Billie, My basement IS a mess. One of the things I have too much of is negatives and slides from 35 years of shooting film! My assets, right? hah. But this is an excellent approach that you have to file naming and storage for your digital files. Maybe it's not too late for me. Great to see you doing so well and paying it forward!

Thank you John Dean! Daunting for sure in negative/slide form. Something I have no idea about! I guess the starting point is getting them scanned, but that's a huge job. One thing is for sure - I would love to see what gems you have in those books. You inspire me and got it all started for me!

Great video! I organize my year folder a little differently. Instead of all shoots under 2020 in chronological order I put subcategories in 2020 (SENIOR, WEDDING, FAMILY, PERSONAL, SPORTS) and then within those subcategories I do like you with the date for the shoot. Makes finding images even easier! Great tips!

That's a great approach. Awesome way to break it down into even more specific subcategories. Thanks for watching!

Very helpful. Thank you for sharing this. I'm still working on my workflow. I have demoed PM but did not really understand it in the brief time I had to play around with it, so I'm still using Lightroom to organize and edit as I find it far more intuitive than PS and I have another full time job so I took the path of least resistance. I love the idea of the consistent naming. While I use the same date forget for all my directories, I never thought to rename my files the same. With winter sports on hold locally, I have some time to redo those and also look at PM. I'm also hearing a lot about PhotoShelter as a portfolio site so I'm going to look at that this winter.
@billieweiss7681

Absolutely Mark! The whole process of file naming, naming folders, and making structures is time consuming and tedious, but makes things much easier on the back end later on. The slow winter is a good time to get it organized! Good luck.

Thanks! I already went back and renamed them. Fortunately, winter should be very busy for me with basketball and hockey, though my county has put a two-week hold on sports due to a rise in student COVID cases, so I'm sending my equipment in for cleaning and enjoying a few weekends catching up at my desk.

Nice tutorial Billie, it's very similar to what I currently do. I noticed you keep your xmp file in your folder, but you didn't mention it. BTW, I also keep my code replacement file of team rooster for easy reference.

Thanks, Peter. Yep good point, I should have mentioned that I keep the XMP file there as well. And great idea with the code replacement! Always makes life so much easier when captioning.

Now that we’ve seen your personal photo archive, how about the Boston Red Sox photo archive? Could you go over the folder and file structure for that? Interested to see how to handle this if you work personally and also within an organization.

This is a great and simple process to follow, question I have is that do we retrospectively go back and rename or just start from now on... Do you feel photo mechanic over Lightroom is better for photo management?
@billieweiss7681
@billieweiss7681 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Scott. It's up to you, overall it would help to go back and rename but obviously that's a time consuming process. Personally, I do feel like photo mechanic is better for photo management over Lightroom.

Hello Billie, wonderful tutorial! Very helpful! Is there an industry standard for JPG size/resolution? I usually do original size at 300dpi but I'm wondering if that's not whats expected at a higher level in the industry, Thank you!
@billieweiss7681
@billieweiss7681 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yep, 300 dpi is industry standard. I save mine at 330 dpi but it doesn't make much of a difference at that point!

How much hard drive capacity do you need? I have a mini Mac but considering another one just dedicated to photos, then add on when I run out. What was the two hard drive systems you use?

Great video! Do you think you’ll use photo mechanic plus? For workflows like yours that are so well organized and folder based it seems the database might not be necessary. Thanks for sharing. Will be using some of your methods for my catalog.

Thanks Patrick! Yeah it's a good question - I've fooled around with Plus a bit but so far haven't felt like I really needed it. Maybe at some point in the future, but like you said, I do have an organized system that seems to work, so if it ain't broke don't fix it :p

Any reason you don't use ingest in PM and add batch caption and rename all at the same time? I find it a lot faster.
@billieweiss7681
@billieweiss7681 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! I actually do use ingest in PM with a batch caption. It's definitely the fastest way like you said. I just thought for this video I would show it step by step. I don't do the rename upon ingest though because I'm neurotic and like my edits to start their sequence at 01 and not miss numbers in between. So I wait until I have my final group of edits picked out, then batch rename those. Let me know if that makes sense!

@@billieweiss7681 Thanks for the info. It's always interesting to see how everyone's workflow is just a bit different. I rename at ingest to an "All" folder in the job. Then I make selects and copy those to my selects/transmits folder. I then phoroshop and final caption. I like this, because if I ever need to go back to an unretouched raw file, it has the same name. I just add a "p" to the edited version.

@@billieweiss7681 I was wondering why you not use PM to ingest, rename etc also, since it ingests to 2 locations at same time, but you have explained that part above. I see what you are saying about starting your numbering afresh just on the edits pictures, but if you want to find that same image again in your folder with all images, it will have a different filename. This doesn't bother you at all? Maybe its just me being pedantic !!!! Cheers for your vids mate, they are great !!

When you have Photo Mechanic, but import initially with your Mac, isn't that an extra step? I really like your original two files though, that makes a lot of sense, I just thought you got ingest software to handle all of that for you.

Do a lot of high school sports name year abbreviate home team away team abbreviate sport 2021TJHSAHSFball then store photos by year sub folder by sport. Do you only tag your edited photos? Player name
@billieweiss7681
@billieweiss7681 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard. I apply a basic starting point metadata template to all of the photos I ingest. But for more specific info like player name, etc., i only apply that to the photos I edit as my final selection, if that makes sense.
