I just did this! My extra tips: -When trying to pull it over the tie rod end and even onto the steering rack, heat with a hair dryer. It makes the rubber WAY more pliable and easier to stretch/pull. -Dont use a screwdriver to encourage the boot past the tie rod.. use the end of a spoon or something blunter. Good luck 🤠

I just used this method on an 05 v6 highlander. I used a heat gun on it beforehand and I'm surprised how easy it went on. I used the Beck arnley boot and leather gloves and paper towels. Thank you so much.

I honestly shook my head when I watched this video but had no choice but to try it it worked !!! Use a big flat blade screw drive to stretch and pull the boot over the tie rod body and be careful you will be fine thanks for posting this!🙏

Thank you for the great video clip. Instead using the screwdriver to push the boot in,, need to remove the tie rod end apart and put the boot in without forcing it then connect the clamp & install back the tie rod end. Good luck everyone

Awesome stuff, gonna tackle this project this weekend on my Lexus RX350. Power steering fluid was leaking out so I'll try getting some of the old stuff out and putting in Lucas power steering stop leak as I've heard good reviews. One thing different I would do is to clean the old grease and dirt off the joints before regreasing it. It won't be perfect but will be much better than just putting new grease over the old grease. Rack and pinion replacement on my car would be $300+ for parts and $1000+ for labor. This fix should be sufficient enough for hopefully another 100k miles.

you don' t need to replace tie rod ends just becuause greese is bad JUST GET ( GREEsE NEEDLE ) and puncture thru boot and fill it up with greese to extend life of tie rod end . you saved me head ache of changing mine BIG THANX

Would it possibly help to turn the boot inside out and then try to start with the small end? After you get it over the tie rod end you could just turn it inside out again.

At first I didn’t believe you would get the boot over the tie rod end:) The only thing I’m wondering is what you did with that spring clamp that was on the end of the boot? Did you leave it inside the new boot? And as for the wheel bearing grease I would not have lubed the rack beyond the inner rod, the ball was ok to do but the rack itself was a no no, the wheel bearing grease could wreck the inner seals, you should of just squirted on some power steering fluid that your vehicle uses. Other then that I was impressed you got the boot over the tie rod end:)

I just called the Toyota Dealer to ask for the price of installing one of this tie rod boot on my 2007 Sienna and they quoted "The part is $21.99 and the labor to install ONE boot is $400.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Seriously?. Wow, I definitely going to try to install this myself and see where it takes me. Hopefully, it works as smoothly as yours.

Nice clever way to not have to do an alignment. If it was me I'd throw those zip ties away and use some good worm drive clamps though. I'd also give the outer tie rod a really really good clean job before dragging the new boot over it.

I know you didn't want to an alignment... but if you counted and marked the tie rod end teeth, it would have made install allot easier.

Is it better to use a clamp vs zip tie? I think that the zip tie will deteriorate from the elements. They do become brittle and break. What do you think?

loosen the outer tie rod lockin nut . spin off the tie rod, slide on the boot , put the tie rod back on, tighten the tie rod lockin nut

Someone else mentioned that you could just loosen the jam nut, and unscrew the tie rod from the nut, counting the number of turns, then it would be easier to slip on the new boot. That way you wouldn't have to pop out the tie rod end.

Where can I buy

You actually need a new inner and outer tie rod; the inner should be stiff and this one easily moves, and the bushing of the outer one is all squashed and leaking grease without a fitting to add more grease; they are both bad. I like the idea of using a greased bag, you think outside of the box! thank you.

The only reason i watched this was to see if greese was added to the inside of the boot to lube that inner...that was damn sure the hard way to put the new boot on just to see if it would fit...A simple match up next to it would have done the job...You did however save the cost of re allignment....zip ties are worthless. Use a twist wire or flat metal clamp...

For you guys that are wondering how got the part on without ripping it using the screwdriver... I am too. Tore mine while trying to use the screwdriver to manipulate it. Back to the drawing board.

If you have to replace the tie rod, whats the seance of going trough all that trouble with the plastic bag. Using the plastic bag idea was to avoid the alignment. But if by using the plastic bag you will mess up the tie rod you have to go trough alignment anyway.......

Man it is much easier with 2 7/8 wrench and remove the ball joint then all you have is a straight shaft to slide the boot on and you don't take a chance of ripping the boot
