Easy Synth Experiment for Beginners Atari Punk Console with LFO
In this video we take the old Atari Punk Console(sdiy.info/wiki/Atari_Punk_Con...) and add in a low frequency oscillator (LFO) to give it a little more adjustability.

Man I love these kind of circuits they are so much fun to play with. I’ve made them super easy all the way to super complex and you always learn something from adding and removing stuff from the basic circuit. Great video Paul, I’m going to have to build a punk circuit today and have some fun.

I always like it when people do things like this with analog circuits and breadboard. I've been in the digital world (FPGAs + microprocessors) for awhile also messing with audio. But there's really something special about doing it with analog components you can hold and see!

I had a flashback. A few decades ago, driving my mom's crazy with the exact same setup, but the output connected to the AUX input of my bedroom's stereo. Fun times, crazy sounds.

Nostalgic Paul! Reminds me of the hours I would spend at Radio Shack (RIP) as a kid playing with the synthesizer they had on display. God I miss Radio Shack. 1000 to go almost there!!!! :)

Great video! I'm a big fan of your channel. I've played with various versions of the Punk Console in the past, and experimented with sending an audio (with a microphone & amp) into, I believe, pin 5 you can do really WEIRD things! (I could be wrong about the pin... it's been a long time!)

I like these types of switching circuits and it's a 555. we can make different types like a Buck, Boost, Dc to Ac, strobe LED, and also a touch switch. Thanks for sharing Sir keep them comg more. 🤗

I just did something similar with my APC circuit. I put some electrolytic caps on the output of pin 3 on the astable 555 to pin 5 on each 555 in the APC. It really added a nice "crunch"!

Again, I think this could be equally as well done with my favourite quad Schmitt trigger, where one gate oscillator is used to add cadence to a second or third gate oscillator. Like the 555, it is possible to take the signal from either the square wave output or the capacitor charge discharge voltage. May I also suggest that you do a few experiments with a double balanced mixer IC, to make ring modulators. There are such devices that work down to very low audio frequency, even though they are designed for RF/IF applications, as they are DC coupled, eg SA602AN. The ring modulator is the way that the Doctor Who Dalek voices were made.

What is the value of the electrolytic cap, that you using for the LFO? Also, what pins is the 10k trimmer connected to, is it 6 and 7? Please let me know. Cheers!

captured A screen picture, and have it saved into my schematics file. loved that little circuit : ) and how the resistance & capacitance of the scope leads change the frequency ever so slightly. would have noticed that even if you haven't forewarned us about it THANKS TO YOUR FREE KNOWLEDGE i now know stuff like that!! now to the "REAL BUSINESS AT HAND" 99.1K on your next video iv noticed but haven't looked at yet. (i thinks me's need's to buy that bottle of champagne) coz it's looking like any day now ; ) 100K!!! BOOM BABY, BOOM. also loved how the extra 555 turn it into a LFO. awesome extra tip.. nice one for that Paul because, as you know there's more than just making a speaker sound funny to done with these exact same circuits .. ; ) anyway C64 games to be watched!!

Tried out this little synth, it worked! But the LFO just added a bunch of static - no modulation, at all. I’ve tried different values of caps [all electrolytic], 0.1, 10, 22, 220, and 330 micro-Farad - nothing worked. Please let me know, what value you used for the cap. Also, I build this LFO very close to the synth circuit [ran out of space on the proto-board], could that be causing the static - the proximity?

Noob question: What makes an LFO, an LFO? [from left to right] You have the 555 #1 connected to the 555 #2 [via pin 3, to pin 2]. Then you have 555 #3 connected to 555 #2 [via pin3, to pin5]. They’re all 555s but one is connected to pin 2 and the other, is connected to pin 5. So, is that what determines whether it’s an LFO or not? Please clarify. I want to learn. Thank you kindly

Sorry sir, permission to ask, if you want the LED to turn on for 1 second and turn off for 5 seconds and you can adjust it to turn on for 5 seconds and turn off for 1 second. 1 second is also 1 second. Only the frequency can be set... please advise. Thank you

@@learnelectronics I think this is a fair suggestion - especially considering those interested in tech who have sensitive ears or are autistic but still want to hear your words. we came here to hear what you have to say and learn, but we all know the APC can be a bit grating on the ears haha. It’s all about the mix between the synth and your voice. Thanks for the vid!
