A slow cooker isn’t just for savoury food - you can use it for dessert too! This Slow cooker jam sponge is a lovely dense sponge topped with plenty of warm, oozy raspberry jam.
Finished off with a good drizzle of cream or custard and you’ve got a pud that’ll take you right back to your childhood!
This recipe is featured in our book "Its All About Dinner'. For the full recipe including hints and tips check out our website or the book. My New book is out now! geni.us/ItsAllAboutDinner

What a great idea . Instead of steaming the pud on stove top. I have a large ceramic slow cooker and some steamed pudding basins from Mason & Cash. I love the steamed puds with warm custard sauce. English comfort food from my childhood . Yum !

I've just got to try this. Never thought of using my slow cooker in this way. Thanks Nicky. Just noticed that this recipe is in your book which I do have! So don't need to print the recipe out as I have it! What is it they say; "Eyes have they and see not!"

Oh my. I have devoured this and other steam puddings over the years but never - even attempted - to make one but this seems to be an elegant and straightforward method. Being optomistic that I could/would not eat the whole pudding, what would be your instinct regarding scaling. For instance sveral smaller ones or he whole one and divided ( I think that one would be the least likely to make it into the fridge ). I am also assuming I could substitte other 'fillings' e.g. Treacle/Golden Syrup.

Yum. It doesn't get much better than this on an autumn/winter day! Could you add coconut to the sponge mix...I love the raspberry and coconut combo in a dessert?!

My mother did just that - couple of ounces of coconut added to the sponge and a sprinkle of coconut on top after steaming

I'll be honest, I thought you'd found a way that didn't need the pudding basin, baking paper and string..? I'll stick to doing the same thing, but in a pan! 🤣 Oh, and mine are suet and treacle, when I can be bovvered... 😋 x

The traditional way is to prepare as shown then instead of a slow cooker put the bowl in a saucepan, add the boiling water then the lid and let it bubble away for a couple of hours. It will clatter a bit but the result should be the same.

You can put the sponge in a steamer on your hob, if you haven’t got a steamer put an upturned saucer in a saucepan and stand the pudding basin on the saucer, fill two thirds of water, and cook on the hob on low with a lid on for 2.5hrs check the saucepans water doesn’t run dry, if so add more hot water from a kettle.
