Easy to Build Tube Amp

After my daughter and I made a custom kit guitar we needed an amp for her to use and my little battery powered practice amp wasn’t gonna cut it. Since I’ve always wanted to build a tube amp, but was worried I’d be getting in over my head, there was no better way to jump into that world than by making a 57’ Mini Tweed! It’s a pretty simple project and the amp sounds great!

If you're willing to buy the parts individually, you can source them yourself for a lot less (assuming you have or can build a cabinet for it and a metal housing suitable for the tubes and wiring), and then assemble them according to the plans available online.

Two things...1st.... Welcome to the Covid Crackhead profiteering ERA where "gamer" economics have invaded REAL world finances. That is where one stupid person with more money than brains pays a crazy amount for an item. THEN other people with more money than brains do the same setting the precedence that ALL people have more money than brains and thus crackhead pricing becomes the "norm" Second its Stew Mac EVERYTHING is over priced. Always has been ALWAYS will be.

Great Job Mike!! I just discovered your channel yesterday, while searching KZfaq for other instrument builders & restorers, besides the ones I've been watching for the last 5 years or so. 🙂 I must say that watching this particular video of yours, makes me want to jump right out and order one of those Telecaster Kits, and and Amp Kit as well!! Unfortunately; I personally, will have to wait awhile to order them, though;😮, as I am on Disability, and will have to wait until at least Oct. when one particular bill of mine will be paid off. Rest assured, I WILL eventually, get me both!! 😊 Seeing your Daughter's excitement, got me to fondly remembering some projects I did together with my step-son, while he was growing up! Who knows, maybe I'll end up doing some sort of projects with my one granddaughter, as she always wants to stick close to her "Pa-Pa!" 😊 Take Care & Thanks for the great videos! Am very glad to now be subscribed to your channel! Highest Regards! Ron Abilene, TX.

I’ve been building tube based audio, music and recording gear for 50+ years and have accumulated an enormous stock of vintage parts, tubes etc. If I can ever give you a hand feel free to reach out. This is so wholesome, it hits me home because my dad and I built a 50W JCM800 (granted, it’s a different project and we were both knowledgeable in electronics). If you were able to do this however, I strongly advise you to get into DIY pedals, there are a lot of kits for high-end circuits (such as the klon centaur) for really affordable prices.

I buy from Stew-Mac but way too expensive for me. But the idea of a DIY tube amp with/for my grand daughter who's learning guitar and mandolin gifted from moi are the kind of memories that will never be forgotten.. The SR 15 watt tube amp was only $249 3 years ago. One day I'll get a parts list and commence with the build. And thank you for the video. This was a nicely-done video. The interaction with your daughter is priceless. I do agree with the comments about the cost of the kit. For the price of this kit, you could buy a Fender Blues Jr. which is a better amp. I’ve done a lot of DIY audio electronics projects. The benefits of DIY are many, but saving money rarely is one of them. The benefits of DIY include learning how things work; the satisfaction of making something yourself: development of problem-solving skills; and the ability to make a custom product that you can’t get any other way. With regard to the cost: This is a Stew Mac kit. StewMac products tend to be expensive. However, they sell only high-quality products, usually designed for professionals. They stand behind their products and have exceptional customer service. There are other amp kits available that cost a lot less. This kit included the cabinet, which most kits do not include.

I know you are a newbie but that is an eyelet board, there are also turret boards. Point to point is like a 1930's radio where the components are scattered all over near to where they connect. They use some terminal strips but that's it they jump around from this point to that point. The turret/eyelet board was the next advancement followed by couplets, which were the first multi component components. They would have a few resistors and capacitors in one component usually wire 4 to 8 leads. This is an eyelet board construction though not point to point, just saying, not trying to be the know-it-all a-hole but I figured you would want to know.

Capacitor discharging tip from Gerald Weber of Kendrick Amps: from ground, clip to the first (or in this case only) preamp tube, pin 1. (unplugged of course) Make sure power switch and standby switch are on with volume up. All caps will gracefully drain in a minute or two. I verified this with my Deluxe schematic. They discharge through resistors so its not a quick zap. Of course a 10 watt 100 ohm resistor will also work, but you have to be careful not to miss any caps.

I just wish they'd update these kits to the later models of these amps where the speaker out is between the rectifier tube and the power tube, instead of near the preamp tube (which can often cause squealing and other issues)

Nice video though have to agree it"s a bit on the exy side for what it is compared to what you could get off the shelf. To get it to Australia would be USD 913 / AUD 1351 as there is nothing like Stewmac in Australia that I am aware of. Nothing beats a valve amp which is why I have 7 so it is not hard to see why you went down this path.

@@WoodshopMike if one side is shorted to ground that doesn't affect the function. In fact many Amps have one side of the speaker grounded intentionally. And if your amp uses negative feedback, the other side of the OT has to be grounded

I would point out that the tip about putting a post it note under the terminals over the speaker isnt necessary....you can solder to speaker material so there is no way a dab or two of solder would in any way hurt it!!!! great to introduce a kid to amp building.. her interest level was amazing.. she's a really kool kid.. while the amp kits are nice and easy.. they are also a rip-off financially.. .. and almost everything stewmac is a ripoff too.. i said almost because they do have a few good durable tools and some difficult to source "quality" parts.. but the majority of their stuff.. like 90+% is pure highway robbery.. i suppose you pay for the convenience of their fairly well laid out catalog/website and one stop shopping aspect.. but seriously.. by time you complete a project you could have 2 or 3 of whatever you were making/building/repairing.. if you source quality parts and build an amp from scratch.. actually build a cabinet.. a chassis.. etc.. you can save literally half the $ and have a better amp.. now, if you have never handled a soldering iron before.. don't own a saw or drill.. don't understand how amps work.. this assembly of a kit might be the way to go.. you aren't actually building anything.. you are assembling it.. you didn't design the circuit.. it's a copy of a well know circuit.. and that's good.. it will work.. but so limited.. having the cabinet made saves a lot of time.. and makes the final product look good.. let face it.. 1st time woodworking projects almost never look good for the average joe.. but, cabs are easy to make and you feel pretty good when you turn out a nice one.. chassis are a but more difficult.. working with metal takes a different skill set.. once again.. start cutting and bending steel... when you are done.. it feel pretty good.. ordering resistors and caps from mouser makes more sense.. you can get 100 caps or resistors for cost of one or two from stewmac.. the speaker selection is most critical.. that and good transformers.. mercury or hammond trannys FTW.. and speakers.. spend your money here.. then create a good modded circuit.. no reason to settle for a single "circuit".. when you customize your own you can switch between tweed and blackface and marshall all on the same amp.. add a master volume and 2 channels.. boost and bright switches.. tremolo.. vibrato.. reverb tanks.. add an effects loop and a DI box.. an attenuators.. and multiple ohm taps for external cab varieties.. take the best of all your favorite amps and build that into yours.. you are now ready to have some fun.. venture out and really build the next one.. make it a project with your daughter.. learn together.. she's well on her way to being a great musician and maybe the next Alexander Dumble..
