Easy Illustrated Journal Ideas in My Latest Flip Through + Free Preview Lesson

This visual diary is one I took to Italy, France, and several road trips here in the UK. While it does have plenty of travel chit-chat, it is also an opportunity to talk about the tips, hacks, strategies, and techniques I used to make easy, fun pages. You don't have to be able to draw well or have a lot of fancy supplies to make a meaningful visual diary. I hope this will inspire you to try the same whether your travels are on the road or in your own neighbourhood in your day-to-day life.

I learnt from you not to care about what others say or think when I do my art in public, because until I was 43, I never cared, then in the company of “certain” people I started feeling awkward, due to the expression on their faces. A year ago, I think, you talked about that in one of your videos and I realized how stupid I was acting and I started doing my art again in public. The “certain” people still look at me as if I were a strange person, but I don’t care anymore and I feel much better. Thank you always for your inspiring videos ❤️💚💗🧡💙♥️💜💛🖤

Thank you for sharing this, Alexandra. I wonder if that certain person makes other people feel uncomfortable, too. At my age I find it best to be polite but then do what I need to do. I can mind my own business and so can everyone else. If they really are unpleasant, then just try to stay away from them the next time. One of the most important lessons I know in life is to Say No. Politely, with respect, but firmly: say NO to what does not serve - and intimidating people who judge do NOT serve. 😎Kelly

Loved this - your explanations, advice & encouragement are all awesome! -Thank you!!! I just did a week vacation with my sons - 21 & 15 - 900 mile car trip from Florida to Virginia- spent a day in Savannah Georgia - old cemeteries and buildings, then a short stay along the chickahominy river outside of Williamsburg - involving a paddle board, kayak and beautiful peace and quiet - I took a small watercolor journal with me - had high hopes of creating an artistic interpretation of our time - but got caught up in my inability to reproduce my experiences accurately and basically put the journal away with only one overly worked watercolor and lots of negative self talk in my head about not being artistic enough 😢 I knew the time I was having with them was special and really wanted to create something for me to look back on and remember the moments we had - I was actually haunted in a way about not recording the memories Your video found me this morning and I am so happy it did - I am going to go back and add notes, loose sketches and glue stick photos and scraps I picked up on our trip - feeling very inspired 😊 subscribed and thumbs up

Hi Susan. Thank you for this thoughtful message. That sounds like one great road trip and I envy you traveling with your kids (mine is 31 and checks in but kind of not mine anymore, you know? 🙄). What you describe about being pulled in all directions wanting to make pages is Illustrated Journal Making 101 - so have a look at this, a video that I made specifically about how to keep pages (or fake keeping pages) and enjoy the days as you live them. Because of your course, I am on my third and love this way of journaling. I use found papers, cutouts, in my heart I love to draw, but my brain says wha?? I google a lot most recently how to draw a Bundt cake, as we ate it before I could document my husbands birthday. Most fond memory is my great nephew wanting to see the pages over and over of my visit to his house and all the things we did. He’s not judging the art, he’s connecting with the experience. Sandy, I love that - connecting with the experience, because that is what makes the world go around. Did you manage to find a bundt cake to draw? (How about anything shape kind of round and kind of boxy with wiggles and then write the words "Bundt cake" over it? That should do the trick. 😁). Thank you for touching base. The thing I find about art in a journal, is that you remember the day when you flip through and look back. More so than with photos. I find most people are curious because yoh don't often see people drawing in public. If you are brave enough, have a chat with them.

Hi Linda. You are quite right. I do like photos but there is something far more immediate and personal about a page and/or drawing that you make yourself in situ. And it is fun to talk to people who are curious about what's going on, especially children, who often stop what they are doing and make a page of their own. All the best, Kelly

Hi there, Gilly. I am a journal addict, both visual and written - if it isn't on the page it didn't happen. But it is good to be able to gather what's around you and make imperfect pages of your memories than wait for the time and inspiration to do a perfect job, because that ain't gonna happen. Some fabritac glue would hold that wool on the page or beacon 3 in 1. How wonderful to travel to such marvelous places and then to journal as well…Devine 🥰

Oh Kelly, how fun! Thank you for walking through your travel journal diary. Lovely presentation of the layout with your journal in the center of art supplies, which is very inspiring! It does inspire me to keep at the ones I start. Although I don't travel, I record my day-to-day life. My faves of yours are the castles, ruins, and architectural bits; crypt of St Lawerence, Asti, etc. And floral designing throughout. You made me laugh when you mentioned friends' comments about when you put things on your pages at that moment. You're correct on how they learn to expect it. Haha. My friends and family have accepted when I gather bits and bobs to go, mentioning they'll go in my journals. Haha.

Thank you, Roksanna. I am also trying to see more old churches and abbeys here in the UK on day trips. (I reached a Certain Age where I know have a free bus pass and reduced train fares 🙄 so might as well use them.) But you may have heard me say that when I lived in rural Mississippi and eastern Tennessee, I also kept pages of my furniture, maps of walks with my dog, recipes - that day to day you mention. That is our real journey. I would love to see some pages if you ever want to drop me an email! Kelly

@BookandPaperArts Staycations are very beneficial, aren't they?... and affordable too. They encode our memories, like you mention, when we will look back upon the pages of our illustrated journals. Such treasures! I, too, take advantage of the free bus, discounts etc... we earned it...haha... and yes, let us utilize them. I did hear you mention Tennessee, but not Mississippi. I'll go back to see if you have videos of those days in your illustrated journals. What a treat that will also be. Yes, I will share pages I do. I'll email them over. No, I haven't really shown my early visual diaries although I just found a stack while cleaning out my attic (what a job!) and maybe I should because believe me, they are pretty primitive and still get the times and memories across and that is way more important than being Artists with a capital A, no? Kelly, my gosh, besides being an awesome world traveler, you really put your heart and soul into every travel journal, I've ever seen you create! I always love your castles and archways, not to mention all the yummy food illustrations along with the maps, flowers, salt and pepper shakers, etc.. These are so much fun to go thru with you. I think one of the best parts for me, was that little blob of sheep wool clipped to your book! I also was really impressed with your Kelly doodling, to fill up some of the spaces. Bravo!

Hi Lynn. The part I didn't show was finding the right blob of sheeps wool. I handled way too many that had suspicious stuff stuck on them. 😮 The doodling and mark making is relatively new, picked up from my art journal pages, and that is how they all cross-inspire each other. Kelly, thanks for the inspiring flip through and so many practical tips for keeping a diary. Because of your encouragement I've completed three diaries and just started my fourth . I don't travel as much as you do so most of the entries are close to home. I love to look back and remember special and not so special days.

Wow wow wow. I am so proud of you. Three diaries and counting is not nothing. Now that I have reached A Certain Age I am sorry I did not keep more diaries, more pages of my everyday life but regret doesn't help so I just resolve to do more now. I may try to make a memory book, going back to get stuff down like an imperfect visual biography. If I ever have grandkids it might go over big. But you have the right idea: close to home is how we spend our days and how we spend our days is how we spend our lives. Hi there, Janet. Thanks bunches for this but see, when I teach journal keeping I find that a (perceived) lack of drawing talent holds a lot of people back a lot. I like my drawings but under no illusions about perspective, realistic portrayal, values, and so on, so I like to encourage others who are in the same boat to Just Draw Anyway. And draw with water solubles - water solubles are our friends.🎨😊I hope you have a creative week. About to get mine started! And thanks again for the vote of confidence. Kelly

Thank you for touching base, Katie. When I travel with my old friend my travel is a forced march of four or more museums a day while I try to sneak off to the old churches and ruins. It is worthwhile, of course, but on my own I prefer to see less but see more of it. Still, we are used to each other and it is nice to have the company, especially when they are used to my pulling out a sketchbook at table.😁Kelly

@@BookandPaperArts Yep, I totally get it. Museums are lovely, a few at a time, but I love architecture and old buildings - especially in Europe. My sister is much like you in that she plans her trips around the churches and ruins in the area where she’ll be staying. I don’t get to travel much anymore (physical limitations), but her husband is an excellent photographer so I draw and paint from his photos.

@@katiehanrahan5293Hi Katie. You know, I tell people all the time when I teach journal keeping that no, working from photos and post cards is not "cheating". It is a great way to add to memories after the fact and if you are lucky enough to "assemble" a memory using photos your BIL took himself, that's good, too. And then there is sketching the buildings in our own back yard. If you practice on a photo of a cathedral then you are good to go with you local library or what-you-will! This is a wonderful idea to keep memories. I like that you put in later trips, too, because you had the space left over. Makes sense and adds interest. - I just love your sketch of the crocodile mummy! 🐊

Hello and welcome, Kathy. Yes, re glued stuff in journals. My first three or four journals were only glued bibs and bobs and handwritten notes and captions. Then I (boldly, for me) added doodling with my cheap watercolour set from the kids section of the big box store (all I could afford!). Slowly I added stick figure cartoons of my day because no one saw them except me, and then I started to like those stick figure cartoons and jumped in and never looked back. And you?

@BookandPaperArts hi Kelly, thank you for taking the time to reply. I usually make "junk journal" style journals. I'm about to start an altered book. I tend to use my journals for a bit of everything. Memory keeping, photos, writing about my day, collage, etc. I have a reasonable supply of pens, pencils, paints, etc. Lots of washi tape, stickers and adhesives. I use fabric scraps in my journals too. I have a Canon selphy (a mother's day gift a few years back) that I can use to print photos. I don't do much drawing in my journals and would like to incorporate more of my own drawing. I have a separate art journal for specific projects. Mostly mixed media and collage.

@@kathyryder828I love those little photo printers but mine packed in and I haven't replaced it, especially as I try to streamline art supplies when I am on the go and it was just one thing too much. To start adding those drawings, you can always start with doodles and mark making and let it grow from there. Let me know how it goes! Kelly

It looks like you used a Stabilo "all" water activated pencil for some of your drawings? Or something similar?

Hi Kathy. I use water soluble graphite pencils. Mine are by Caran d'Ache but lots of people make them. I also use other water solubles such as Derwent Inktense sticks. Such an easy way to add messy colour and texture. Kelly
