Just spent $20 on a helical drain extractor that did absolutely nothing. Was about to run back to exchange for an expanding extractor when I came across this gem of a video. The proposed solution worked flawlessly on the very try. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!

Awesome suggestion, I cut two grooves on the inside of the drain with a multitool and then did this. Worked great 👍

I've been fighting one of these all morning and it was kicking by butt. Took a break and luckily thought to see if KZfaq had an answer when I saw your video. It took longer for me to find my crow bar than to have this broke POS tub drain removed!! Thank you so much for making this video!

Worked awesome!! Worked fine on a plastic tub, just drove the flat bar in enough to grab and did not hammer the snot out of it so not worries about cracking. Thanks for this idea, saved me a lot of extra work in trying to figure out how to get this removed.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! DYI David🙏. This worked perfectly. I actually had to use a file to make to groves on either side of the drain, because my crowbar was about a mm wider than the drain. But once I did that I was able to hammer the crowbar in slightly and have just enough leverage to slowly unscrew the drain. You honestly saved me an expensive service call. Much appreciated

Thank you! I have a plastic tub so needed to be more careful, since my husband passed away I have to figure this stuff out for myself as I hate calling someone for such a small job. Had to use the other end of the crowbar and pliers to help me turn it but worked great!!

My husband and I spent hours trying to remove our drain piece and finally the T broke. It wasn't till I watched this video and we ended up kind of hammering around the metal drain piece to help lift it and then used the pry bar as David said.. worked like a charm ! Thank you David!

Thanks for this video, I bought the tools and broke the “ T “ in the drain. I was not sure what next hammer and chisel? Saw your video gotta be worth a try .I did it the same as you with the bar at first and once I got about a full turn in a half loose switch end on the nail bar and used adjustable wrench and out she came . Thanks.

Today I said screw it gonna replace that sucker. Had to get the tool, ruined a few channel locks and even damaged the tool. Finally had to use a steel rod and a breaker bar to get that sucker loose. It was WAY tight. Gasket sucked to get in and out but by accident, one pry and it slipped the last loop. 2 minutes later putty on and tightened. All that hassle for like 2 min repair. Hopefully it will last 17 years like the other one did.

They sell a $20 tool at every Lowe's and Home depot to remove the drain. It looks like a 1.5" socket wrench with teeth on the outside to grab onto the drain. Not worth risking damage to your tub by hammering a crow bar into the drain.

WARNING! To everyone getting ready to try this: be careful using the hammer. If you hit it too hard, especially on those really old/rusted set ups: you may knock the actual drain loose. Be careful! I didn’t think I had hit it hard enough to do that 😢

There is only one word involved here that may cause you and I to fight: "easy" I just fought the battle of the century against one of these. Oh, I won. I always win in then end. But there was nothing "easy" about it. House is 58 years old. They get adamant about staying where they are after 6 decades in place. Started with one of those plug and turn type tools. Regular wrench would not budge it. Pipe on the regular wrench would not budge it. Breaker bar would not budge it. BIG breaker bar would not budge it. Finally I pulled out my impact hammer and hit it with 750 FTlb of torque. That snapped the plug and turn tool in two. And that is when I came here. I followed your advice. I used the multi tool to create the notch. I heated it up. I banged it with a chisel and it moved...but very little and only after enough hammer swings to wear me out and cause me to have to go take a break. Cut out the putty with a utility knife and sprayed underneath with PB blaster. I banged some more. Then I went out to the garage and got the wood chisels, because they have longer handles and I was beating the hell out of my placement hand. I beat some more. It was moving now...but slowly...VERY slowly. Finally, I brought in the air compressor and air hammer. THAT...finally got it done. Took me over 4 hours to win that fight. You are right, your method DOES work. But brother, there was nothing "easy" about it.

I’ll try that someday. I just had the most stubborn 1-3/8” drain. After trying several techniques, including both Superior extraction tools, I finally got it removed with 20 seconds of blow torch to soften the metal. That allowed the 1-1/2 extraction tool to bite better and turn.

Banging tools around in a porcelain, aka easy to chip, tub😖😖 Put down padding anywhere a tool even might touch. Preheat to loosen...think hairdryer. Think prep before brute strength.

Doing that to a ceramic bath tube and you would break it. You can get an angle grinder with a cutting blade and make several horizontal marks and then use a chisel to tease it out......and that would come off easily......of course, you are not going to reuse the old assembly.
