I like to terminate data cables like that in a back box with face plate, then use a proper patch lead to go from there to the device. It’s neater and more reliable than a crimped on end. It’s also an easier termination using a simple telco krone tool 👍

It also means that you're never fiddling with the end of your long run, just a short (easily replaceable) patch lead. If for example the clip breaks off the end of the lead, they just replace the patch rather than calling you out again to recrimp the end and find some slack somewhere!

Any length of Cat5 cat6 beyond 10 meters should be solid core and should be terminated in to a proper cat 5 or 6 socket or patch panel. Solid core doesn’t really like crimp plugs on them long term. Seen them fail after a while, so it works and then fails. That’s the spec for the cable, sure you can go outside the spec as there’s always things that works, but how many times have you seen sparkies berate diy’ers for doing things outside the spec. True cat5 isn’t going to catch light (unless it accidentally gets shorted on to mains) but still same principle applies. It should be a set distance from sources of emf interference so running next to power cables is outside the spec too. What if the person decides they want to work from that space and needs a good data rate or decides to stream 4k and the cable can’t handle it. It’ll probably work but I would agree with the op on this.

@@davideyres955 I've seen CCTV installs done into jacks straight into the recorder, and it looks a bloody mess. Much better to panels like you say. There are different types of crimp plug, some with straight blades are for punching into stranded cable, and will kick off to the side if punched into solid core. Others with blades that go "either side" are meant for solid core and act more like an IDC terminal.

Hi Chris, nice to shake your hand at the Blenheim run the other day. I’ve been on exactly the same job as your video today and picked up some more good tips, thanks. One thing I was careful of in the new wood cabin, was allowing for vertical expansion. I purposely ensured all fixing for accessories were made in the same slat, not traversing. The movement in the wood due to recent wet weather was incredible and would likely have split the slats or back boxes if their fixings had traversed. Any thoughts?

A very neat job inside the shed, Chris, everything nicely concealed. I'd have put a conduit end box on the end of that Copex though, (or even glanded it into another Wiska) cos it would look a lot neater and be more weatherproof. Enjoying you videos though!

I was just watching you gland the storm gland into the FCU enclosure. I was thinking why didn’t you strip it before you glanded it. I’ve done it myself in the past and learnt my lesson. 😂. Another good video Chris 👍

8:50 Chris on your ergostrip there should be a little blade on the side that you can use to run up the cable and that way you can just peel off the sheathing a lot easier👍🏼wicked video as always mate

Hi chris my uncle used to work for perlli cables for a least 35years which is based in aberdare in South Wales and are still there and still making cables like you said under different make that took them over prysmain cables

I've used the piranha nut for plastic boxes but find they chew them up too much I started to put them upside down. I had a concern they could cut into the insulation of the installed cable with the teeth. but so far no problems. Do any companies make toothless piranha nuts, would be a good idea, saves a lot of time trying to fit a nut and bolt to a banjo. Whats your thoughts.

Considering the nice wood effect inside I would have taken the feed back outside, underground to avoid internal cables for the socket on the other side of the door. Lots of effort but for a tidy job

Just a little observation. When I'm going through walls with cables, I always put a piece of conduit through the wall. It makes it easier to feed the cable through and hopefully guards against the cable getting crushed if the wall moves over time.

Yes . The maximum permissable load is determined by the fuse at the start of the SWA run (13 Amp) . So radials are fine , 1.5mm or 2.5mm twin and cpc can be used .

@@dennisphoenix1 I thought 1.5mm was ok too but got a surprise when I dug a little deeper on the trip curves for BS1362 13A fuses. A 13A fuse like that used in a FCU will happily take 20A steady, all day long, whereas 1.5mm is getting a bit hot and bothered at 17A. I changed to 2.5 for my ongoing radial as a result. Always like headroom, less stress, longer life.

@@MikeSmith-tx2lp if you look at fusing that way a 3036 would carry 60 amp . Feeding a 2.5mm ring main it overloads both ring cables assuming it's a perfect ring . The likelihood of a constant 20amp load I would suggest in this instance is slim .

@@dennisphoenix1 completely agree in this instance. Are cables underrated, I.e. will tolerate much more current than spec. before degradation? Using just the trip curves and cable specs. there does seem to be a contradiction. Thanks for your insight, I’m absorbing and challenging my knowledge all the time.

The testing of rings is one of the reasons they should be dropped from the regs. To test, you have to break them. Another prime example here. The number of times I hear that the connection in the breaker was not correctly done with it either loose or getting insulation...

It’s external rather than armoured, external is generally marginally more expensive but is UV & rot resistant. Armoured has mechanical protection built in and is indeed far more spendy 👍

funny you mention that... had an indoor cat5e on suspended run outside for 10+ years with no visible degradation... was good enough for the purpose it served, that's in +-30c environment 😅👻 people just couldn't afford any fancy cables back then

Just buy 50mm underground cable ducting. It's relatively cheap.

How can an "un-switched" spur be double-poled? Popping the fuse only disconnects the live phase.

I would have fitted a DP isolator incase of issues in the future , would make it easier to disconnect in the event of it tripping the internal RCD etc

@@Cjrelectrical Switched fuse spur rather than un switched fused spur . Switch fuses are double pole . Or DP switch inside or Switch fused spur inside .

You can't fuse a neutral anyway. It would have to be a 2 pole switched spur, fusing the line only. I suppose the only benefit would be isolating the outhouse supply if there was water ingress. Chris went belt n braces with the external boxes so can't see water ingress there, but that's not to say u couldn't get water in the outhouse through the roof or whatever. It's a fancy shed at the end of the day. Good job non the less.

Why do instructions with waterproof boxes say not to drill a drain hole at the bottom if the cable is bottom entry? Surely any extra drainage is better.

I recently swapped my single outdoor for a double socket, the original single was fitted by a large enough company contracting to Taylor Wimpy for over 5000 homes in this area. When I opened the box to disconnect, it was full with water inside, because no one had protected the screws with silicon, and they had not drilled the drain holes, I guess i got away with it as the connection block was at the top of the box and above the tide.. Dont be shocked by the level of poor workmanship that come from actual sparks, even the big names have cowboys who are lazy and dont care.

Why not bring the SWA straight though the floor on the inside of the summer house straight into the socket. Rain water will eventually collect behind that outside wiska box and rot the wood . Another good tip is slide some flexi over the SWA where it comes out the ground .The outer insulation these days is so crap any sharp object will pierce it.
