Thank You for such a detailed video, and close-ups. I really enjoyed listening to you saying how to place your needle in this zigzag. Thank you very much for this tutorial! You definitely helped make this less intimidating for a noob like me. One note though, I tried Steam A Seam 2 (standard version, just like you have in this video) with fleece and it started gumming up my needle, causing skipped stitches. I tried several methods to get around this, thinking it was a tension or other type of issue. After doing some research, one website recommended going with the Lite version for machine sewing. Hope this helps others. Thanks again!

Diffuse: yes. SAS2 is a non-sewing fusible. I wanted to see what would happen if I tried to sew on it. It wouldn't make the stitch over the fabric, it lifted my applique off the fabric entirely!😂

Gorgeous. Thanks very much for sharing. I'm new to appliqué and been practising but having problems with my zig zag stitch going off applique or not catching. How do you follow curve with a standard zigzag foot? Do you follow needle or part of foot like you do when straight sewing? Thanks

Christina Mackay I watch the needle. It’s helpful to have a foot that is either clear or clear within the middle part.

@Lena Eats ASMR I use an open toe foot so I can see what I'm doing. Also ck YT tunes. There are ways to turn or work on the points. They will show you how. Once you know the tricks, it's easy. Good luck.

My first time watching you. You do such a wonderful job. So patient and step by step. I am 69 with a hearing aids, so any music in the background makes it difficult for me to interpret what you are saying. We need to hear you, of we want to have music we can play our own. I loved being able to see you stitch up close and slowly, thank you.

Everyone I see doing applique uses fusible webs or sheets. Did you know you can use basting glue or just plain Elmer's glue? These options are cheaper and easier to use with less instructions. Why do people use the fusibles as opposed to plain old glue? I saw a lady just use the glue around the raw edge of the applique piece to hold it into the background fabric and she had amazing results I didn't notice any shifting. Is there a reason most applique quilters are using this special product? I don't understand it. I haven't tried applique yet I'm learning as much as a can before I try but these methods all seem so lengthy and unnecessary to me. Any input would be appreciated thank you

Emily, I am new at applique, but I saw a video in which the woman said that fusing the whole applique down, as opposed to just the edges with glue, keeps it from shifting and fraying over the years and thru many washings. That made sense to me, so that may be the reason.

Emily, it's because they're told they need X product. You notice that the video takes 3.30 out of the 10 minute tutorial explaining in detail how to use a brand-name product and how great it is.

I think it is just progress. It is another way to do things. Just like using a sewing machine instead of sewing by hand, or using an embroidery machine instead of embroidering by hand. Manufacturers are always coming out with new things to make sewing a bit easier, a bit more professional, or just so we will buy more. We can still do things in a more simple manner if we want to, but if we want to try the new gadgets and products, we can. I think progress marches on and we cannot stop it. It is a world that revolves around business and money. But many times the old ways, the "by-hand" ways are cherished and valued more. I myself have several machines that do lots of things that I would not be doing if I had to do it by hand. And it is so fun!! It is everyone's choice how you want to do it. And yes, you can save money by doing it the simpler ways. Why not try it both ways, Emily, and see if there is a difference, or if you prefer one way over the other? Than you can continue on with your choice. Happy sewing!!

Emily Shetterly the reason the fusible is used is partly because the paper backing makes tracing the pattern much easier. Trying to trace the pattern directly onto the fabric is much harder and typically requires a light box or taping the pattern and fabric to a window so with the light shining through the pattern is visible. Also, and in my opinion the most important reason , the paper backed webbing hugely helps with the edges fraying. Cutting out the pieces, applying glue if done that way, positioning and sewing down is a lot of handling. And all the handling of the fabric causes the edges to fray. If that is the look you're going for than great but if not the webbing is really the easiest way to keep the edges from unraveling. Hope my explanation clears up some confusion. I'm sure there's more reasons if anyone else cares to comment

Emily Shetterly I’m new to this, but when I used glue I found my needles were not too happy. They became gummed up sort of. When I used the fusible product made for this, I had no trouble whatsoever.

Hi Amy! So glad I found your KZfaq channel! I had purchased your Baby Quilt Craftsy workshop years ago, and still find that I come back to it to refresh myself even after all this time. :) I have a question that I hope you see. I'm doing an applique quilt for the first time, and just wanted to get your opinion about using spray basting for the applique as opposed to fusible. Thoughts?

I am totally new to appliques. I just purchased my first mat and cutter wheel today and 4 colors of solid broadcloth to practice with. I have the double stick web as well. Can you tell me where to get this pattern? Cant wait to start. What is the club you are talking about?

Amy (or fellow commenters), how does the raw edge technique go down with judges at quilt shows. Do they have to see edges turned under all the time? Just wondering, because I want to enter a quilt in a show and I need to do a lot of appliqueing on it; and this seems a lot faster and easier than turning all the edges under -- but I'd also like to win a ribbon. Please reply. Great video btw.

I am in a block exchange and a gal sewed around her first layer and then when she put the next layer on top the stitching on the first layer was raised a little and showed. I fuse all the pieces down and then sew around everything. that way I don't have raised edges underneath from the sewing

+Babby Blair Thanks for sharing about your process! There are definitely many different ways to do applique, and raw edge applique...I like different ones for different reasons but this is the one that I tend to use the most. To each his own! :)

+Amy Gibson that is so true. there are so many different ways of doing things. I would show you the picture of that block I was talking about but I don't want the gal to feel bad. What do you do when your top fabric is a little see through. Where the underneath fabrics show through the top layer. would you put a piece of interfacing on it. or would that make it too bulky? Also, I still enjoy your tutorials and your pics of your family. I bet they keep you on the run.

Lora Johnson heat bond is a must! I use a light weight heat bond.
