The little notch is on the inside is made to install cushions. if you slide the lip into it and then just rotate the cushion 360 it will put itself on.

well this video gives me some spirit that i can actually do it. doesnt really help with the technique in my experience but i start from the top and use tooth pick to push the lip down to it.
