Easy to DIY Compost Bin using wood pallets

The one thing that's missing and that I desperately need on my allotment is a compost pile. There's just so much waste material I have from clearing the new plot and I want to reuse it rather than get rid of it.
Right now I have a plastic compost bin but it's really not cutting it. It takes such a long time for material to break down in mine and I think that's because it's not large enough to create a warm composting environment. I also don't have that many worms so they're not helping with breaking down the material either.
I've decided to dedicate space at the bottom of my new plot for good-sized composting units. Using heat-treated wood pallets, I create the first bay in this video and then begin filling it with waste material, grass clippings, and spent coffee grounds from a local coffee shop. Coffee grounds have a neutral pH once they've been brewed and are a great 'green' material to add to compost.
In this video:
✽ Building an easy compost bin using wood pallets
✽ Filling it with garden waste that will become compost
✽ Green and brown materials for compost
✽ Composting spent coffee grounds

I have had great success adding shredded paper to my compost pile. My mail box is a never ending source for this. I sort out glossy paper or cellophane and what remains I shred and dump into my compost. Less trash, more compost and better worm production makes for a big win. I also use shredded paper as top cover instead of mulch to reduce water evaporation when the situation calls for it.

I have an old rotary mower , with a bag fitted .I stick any thin branches, woody trimmings -leaves -hedge cuttings on the ground , lay them out thinly and run over the top with the mower to chop it all up before putting in the compost . You can cut the grass at the same time and everything is ready mixed

Excellent video. Thank you. One suggestion .... if the pallet boards are vertical, they are more likely to let the composting material fallout of the bin than if the boards were horizontal. Might be worth swapping those two around and seeing the impact.

We also put "red wiggler" worms (only a big handful) in our compost, and they multiply, and help it all to decompose faster.

I wouldn't even put a pallet on the front. I'd just put some horizontal boards in between the last 2 slats near the front that you can pull out to retrieve your composted dirt.

You don't NEED to, but it will expedite the process immensely; particularly if you compost during the summer like I do. I have plenty of room, so I have different piles (I don't bin) that I keep turning back and forth. I tarp them during the hot period, and then leave them open over the winter, as they cold compost down for several more months.

I am so glad I found this. I thought of using pallets for 3 compost bays but never knew about the stamping HT vS MR. Will search correctly now. I do have the premade plastic ones our county provides but you are correct I don’t get enough compost. Question. I do have access to Steel posts to make sure the pallets stay in place I assume these will not be harmful? Thank you. Have a great day. 🇨🇦

Why would you need to move the compost to a 2nd bin?
@joan-lisa-smith
@joan-lisa-smith Жыл бұрын
To turn it, pretty hard to flip and turn right down to the bottom when it's that deep. You use a pitchfork and start lifting the pile at the top into the second bin then it ends up at the bottom, the stuff on the bottom then ends up at the top of the pile in bin two. You can then either wait a bit then flip it back to the first one or leave it in the second section and start a new pile in the first. I have a 3 section pallet one and two are used to turn and flip one pile and the third is where I stack it once it's all ready while I start a new pile in bin one again. I have also used three sometimes because I divide it according to nutrients for different kinds of vegetable beds, so one compartment for compost heavy in nitrogen, another less rich one and a third just for leaves to make leaf mulch as an add in for the other two piles. There's all sorts of things you can do :)

Nice video. My bins are made from pallets but nowhere near as neat! Just one thing, here in the UK it's recently been quite fashionable for to people to add coffee grounds but there is solid scientific research that shows it's a bad idea. Look up 'allelopathy' for more info. I've now stopped using it and others are following suit. Just a thought.
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! In regards to coffee: There’s a big difference between spreading a thick layer of spent coffee grounds as a mulch and using fine layers of it when making compost. Also, the scientific paper that James Wong refers to in the article seems to be one based on land that’s been used to grow coffee for decades. Coffee is high in nitrogen and good for compost making - compost after all should be made with a good mix of materials rather than just one. No need to stop using it if it’s used in compost making. Hope this helps.
