Here's my 2 cents: Back in the 80s, I stopped what I was doing and called the radio station, because I swore I was hearing Sam Cook sing, "Let's talk it over in Bed," a lyric that never would have made it onto the radio back when Sam was actually alive. Grayson Hugh became a star because he sounded like Sam Cook. I know you don't want to be known as an imitation Karen Carpenter, but you have an amazing gift. You should focus on songs that Karen would have sung if she'd lived, and sing them exactly as she might have. You did that with "Here I am", and it was great. I'd love to hear a Carpenters version of Dixie Chicks "You were Mine", for one example. Check out the stuff Burt Bacharach wrote from 1982 on; some of them he probably wrote with Karen in mind.
