I was on a mission to find lightweight, easy to make rocks. These work well for smoother rocks or those in the background but you can use the painting technique on any rock face.

Looks an ideal medium to create a cave in the rock face, especially if modelling Canada or the US. The shaping would be best done near a vacuum hose, if possible.

I normally have my hoover out but couldn’t get the camera angles this time. If you hold the hoover between your knees and carve over it, it grabs a lot of the dust.

I love the result Kathy, superb looking rock pieces. When I do get to build a large layout, I wish to have the end, background scenic looking like this. To have sided rock faces rising on both sides of a track line as one's loco travels off into the distance. So as the rails curve away into a tunnel deep-set tunnel mouth. The train will hopefully look like it vanishes past the curve with surrounding trees at track levels just blocking the view enough to give this effect.

Nice way to exit a layout. Hiding entry and exit points is always a challenge but sounds like you’ve nailed it.

I like your idea. I found a way to make fractures. I used a hot knife and melted in the fractures.

Interesting and I bet it worked well. The fumes must be noxious so another one that needs good ventilation/extraction.

Thank you. Celotex is the easiest to get hold of and I think it carved nicely, it’s just not very robust if you knock it.

Kathy, First please excuse any misspelling or puncations. Had my annual Eye Exam this afternoon and my eyes are still dilated. I love this foam board technique. I have used something similar for mountains which already have their shape. Then I fill in with this style of rock modeling. There is another technique you may wish to experiment with. Blown Aerosol Foam. It's a home renovation product you would use to seal up gaps in insolitation. Follow the can instruction as to pre-shaking the can or not. Invert the can with the nozzle down. A spray short bursts. The foam will expand, setup, and harden. When hard, or cured, apply a second coat. Then a third or as many as you see fit. Once you have a general rock formation follow your technique by carving details and stratiations. Use a heat gun to seal all surface irregularities. That followed by your painting process. I would guesstimate more than 75% of my home layout uses both of these techniques, as well as Epoxy Resin poured into pre-made molds, or crumpled aluminium foil, for rock work. Interesting material. This might be usable for my modeling of Nebraska - contrary to the opinion of people on the coasts, Nebraska is not completely flat! Many of our landforms are from wind and rain ersion versus fractured rocks.

Hi Kathy, I didn't realise that we needed PPE for modelling too :-) I tried you idea and it works well, but I only had a Dremel flappy wheel which was far too aggressive on everything apart from the slowest setting. It was still pretty random but I am pleased with the results so thanks :-)

There’s definitely some areas you need PPE! I imagine a flappy wheel would be but there’s loads of other different attachments to give a variety of looks. Some foams are denser than others and Dremel better.

@@KathyMillatt agreed. I think I have managed to wear out or break just about every attachment for my dremel over the past two months. I am waiting until our local model shop re-opens and I can actually go in and smell the plastic :-) PS You mentioned grout, what type do you use please I am going to order some to experiment with.

@@rainsburysb I just use tile grout. I pick a colour I like such as a brown and if it is unhanded (which is normal in the UK it seems) then I add sand so that the glue can run through it otherwise it just beads on the surface.

Kathy, they look good but I’m surprised you don’t use the military modeller method which is the opposite application of colour. Dark to light and as you get to the lightest colours its more like a dry brush technique. This way allows for the darks to be in the crevasses right from the start. You are a military modeller if I remember correctly, have you tried their method on these rocks. The foam idea is a solid one and has a lot of potential. Thank you

I’m actually a model railroader first but I love military techniques. I’m not a huge fan of dry brushing everything but they do get great results. I just find it uses a lot of the lighter colour paints so takes longer and you need to put thicker coats on than these thin layers which are effectively glazes. Plus, there’s not a lot of texture in these rocks to bring out.

I was thinking it could be used too - perhaps as ash ballast or tarmac texture (depending on scale and how fine it is).

Probably. It’s fine enough to be used as cinders and there’s certainly enough of it!

The end result looks great, but I'm really put off by all that black foam dust. It looks really evil stuff. I wonder if there's any sort of expanding foam filler that could pick up the details in something like the Woodland Scenics rock moulds. You asked what else we'd like to see: I like to see more of your model railway layout, please.

Hi Kathy. Another nice video!! Just one question - do you think that the Isopropyl alcohol & glue etc (starting at 12:10) would be suitable as a pigment fixer? I am looking to fix very fine aluminium oxide power between bricks to give a mortar course. The thickness of the gap for the mortar line is 0.8mm. Thanks, Pete.

I find IPA will fix pigments very well on its own, as long as you don’t run them much. It should be fine on mortar. Give it a go and see what you think.

Kathy, have you had any scenarios where the piece needed water resistance for use with a small water feature? Could the initial painting stage be modified by using a water resistant paint? I’ve experimented with a product called “Drylok” painted over an aerosol can expanding foam called “Great Stuff Pond & Stone”. This method of laminating sheets of foam seems to produce more detailed results! My application is for use in a tropical vivarium with live plants. Cheers from Virginia!

Hi. I never use real water so I have never tried to waterproof. I guess a good top coat would be the answer.

@@tomasjackson6748 Tomas, I've never done it so I would hesitate to recommend anything as I couldn't be certain it would work. Perhaps an aquarium channel would have a sealant that they do recommend? I know they do some amazing stuff that is also waterproof.

I do have a hoover going normally but it’s hard with the video angles. That dust got everywhere though. 🦝
