IN ITALY: 1) Nobody uses the minutes countdown before XX:40. I mean it's almost impossible to hear _"8 meno 25"_ because it's rather useless (way better _7 e 35_ ). *One can starts from XX -20* then _"8 meno 20"_ 2) Yes, the 24 hours it's the official way, therefore you can't use any shortcut like _un quarto,_ but in my experience almost nobody uses the 24 hours informally. 3) Using the 12 hours formula you can add _di/della mattina, del mattino, di/del pomeriggio, di/della sera, di/della notte_ *to say if it's AM or PM* 4) Hours are *always feminine* (apart Mezzogiorno, as Katie told) 5) To ask the time it's possibile to use the singular or the plural form: *_"che ora è?" / "che ore sono?"_* worth the very same. But if you need to talk about time in a sentence, for example if you want *to ask for a date you have to use the singular* : _"a che ORA ci vediamo?", "a che ORA è lo spettacolo?"_ 6) *There is another important way very very used* to say _8 meno XX,_ that is _XX alle 8,_ for example _"10 alle 8",_ "20 minuti alle 8" or _"un quarto alle 8",_ which is literally *the same of english* "XX to XX". 7*) Let's talk about the concept of timing: *time in italian is "ORARIO"* . For example: _"orario del negozio"_ (shop hours), _"l'orario dello spettacolo"_ (show time). Therefore asking for a date you can say _"a che ora ci vediamo?"_ (What time shall we meet?) or _"qual è l'ORARIO dell'appuntamento?"_ (what is the TIME of the appointment?"), _"a che ora chiudete?"_ (what time do you close?), _"qual è l'orario di chiusura?"_ (what is the closing TIME?). The word TEMPO is always about TIME (and not only: music and weather as well), but in a wider concept. 8) *You can express the quarter even till XX:45* , so you can say _"8 e un quarto"_ for 8.15, or _"8 e 3 quarti"_ for 8.45. XX:30 can be _8 e mezzo_ or _8 e mezza_ (in this case is so informal that they use masculine (mezzo) or feminine (mezza) for the half hours without any real rule for the gender. But you can never say "8 e 2 quarti", because *30 minutes is never 2 quarters* in italian. 9) 12 PM can be _12_ or _mezzogiorno_ (always way better than 12). 12 AM it's _mezzanotte,_ but honestly I can't say the official way, because it's so rare to listen to. I think it's read 0, but often _mezzanotte_ it's used even in official contexts. For example in TV news you can hear for sure _"Alla mezzanotte del 25 luglio",_ or _"10 minuti dopo la mezzanotte",_ and the radio time signal uses _zero._ 10) In informal way, sometimes you can add _in punto_ (on the dot) o _precisa/precise_ (precise!) to say it's 0 minutes. _"ci vediamo alle 8 in punto"_ or _"sono le 8 precise", "mezzogiorno preciso", "all'una precisa"_ 11) To *avoid misunderstanding telling minutes* from 1 to 9 (or in any case you feel like), sometimes you have to add the word _minuto_ or _minuti._ For example 8.01 it's _"8 e un minuto",_ or "8.09" it's _"8 e 9 minuti",_ but it's just for better understanding and sounding. 12) In Italy we use frequently "quasi" ( _quasi le 8_ ) or "circa" ( _le 8 circa_ ) or "passate" ( _le 8 passate_ ) when minutes are not finishing in XX.X5. For example, if you don't need to be very precise you can say _"le 8 passate"_ for 8.02, or _"quasi le 8"_ for 7.58. It just depends on the *level of precision* you choose, or what kind of *emphasis* you want to give. 14) In Italian AM and PM are spelled "antimeridiano" and "pomeridiano". This is really niche :) 8.30 AM will be "8 e 30 antimeridiane" (being an adjective, remember the plural and the feminine!) 15) _orologio (da polso)_ ⌚wristwatch _orologio (da muro)_ 🕑 wall clock _sveglia_ ⏰ alarm clock / alarm _tabella degli orari / tabella oraria_ 🚆time table _segnale orario_ 🔊 time signal _fascia oraria_ ↔ time slot _fuso orario_ 🌐 time zone _conteggio delle ore_ ✅ time counting (the hours you worked for example) _monte ore_ 📈 amount of hours / total hours _misura del tempo_ ⏳time measurement The word TEMPO in Italian can refer to time, weather, music, grammar. TEMPO CRONOLOGICO is the time. * ) _"In senso orario"_ and _"in senso antiorario"_ *have nothing to do with time* but mean _clockwise_ and _counterclockwise._ 🟫⬜🟥 *In PERFECT/OFFICIAL ITALIAN the verb to say the time IS NOT "DIRE" (like in street talking) but INDICARE.* _"l'orologio indica l'ora"_ (the clock shows the time), _"l'ora indicata"_ (the time indicated) For those who want to practice and listen to good music, there is a beautiful 1995's song called _"Quasi le 3"_ by Francesca Schiavo. Per quanto in italiano sia assolutamente più corretto porre la domanda "che ore sono?" (usando il plurale), spesso mi capita di dire (o di sentire da altri) "che ora è?" (usando il singolare. Penso che grammaticalmente sia un po' impreciso ma intanto si capisce lo stesso, no?! Il bello dell'italiano è che è una lingua flessibile e ugualmente comprensibile anche se non si è perfetti nell'esposizione... 👍😉

Anche in spagnolo le ore sono al plurale, come in italiano; "son las cinco", "son las nueve" (ma "es la una"). Tuttavia, la domanda è al singolare: ¿qué hora es?

Che cosa diciamo se l'ora è 00:15 quando usiamo le ventiquattro ore? Non è ovviamente l'una meno quarantacinque perché è meno di trenta minuti, ma diciamo ventiquattro e quindici oppure zero e quindici?

Per evitare di renderlo noioso, imparo sempre i numeri in qualsiasi lingua che sto imparando scrivendo la data ogni giorno prima di dormire, come facevamo nelle scuole elementari, dove scrivevamo l'ora e come era stata la giornata, ad esempio se era stata soleggiata, piovosa o nuvolosa.
