The earliest predecessor to the inversion plot was Ed Marlo's "Mental Reverse" published in The Cardician in 1953. Routines of this type were first published under the title "Inversion" in Encore II in 1981 by James Lewis, Piet Forton, and Michael Ammar. Since then, many magicians have published variations on the plot. So many, in fact, that a not-quite-as-good version of this trick is a rather common follow up to "hey I know this one magic trick can I show it to you?" Luckily, the version I teach here will fool people who know the not-quite-as-good version as the magical phenomenon taking place is far more impressive in this version.

What I really appreciate, is by watching one of your 10 levels of Sleight of Hand, I knew how this trick worked. That's a nod that you teach principles well. I also appreciate the in-depth approach to teaching the holding positions. It can be easy to want to get to the "magic", but I realize the magic is having amazing fluidity with props/cards. Thanks for everything you share and do!

Love the attention to detail you put into the basic grips. There are great magic tutorials here on KZfaq, that teach fantastic tricks incredibly well. This is the first time I've seen someone take the time to teach the basics of just how to hold the deck in a way that sets you up for success.

If you have a deck with a double-sided face-down prop card like the Ghost deck, this is easier to pull off and tuff cookies will not be able to go through the deck and see the second card in your trick is face down. Though you have to end the trick with showing the cards face down and their card face up (which takes away the tension build-up effect but still gets great reaction). Great video man!

Awesome videos and card work. I love your careful explanations. But even after you show how some of your tricks are done, your artful handling of the cards still make it all look so flawless. Years ago, a magician taught me a variation of this same trick ... but in his variation only one card is flipped to prepare the deck and both he and the spectator choose a random card. This way two cards end up inverted at the reveal ... equally amazing to the spectator except that the 2nd inverted card is really the prepared card. You can spread all the cards and let the spectator inspect the deck at the end of the trick because all the evidence of preparing the deck is gone.

Firstly, love this, been loving your content and as a complete beginner I am aiming to master this trick and move forward. I have a question though, not so much about this particular trick but generally; if you're right handed, as I am, why do you have the dealing from the left hand? Is there a specific reason for that? I'm seeming to find it far easier in my right hand but I'm sure there's a reason.

I explained the super basic method, but didn’t teach any of the subtleties that make it learnable. There’s a big difference between “here’s the secret method” and “here’s how to learn the trick so you can do it.” But that does depend on your goals - if you just want to know how it’s done, which is fine, then they’re more or less equivalent.
