downhill about a 1/2 mile behind our camp, though it was large and bulky, and kept rolling off. Dad was proud of us boys. Though my sisters were none too happy. That hat is becoming a trademark. Some woodsmen never leave home without it. I noticed you also wear yours inside (54:36). My uncle was never seen without his. He claimed it was the reason why he never went bald. Of course, who could tell otherwise?
