I’m a native English speaker learning German in school and the hardest part for me is remembering how “der, die, das” change words like ein, dein, and mein. Depending on the other words in the sentence it could be ein, eine, einen, einem, etc. In English we just say “a” no matter what words are in the sentence. So it’s difficult in German to remember how different words change

The most difficult for me is that it's like a puzzle. First you realize some tiles are missing; so you learn some words. Then you realize the tiles are dynamic -- you learn conjugate them. This is easy or, at least, doable. But then, supposed you have all the words, you have to arrange them before laying them on the table -- and this is the most difficult because you have to change your mindset.

That's what one of the interviewees said - don't stress yourself too much. I find it intimidating and then I am afraid to talk german from fear of making a mistake. I think most languages are like this, it can happen in english as well - because they are human languages there is a bit of gray area. Anyway good luck with German, it is satisfying indeed, when I realize that I am making progress. There is a lot to learn and that is the nice thing about it, whereas with English I feel like I have reached a plateau and am not doing much progress.

@@metalpoe8687 Both "wurde"s in your example should be "würde"s also, like you said with "schön". It sucks trying to do Umlauts when your keyboard doesn't have it, but they are important, because they change the pronunciation and meaning of the word. I usually just add an "e" after the vowel, except when I'm teaching someone. Then, I usually just copy one from text and paste it. There is a Unicode shortcut for it, but that's also a hassle.

My partner and I just started with German (our exam for A1 is in a month) and, honestly, everyone was so shocked when we told them we wanted to learn German! "Oh, my God, German, WHY? Why would you do that to yourselves?!" After spending a few months learning it we find it so easy, I honestly don't know what all the fuss is about. At A1 level the most difficult thing is to remember to use correct gender and use the correct article. Concept of cases is not at all foreign to me (I'm from Croatia, and Croatian has 7 cases, but we do not have articles, so trust me, German is easier, much easier - try learning all the different endings for any of the Slavic languages). The second most difficult thing is understanding trennbare verben. I understand how to conjugate them, that's easy, remembering which prefix to use for which situation is most difficult. Aus, auf, an, ein, statt, mein Gott, anyway. Best part is, when our group has dialouge exercises, we can already spot when someone's using the wrong article for dative, for example, but we can still understand eachother perfectly, in broken German. This led to a question asked by someone: why, on Earth, do they even do these cases and different forms for verbs, look, we can understand eachother perfectly well without using dative or correct person while conjugating verbs!" Ah, well, I don't know, ask ancient Germans why they thought it would be great to use der for masc. N, but also for fem. D, it made sense to them :)

Wow, people are so relaxed in the video about being addressed using Du! Not so here in Erzgebirge. Accidental misuse has earned me a correction (a nice one, but an obvious one) and the German was younger than me, not even older. My husband told me that people in the East are more prone to use Du than some other regions of Germany and I have noted that a Netto cashier our age who likes us switched to Du without mutual agreement (which was cool). Last week while on vacation, a rural waitress outside of Berlin who misunderstood my order (making it my fault since my German isn't good) was so relieved that I made no big deal out of the significant misunderstanding that she switched to Du. My husband later said, "Did you notice she switched to Du when we didn't make a big deal out of it?" Businesses based here often use Du in the workplace. My husband's boss switched to Du in the interview. Businesses based in the West stick with Sie. Then co-workers of the East use Du with each other and Sie with the others. Strangers on the street always use Sie though.

As an Italian native speaker struggling with German, I'd mention two things that drive me crazy: 1) die Umlaute, in particular ü and ö (ä is not a problem); 2) definitely the articles! - I would also say that speaking, in general, is very difficult for me (in contrast to reading and understanding when others are speaking). As a Greek bative speaker I loved learning German in high school. The most difficult part is "der die das" words of course but also the verbs like kennenlernen, spazierengehen and of course the tenses. What is similar to greek is the Nominativ, Akkusativ and Dativ(ancient greek) and this is an easy part.

For some reason I can understand some people better than others, especially if I can read the German subtitles at the same time. Cari is much easier for me to understand, as are certain people with clear pronunciation. Ironically some people who are speaking fast are actually easier to understand for me. I took German in high school and college, all pre-internet. Book learning only is NO way to learn a foreign language, but the internet and you tube have been a fantastic boon for me, in order to listen to the spoken word. Gotta train that ear, ya know? German is very difficult in some ways, but I absolutely would not give up my background in learning grammar-absolutely indispensable because German grammar is difficult and very different from English. Thank you, Easy German!! Thank you so so much! Excellent and very fun videos!
