@Isaac Meza : We are better prepared for when something happens to our cars, at unexpected moments. I check and change the rad hoses and serpentine belt, as it shows signs of aging, or signs of degrading, spongy hoses, veru stiff hoses, cracked belt, etc. I should carry a spare belt, just incase, and maybe extra rad hoses too.

Just in case anybody is thinking these types of repairs are permanent they are not. It is possible for it to last the life of the tire but most of the time you get a couple hundred miles from the patch before the plug starts to separate. It’s always best to buy a new tire as soon as possible after patching. You can’t see inside the tire if there are any broken wires you’ll lose air all around the tire

This ISN'T a permanent repair. I've been in the trade for 18 years, there's a reason why we remove tyres and plug them from the inside. This patch will be fine to get you to a place to have it repaired properly.

As a professional tire technician in both passenger & commercial tires. This only works as a last ditch/ very temporary fix. Having to try to fixe a tire with a plug patch that’s been in for 2 months is one of the most pain in the ass things. Take it from a professional, save us & yourself the headache. Throw your spare on & see a technician

@zazuch Dont get me wrong, I agree it isnt a perfect fix. But we clearly have different views on the probabilities and consequences that constitute this risk. Regarding the effort; in the possibly dozens of times I've had a puncture like this I've only once needed to redo the repair, which took less time than taking it to the shop. The plugs arent perfect but they do work and last really well if done right. I can also refill air in minutes wherever I am as I have a pump and spare plugs, so that is no hinderance. As for cost, it is not a few bucks, both my local shops charge the equivalent of $150 USD for proper patch repair. Just two repairs would buy me said jacket, one repair would buy me 7x 8hr rider safety courses (yes they are $20). A better bike, while definitely more costly, makes a huge difference to safety e.g. traction control, ABS, etc. Which unlike cars are not standard on all bikes, but are a worthwhile to have. You keep suggesting that the plug failing could cause potentially bad crash. How do you propose that would happen? The tyre isnt going to suddenly blow out and disintegrate. That isnt what happens with a bike tyre puncture like this. It has a small puncture which would likely still be partially sealed by the plug. It is going to deflate slowly, and long before I lose any handling over the bike or compromise my safety, I am going to notice and do something about it. Just like when I got the original puncture in the first place. Hence, why in my opinion, it is not as great a risk as you seem to think it is.
zazuch
zazuch 20 сағат бұрын
@JF M While you may disagree it isnt needed the facts dont lie its a subpar fix. To me avoiding having to repair a "repair" multiple times or having to fill up a tire because it is leaking is well worth the few bucks to get it properly fixed. Because it isnt worth getting stranded because you are unable to find a air pump, or tire plugs. Sorry but its just dumb to cheap out in such a manner given the risks. If you cant afford a tire patch you really cant afford the issues that may come from a crash due to improper care of your tires. If you can afford a airbag vest you can afford a tire patch.....you talk about not having infinite money but then say go buy a air bag vest, and safety course lol......Also "having a quality bike" to me would be a fully functional bike with out flaws such as improperly repaired tires........The logic you follow amazes me tbh. Dont want to spend a few bucks to fix your tires properly but then suggest a airbag vest.......
JF M
JF M 21 сағат бұрын
@zazuch I appreciate your point but I don't agree with it. There are many choices about my riding a motorcycle that may get me killed, and I accept and own those risks. This is one of the less probable risks in my opinion. A leaky plug in a nail puncture for example is highly unlikely to cause a crash. The reality is that we dont all have unlimited money to spend, and so I have to make cost-benefit decisions about where to spend my money. In my opinion I am better off buying an airbag vest, doing regular rider safety courses to improve my skills, having a quality bike, etc.
zazuch
zazuch 21 сағат бұрын
@JF M its amazing people are so willing to cheap out on something that could even more so in your case(on a motorcycle) cost your life if a tire repair were to fail at the wrong time. Just because you haven't experienced an issue YET doesn't mean you wont and it only takes one to make you regret it forever.
JF M
JF M Күн бұрын
I've had numerous punctures on my motorcycle and initially I always followed the advice of using plugs only as a temporary fix. But getting proper patches was getting too expensive, so now I mostly just use the plugs and leave it. I've done thousands of kilometers on some of the plugs, with no major issues. Once or twice it has leaked very slowly and needed an air top-up and to be re-plugged. I've never heard of it causing a sudden catastrophic tyre failure as might cause an accident. My experience has been tyres going slowly flat is a very obvious feeling, you will notice it feeling strange and bouncy before you your control of the bike goes. So personally I am happy to continue this approach of only getting professional repairs for the worst punctures. Nevertheless, I still suggest other people to get it done properly if they can afford it as I dont want to be the one that leads them to a decision they regret. I'll let them do that for themselves 😅

Yes however hot patches like these tend to wear out after you drive for a while. Generally plugs are used for getting you to a shop to have it properly repaired or for permanently repairing tractortires or ATV tires as they are normally not going nearly as fast as car tires, meaning the tire won't be flexing as much, making it less likely to leak. I want to say it's about a 15 percent chance these hot patches will last over 1000 kilometers and still hold air tight.
Rob Sorgdrager
Rob Sorgdrager Ай бұрын
@Mark Zeppelin you understand the physical loads that a regular car tire under perfect conditions and maintenance is put under right....how many cars on the road would you guess are properly maintained? Being a mechanic I would guess about 15% of all cars on the roads today are in need of zero repairs to major systems and that's because they are less than 8 months old. I don't have a problem with you gambling with your safety but as soon as your mistake involves me or my family then we have issues. I have also been requested to help inspect cars involved in accidents and my job is to find signs of neglected vehicles. I wake up in the morning with a smile on my face when I can prove a person failed to take responsibility and I get to pin a life destroying judgement onto them. DONT BE A PILE OF SHIT, TAKE CARE OF YOUR CAR BECAUSE IT CAN KILL PEOPLE....STOP BEING STUPID!!!!!!

I like how you took the time to actually take the tire off, have a nice clean workspace, gloves and all.. compared to me rolling around at the gas station concrete trying to force the tool through pulling every muscle in my body while screaming

Man if you're taking the tire off you're working at it way too hard! Just get you a good slime plug the slime brand plug and plug it, doesn't take all that soap doesn't take all the other thing doesn't take it getting it off get in there turn your steering wheel one way or the other where it's out plug that baby and be done with it and off you go.

Please do not use stuff like this, while it may be a nicer repair lot this stuff typically doesn’t work and makes tire center workers struggle to repair, sometimes even making them unable to be repaired. Source: I work at a tire center

@Dan Hyde In fairness not having the tire mounted does make it easier to show a step by step of how its done. Also just makes patch work loke this easier in general tbh.

This is no different than plugging a tire the way we have done it for years. Yes it will out last the tire!

@Niko Bella-Khouf if you live close enough to a tire shop that you can get there before the tire is flat I would just take it there. The repair (if it is a fixable puncture) is free or at worst about the same as the cost of a plug kit. Plugs are best used in situations in which you can't get to the shop without running on a flow tire and/or don't have a spare.

@Uru Sledge thank you. I used to think the plug was good enough, now I need to figure out the patch from the inside part

Plugs are good at slow speeds. Not allowed on performance tires in countries where you DON’T have to drive boring!

Not really. I spent several years working in tire shops and had several a year come in that had been plugged (sometimes recently) and had a slow leak from the plug. Best way to do it is to use a round rubber plug-patch or round plug and patch placed from the inside of the tire. Just a plug usually starts to let air through, and just a patch let's water into the belts, rusting them and weakening them, making the tire more likely to blow out later in its life.

Not true there is a difference, you add like 4 extra steps doing it this way so that it feels more technical 🤣
