I will show you a simple exercise that will help you get to know your watercolor paper and master the timing for wet-on-wet technique. We'll also talk about tools and tricks to help you control the drying time 💜 REAL-TIME (normal speed) version of the Parrot & Lillies tutorial, along with extra commentary, black & white outlines, will be available on my PATREON feed in June: / annabucciarelli
🎨 WATERCOLOR SUPPLIES I USED:
QOR WATERCOLOR MEDIUM: amzn.to/3sbaeV8
GLOVE: Protective Glove from Laughing Paw: amzn.to/2LLqcyC
PAPER: Fluid and Arches Cold Pressed: amzn.to/2PTCian
BRUSHES: Escoda Chronos

This may be the most useful video on watercolor technique that I have ever seen. So many artists talk about water control in tutorials, but they seem to focus almost entirely on getting the correct consistency of water and pigment on the brush, then applying it to dry paper. This shows exactly how to take advantage of damp paper, how to test the effects, and how time and gravity influence it. Learning this skill will also give me the knowledge to add to and work with painted areas as they dry. Thank you!

This is enormously helpful, thank you. As a beginner it's hard to know just how to get the wet on wet to work for you. This makes it easier to work it out and then understand it when its happening on your paper. Thank you.

I tried this with both my Komorebi and Paul Rubens' sets on Canson xl and the arches cold press 140 and I came to the conclusion that it has to be the paint quality that makes a difference. I tried several different timing lengths and made sure I followed as closely along with your instructions. The arches paper was far better than the Canson. But I didn't get close to your results. Strange paint things happened. I'm going to buy some of the paints you recommend and see if I get different results. This was an EXCELLENT exercise to test out my supplies and I was seriously looking for this. Thanks so much 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩💖
@AnnaBucciarelli
@AnnaBucciarelli Жыл бұрын
Very interesting! I am not surprised about the difference you found in Arches vs Canson 😊 as far as paints go I am not familiar with those 2 brands. You are absolutely right in your thinking, the quality of watercolor will affect the flow wet on wet. Student grade paints have less pigment in them (even more expensive brands with student grade sets like Cotman by W&N ) and the color doesn’t spread as quick (even on the highest quality cotton paper). Either way, these kinds of experiments help us understand our supplies much better so we can get the most out of them 😊 I am so glad you found this useful! 💜

Very useful exercise, Thanks for sharing, please explain difference and use between cotton and cellulose paper and oblige.....
@AnnaBucciarelli
@AnnaBucciarelli Жыл бұрын
Cellulose is simply doesn’t work for watercolors / avoid it as it won’t allow the paint to flow properly. As a compromise I occasionally use 50% cotton but only for those paintings that don’t require more than one layer. Watercolor pigments are meant to flow through water that gets slowly absorbed in cotton surface. Cellulose doesn’t absorb water. If cotton is not available, It’s better to work with another medium like gouache 😊 hope this helps!

I started doing this again when I got new Fluid paper - my first attempt on that paper felt off (I did a magnolia but threw it away). Also it reminded me just how much I love Watercolor medium - and how much it actually helps with wet on wet - like double the drying time and way better blends. I don’t think it matters as much with arches but with fluid it definitely makes a huge difference 😊❤️

I noticed that your paper does not pucker when you wet it, whereas mine does. I’m sure it is a difference in quality, but is there anything to do to control it? It definitely added another variable to this exercise since there are little valleys in my paper. Thank you so much ✨
@AnnaBucciarelli
@AnnaBucciarelli 10 ай бұрын
I use blocks of paper for the most part to avoid this buckling effect and skip stretching 😊 essentially it’s 10-20 sheets glued on all 4 sides. You peel them off as you go. Slightly pricier than regular paper but we’ll worth it imho 💕

As watercolor paper ages does this timing change. As the sizing breaks down does the paper dry faster? I think some of my paper is a little old.

Good question. I don’t think I’ve ever had a paper block for longer than 3 months but my guess is yes, eventually due to moisture level changes 😊

Do you always use a timer? And what about the amount of water on your brush and in your paint. I’m thinking that both of those impact how much the lines spread?
@AnnaBucciarelli
@AnnaBucciarelli Жыл бұрын
You are 100% right, the amount of water will affect the drying time. But you sort of get used to it over time loading the brush in a consistent way. No timer on my table - trust me once you go through this process a few times you get used to your paper and know exactly when its about to be dry :)
