Hopefully, this will help someone, maybe. Hope so. Super cool fix, there is definitely a lot that can be done with this in special effects. For example, not wanting to re-mask for every single muzzle flash!

You did, pal. You helped me a lot. I've done it many times before in older versions of Premiere and After Effects (in the '90s) and now that I am coming back to it, there are lots of more tools and incredible features, but it seems all the basic stuff got buried with the new "neat new tricks". Thank you! I've been trying to move the image without moving the opacity mask and it was driving me nuts. I use Distort Transform all the time but I hadn't thought of applying it to this use until I saw your video. Thanks again

I love you so much for this, I was trying to have extended vowels pop out from behind subtitles without being seen behind the original spelling, I couldn't find any solutions except this and it was such an easy fix! Example: Original Subtitle: "You gotta try" Audio: "You gotta tryyyyyy" Expected outcome: "You gotta try(yyyyy)" where the (yyyyy) slides out from behind the original "try", matching the audio. And I have to mask the space after the word "try" so that the extra (yyyyy)s will only be seen when sliding out. I don't know if there is a better way, feel free to tell me if there is!

Hello, I am trying the opposite and am not able to succeed: I have a clip in a sequence with position keyframes adjustments, and whenever I add an opacity mask, it follows the keyframes values and the mask moves, while I need the mask to remain in a fixed position even if the video content inside it is following keyframes changes in position and/or scale etc. I tried to use the Distort -> Transform as you suggested but it did not work, the frame created in this separate effect kept following the keyframes in the upper initial Motion section. Any help please? Thank you.

You put your values into the distort transform as well, right? The mask should stay put if the mask is placed on the motion of the clip itself. Distort just moves the data in the clip without moving the actual bounds of it. It seems you were having the same issue as I was? you have to use the distort effect layer to move the layer itself (of text of picture or whatever it is you want to move), the mask will move if you use the opacity effect layer that was there from the beginning
