I think the size of our country is a surprise to some Germans, but I think it is a matter of scale. Germany is a country of ~81.2 million people is a land the size of one of our larger states (about Texas I think). USA has ~320 million people but very spread out. I hosted exchange students in Florida on year and they asked if they could visit the Grand Canyon one weekend. I had to get out a map and show them how that was literally not possible. That being said, public transport (trains buses etc) works very well in Germany, but not so much here. I agree about our "disposable" lifestyle. Trust me, there are many many of us who work very hard to change that, but there are an equal number of people who value convenience over the future waste problems.

My German Professor would actually always compare Germany to the size of Montana. But I totally agree-I feel like a lot of people in Europe don't realize how big states actually are because going from state to state is almost like going from country to country in Europe...

Dave M, the waste problem is about to be greatly reduced in California. We just now banned plastic bags in a lot of stores and supermarkets so that's a lot less plastic being used.

Loved this episode! I laughed when I read the translation at 2:30 as "that's not on" for "das geht doch nicht" in reference to having no network coverage. I come from a British American family and that is definitely a British English phrase, not American and made me laugh because I haven't heard it in quite a while! Also, as someone from the SF Bay Area, I was very sad to hear you didn't find any good coffee. Starbucks is NOT the best coffee in the Bay Area! There are so many great local coffee roasters and cafes there, I'm afraid you must not have had the right local to guide you!

You are correct in that a lot of foreign visitors are surprised by how large the USA is and how large some states are. There are approximately 40 million people in the entire country of Canada. That is also the approximate population of the state of California. To drive from the southern border of California to its northern border by car on the freeways will take you approximately 20 hours, stopping for fuel. California set an all time record for the hottest temperature on earth in 2022, 137 degrees fahrenheit at Furnace Creek in the Mohave desert California. In fact, California is most likely on any given day to have the largest difference in temperature within eyesight of each other on any given day. That would be mount Whitney at 14,505 feet above sea level and Bad Water (in the Mojave desert) at -266 feet below sea level.

Multi-part comment! - Cari's criticisms were very astute. There is a ton of senseless plastic waste in this country. Also unfortunately for our love of the automobile many city plans are victims of urban sprawl. Urban planning is now trying to right those wrongs although often times voters will not support decent public transportation. They'd rather rot in traffic. We could learn a lot from Germany. - Africa is much much larger than the U.S. Not even most people here realize that because many maps are skewed toward the poles. - Why on earth would we export 'Full House' of all TV shows? That just seems absurd. (yes...I admit I watched the show) - I was curious if the Donald Trump star on the 'Hollywood Walk of Fame' was repaired or blocked off with crime scene tape? - Just wanted to say I really enjoyed this series. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. It's a shame you didn't get a chance to experience our shitty weather up here in the Pacific Northwest and opted for palm trees and amazing views instead. Maybe next time... ;)

I am in California, but you should travel through the old South and visit Charleston, SC; Nashville and Memphis TN; New Orleans, LA: Austin and Dallas TX; Louisville KY; St Louis, MO: North Florida; etc. A lot of the creative spice that defines America came from that region, things like , The Blues, Jazz, Country and Gospel music. A lot of writers, Hemingway, Mark Twain, Frederick Douglas, Thomas Dixon etc. give us a more nuianced picture that you can find in today's polemic.

Years later... it's just a contraction of "so ein", here as part of "so ein paar". You'll often hear it with indefinite articles when used in speech, as it just seems to make the sentence flow better: "ein => n", "eine => ne", "einen => nen", "einem => nem". So, for example, "Sie liest 'ne Zeitung" instead of "Sie liest eine Zeitung".

Janusz is "Der Mann". For what it's worth...not *all* of us think trump is heaven sent (I know I don't, lol). That said, I'm surprised that you guys thought Vegas was bigger than what you thought it was. The only reason I say that is I drove cross country for 20 years in the moving business (6 with Mayflower and 14 with Atlas) and I had the same idealized vision of Vegas as you guys did about the US. However, I was the opposite. I thought it was much smaller than what it actually was. Anyhoo, it's a pleasure getting to know you guys, and Janusz...keep rockin that six string :-)

Did you cross the Golden Gate Bridge and then get charged by your rental car company? The system is so complex that even people that live in northern california dislike it . The rental car companies rip you off especially if you do the opt out.

(You can for 2 Germanies into Texas... Illinois is larger than England. But size isn't the issue really, culturally there is no one USA).

Janusz is the real deal. He has encoded message, he does not want to voice his opinion openly so that the channel won't get too political.

Dann an Taj Mahal. An leckeres Essen.

- Great video guys, Im a big fan
