If you're under the assumption that every wild plant is potentially dangerous and that you shouldn't attempt to eat wild plants, this video is for you. Nothing could be farther from the truth (with some caution taken of course). This is how we lived for hundreds of thousands of years, and it's healthy to get some of this knowledge back. It'll be enjoyable while you're out and about and it'll be fun to show your friends. Plus, who knows, maybe it'll save your life one day.
Here are 5 (+1) edible wild plants, I enjoy eating on the trail.
Dandelions
Currants
Onions
Alfalfa
Violets
Indian Paintbrush

When I was a kid, I practically lived playing outside & I would just graze on wild violets, red & white clover, and dandelion. Oooh, and honeysuckle, but that one was harder to find outside of people's gardens. I was like a little rabbit! My great grandma always said there were no such things as weeds, just wildflowers without a home!

Currant: Your wife is right. :-) Our local wild currant in the PNW, Ribes sanguineum, is gorgeous but it’s berries are seedy, insipid and slimy. You could eat it if you didn’t have anything else, but there’s almost sure to be something better…

Thank you for this wonderful post. I especially enjoyed the shots of my playground, Colorado. Looks like you got to kayak the numbers on the Arkansas river, awesome. I was a raft company bus driver there. But seriously, just found your channel and it’s a delight. Growing up in the mountains of Colorado, learning about wild crafting was a kinda normal thing that is missing in our country now. So kudos to you. Keep it up.👍

Onions are really easy to recognize once you find them the first couple of times They smell mildly like onions even without the bulb. There is also another onion look-alike plant that isn't as good but is also edible. Just be careful to identify them correctly to avoid poisonous plants.

Dandelions. In my opinion, if you can catch the new growth before it blooms, the crowns (the part between the roots and the leaves) are the best part. I've eaten them raw, but according to Euel Gibbons, frying dandelion crowns in bacon fat makes for a fine vegetable.

I live in Sweden so I didn't expect to recognize many of the plants, but att least half om them I did recognize. I recently also watched the video about birch, which was great. But I was a bit surprised and disapointed that you didn't talk about the somewhat rare chaga mushroom that grows on around every 5000 birch trees. Also, can you confirm that they during world war used to perform surgical procedures amongst birch trees because of their anti bacterial properties? Great videos! Keep 'em coming!

Used to find orange currants and gooseberries in the southern Sierra when I was a kid, high up about 5500 feet. In Alaska we have orange currants which in some areas are abundant enough to target. Makes great jelly and jam. We also have black currants, my favorite berry, on the coasts of Alaska which most people never notice. They usually grow along the shore under an overhanging spruce tree. Some bushes may yield a half gallon. One could never find a large quantitiy of them but they make the best jelly and wine.

Yes we used to make the dandelion tea and such. I'm sitting out here in the yard and happened to see a dandelion flower and think well what the hell. I had not ate them like that raw before but not bad. It definitely opens my mind to try more things growing up on the farm I was always told be careful of stuff and not eat them. The things is my one grandma liked polk.. Talk about needing to be careful. But she grew up with people preparing and eating it and she did same canned it I think

How to recognise & avoid poisonous berries??
@sazji
@sazji 2 жыл бұрын
There are very few poisonous berries that are palatable, but there are some exceptions. Certain ederberries edible after cooking while poisonous raw. Some Solanum (nightshade) berries can also taste sweet, at least initially, and some can be okay ripe but poisonous if they’re still green. There’s no single formula; you just need to learn the plants to be sure.

I think wild violets are one of the best tasting plants. A lot of wild edibles are really bitter. Violets are not bitter. The flower at sweet.

identification: You really want to learn the "ribes" leaf. That's how I recognize the berries out on the wild. If you can recognize the leaf, then you know you are safe to eat the berries of any variety of ribes. "Currants (not to be confused with black currant which is a grape), gooseberries as you indicated, but also jostaberries, which you showed in your video but did not identify.

Ive always known you can eat some wild plants but, as oregon trail has taught me, its far too easy to die by mistaking an toxic plant for an edible plant... the risk is far greater than the potential reward when we have reputable sources nutrients so unless i was at risk of dieing due to malnutrition caused by all other sources being inaccessible it, its cool information to have but not exactly practical unless youre regularly are away from modern food sources.
