I can’t pay $15,000 for a no till drill! I can’t afford a $5,000 crimper! In this video we look at an easy way to no to establish no till food plots without a crimper and without a drill. I’ve used this technique for fall plots for several years. It’s a great way to get the benefits of no till…when you don’t own a drill!

Enjoyed your video. I do my plots very similar to how you do yours. I attach a Fimco motorized spreader to the front of my side-by -side with a boom sprayer behind. Seeds down and current crop killed in one pass. Then like you I use a cultipacker or lawn roller to lay the dead plants down. I just built a four foot wide crimper his August for $700.00. I’ll recover the cost of building it in two years since the cost of glyphosate increased 150% here in the north.

I use my JD 445 and tiller ... not running and just run tines over the cover crop as my cultipacker/crimper. I will use cultipacker too. still spray some. all my plots are very small and some hard to get to... and all work differently.. I do till from time to time if my cover didn't grow. I also worry about too heavy of a cover and seed not getting to exposed dirt

I am going to try an aerator as a substitute drill. My plots are relatively small and timber company sprays what and when they want, but woe unto anyone else spraying, so mowing or using a hedge trimmer like a sickle bar mower is about the limit. I used a chain harrow to break up the surface last year after mowing and got some things to grow, but it was pretty late sprouting because of the hot & dry and rain not coming until late. They had clearcut all around then sprayed, which meant most everthing got nipped as soon as it emerged on my plots, before season opened. Might get a couple of years of peace to get some things going.

I've done some research and if you get into contact with your local soil and conservation agencies in the county your in or one close they have drills you can rent for about $15 a acre.. me and my buddy going to go in on it together. Dr Grant knows his stuff makes my food plot cost stay way down not having to fertilize.

My county doesn’t host a drill…but I was able to locate a friend who does. Just finished up summer blend. The beans I planted in vid got devastated by deer usage/ hog damage! Thanks for info and for watching!

Very similar to how I plant my plots. I prefer to broadcast into standing live vegetation first and then I will use a lawn roller to flatten everything down, and get better seed/soil contact. I then spray the flattened vegetation with glyphosate to get a good kill. This method allows me to complete process at one time, and I don’t have to make an additional trip.
@whitetailcartel80
@whitetailcartel80 Жыл бұрын
I really like that method…anything that saves time and fuel is a bonus! We’ll be giving it a try this fall!
@justadbeer
@justadbeer 10 ай бұрын
So when you say standing live vegetation, does it matter if it's all weeds? Or does it need to be something like rye? I'm old school and want to till the field, and my kid wants to do something like this and skip the tilling. I'm also assuming that anything you broadcast must be Round-up ready
@butleroutdoors2188
@butleroutdoors2188 10 ай бұрын
@@justadbeer it can be weeds, but as you continue to use this technique, you can use standing cereal grains to broadcast into. Extremely thick/tall grass doesn’t do well because it creates too dense of a thatch, and plants struggle to grow up through it. The seed doesn’t need to be roundup resistant, but you want to make sure you have enough thatch covering the seed that it doesn’t get soaked with roundup.

Questions did you make the spray boom , Wanting to try this on a summer plot this year . Last year heat so I have little crop up but to many leaves , I can spray( no boom ) and roll with a roller ,thinking spray , seed , mow . Will mowing hurt the seeds . Any help ?

I did not make the boom…it’s a fan tip ( no boom) from northern tool..love it. Depends on how thick your current crop is, but, I’d probably just spray, seed and roll. Thanks for watching!
