Easy-to-Build Shooting Board [Woodworkers Institute]

Жыл бұрынA simple shooting board is an accessory for a hand plane used for squaring the ends of workpieces accurately and with glass-smooth results. Randy Maxey built this shooting board "on the fly," designing it as he was building it. He ended up with a great shooting board that will last for years. In this video, Randy talks about the highlights of the main parts of the shooting board and how they are installed.

I'm impressed, and I'm not easy! QUESTION: If need be, where would you go to get a replacement blade?

The Veritas and Lie-Nielsen shooting planes use standard blades that are in other bevel-up planes. The blade is installed at an angle in the cast iron body. Unless the blade is damaged or can no longer be sharpened, there's no need to replace it. I've been using the same blade in my shooting plane for over five years, and it will likely outlive me.

Don’t buy a shooting plane like he is using. They are incredibly expensive for what they are. Instead but a jack plane and use it as a shooting plane and everything else it can do.

i cant understand how the cutting blade doesnt shave down the side of the shooting board as it works the end grain

I think that because the workpiece is overhanging the sub base by a thousandth or two that the plane is then riding on the workpiece and therefore just missing wearing down the sub base - though I very likely am wrong in which case I share your confusion
