In this how to video I show you easy white background lighting methods for product and portrait photography.
White backgrounds can be frustrating and require a lot of effort in post production if you do not capture them right. For portrait photography, I recommend overexposing a white surface with flash from the sides. Then, use V flats to block any light from coming back into your lens. For products, I recommend a translucent product table so you can light the surface without any shadows.

Beauty Dish : The beauty dish I used in this video was a tester product that was never distributed for sale because it would have likely conflicted with patents from Mola. I totally know what you mean by complex masking and pshop work. Wish I knew this before my jewelry product shoot in November. Was such a time drain to edit the images for a clean background. I had used a white paper bg that you get in one of those portable box shaped product photography mini studios. Now the challenge is for me to come up with something like that which you used here without having to buy one outright. I also wasn't using a strobe but an underpowered led flat panel for video.

Idea for future studio video. 1. Gelling the background. 2. Gelling a model via softboxes. I’ve got the gels you recommended for the round head AD200 but have yet to use them. May need to get some Lee, Rosco or those specific bare bulb ones to use with a softbox.

I actually don't gel backgrounds very often. It's very difficult to get quality saturation levels especially at brighter values.

Thanks for that last part, I am still contemplating getting 2 simple speedlights to cross-light the background (paper) instead of a product table with just one light underneath. You may have actually convinced me to go for the latter.

Made me smile when I saw that Sigma 35mm f1.2 lens :) what huge but good lens. Did you replace this with your Zeiss 35mm?
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 3 жыл бұрын
I bought a camera and they were selling the 35 1.2 with it. But, I have the new 35mm GM ordered and plan to replace my Zeiss with that. Figured I’d just hold on to this Sigma until the GM comes and then compare all 3, then sell whichever 2 I don’t want.

What a great new studio space, Rob! Congratulations. We all knew the low ceiling in your prior studio was going to be a problem.
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'm quite excited about this space! I didn't find the ceiling heights to be a big issue when I moved in to the last space because I really only ever used the studio for solo portraits. But now that my client base has shifted there's definitely a need for more physical space including vertically. Honestly, the ceilings are much less about being able to put lights high up. Instead I was concerned about being able to mount lights from the ceiling just to light from above without stands or booms. Still haven't set that up yet but it's the second of my favorite things, only to the hard floors.

How do you think the Cheetah or Westcott wing reflector compares to the Glow? I was going to order one through Cheetah after seeing your review about their different rice bowls but wasn’t sure how it compared. Ordering from Cheetah is hard for me as they don’t ship internationally meaning I would need to use a mail proxy.
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 3 жыл бұрын
It's the ArcLight from Adorama which I believe is under the Glow brand. I've got it linked in the description. I've had 3 different ones now (Westcott, Cheetah, Arclight), and they are all identical to me.

Rob when u put a light behind the product table,what is the power ratio for it with reference to the key light?.thx
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t measure the light hitting the translucent because it really doesn’t make sense since the goal is for the surface itself to be illuminated to a certain level. So I just up the power until it hits the far right side of the histogram, then add 2/3 of a stop which I’ve found is the realistic white clipping point on my camera.

nice tips! is it possible to get the same results without the vflat's?
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 3 жыл бұрын
You can it just requires more attention. The more of an angle you take with the background lights, the more it will “skip” to the other side and not back into your lens. The more distance you have your subject from the background, the less off a chance they’ll be hit by the rear lights and the less the bounced lights will hit them. The more narrow reflector you use, the less chance for light to flood back towards your subject (but also the less area of the background it will illuminate evenly). This is why I like the V-flats, they really open up the angles of light that you can use.

When I use a backlight under the table I get some white inner glow on the edges of subject. How can I correct this with the same light setup you use?
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Make sure you are exposing the surface as little as possible to retain pure white. Sometimes people just go like 3 stops brighter than necessary, so make sure you aren't doing that. Also the more you bring the object to the front, the further it is away from the "panel" which is now the light source. You can also feather the reflector up so it's putting more light on the background, and rely on the combination of your key light + feathered reflector to get you the white exposure in the front.

Hello! Have you tested mixing the qt600ii and the AD400pro? I mean using them at the same time, one as the main light and the other as a fill, for example. It's possible? Are there discrepancies in timing or color temperature? Thanks!
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 2 жыл бұрын
Discrepancies in timing will be influenced more by their respective power settings (which is dependent on distance, light purpose, and modifier), and discrepancies in color will be influenced primarily by modifier. So, it's hard to say there's any concern, when the concern is more dependent on all the additional variables.

Whats your opinion on the Lastolite Hilite?
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Oh we have one of those somewhere in the studio. I’ll only use it if there are no other options on location. It’s flawed in that too much light goes through in comparison to what it takes to illuminate the surface. Worse, it warms the light a TON. So in close proximities, your subject will have a warm edge light on their shoulders/neck/hair. And since it’s your background, just like using a light directly behind your subject, there’s no possible way to flag the unwanted light without also obstructing your background. Again, I’ll take it if I’m given a drab conference room and no time to load a paper backdrop in, but it’s a last resort.
