In culinary school, my teachers all taught us to prepare for working or running a Michelin star restaurant. I hated it, and it's probably because running a place like Sally Bell's has always been more of a dream for me. I don't want to charge 40 dollars a plate. I want to serve affordable, rib sticking comfort food to people who really appreciate it.
@Razzy1312
@Razzy1312 7 жыл бұрын
That's why I never went to culinary school. I love to cook - but not the rigid, by the book, plating matters, recipes must be perfect or they are trashed kind of cooking. I want to cook from the soul, not like it's a science. It's good to know the basics, but beyond that it seems like a bunch of speciality information only useful for those that want to go into the high-end culinary business.

Wowzer Bowser I've eaten everywhere from dollar lunches to hundred(s) of dollar lunches. The best damn food I've ever had in my life was affordable. Did the same thing as I did in the States in France and Italy and the same result. My favourite restaurant is a little Korean-American place in Tacoma, WA called "Goofy Goose". Best damn BBQ I've ever had in my life.

I like how they employ a lot of old people. I know having jobs for the young is very important but its nice to see there are places that will employ older people. A lot of old people are not ready to retire and are super bored, get depressed or suffer financially and need to keep working so I really appreciate that. It also guarantees that the food is extra good it seems! Who doesn't like a grandma made lunch?

To be fair, some people will wait an hour to sit down at a chain restaurant where most of the food is usually frozen for long periods before it gets to them... but at least some of that food is hard to replicate in taste. Most of the foods in this place are so simple, inexpensive, and non-time consuming that I'd find it hard to imagine why anyone would bother.

In many of the southern or black homes there are no cookbooks. Most of it has been passed down from generation to generation and everyone cannot cook. It isn't as easy as reading a cookbook for many people. I wouldn't call it cooking if you don't know how to properly season food. Seasoning food seems to be an issue in the north and parts of the northwest and southwest.

You could have yourself and (3) generations of your family thrown in a concentrating camp for "TREASON" to starve abd performs hard labor. Or in China where certain words are punishable by death. for example: -COUP (if you're on the phone and you want to talk about building a CHICKEN COUP, most of the time you'll be disconnect with a recorded message saying you violated a law) -JASMINE: I know....Jasmine...and China has a HUGE market for Jasmine tea. -and you can't talk or admit/confirm thay the Tiananmen square incident happened. All books, newspapers, movies and t.v. her either been altered or pushes ripped out ..... I just realized something......my rant has nothing to do with you or was intended to offended you. It’s not as bad as regular fast food, regular fast food is processed and full of additives and preservatives. Those things nock out your natural digestion and will kill you. This place, although some of the items might be slightly fatty, doesn’t have all of that. They make everything home made down to the mayo. No preservatives , no nothing. That’s what makes it better for you. Your body was designed to digest natural oils and fats. Not the kind of junk that fast food gives you. If we had more places like this all of us would be better off!

I started coming to Sally Bell's when I was a child in the 1960s. My mother would drag me downtown to shop at the Thalhimers and Miller & Rhoads department stores (there were no suburban malls - they didn't exist), and as a reward for my good behavior we'd swing by Sally Bell's for a box lunch. It didn't take long for me to look forward to shopping. Years later I worked across the street for a few years. At lunch time I'd walk across Grace Street for a box lunch with a caramel cupcake; you had to get there by 11:30 or so or risk the caramel cupcakes being sold out. For those who've inquired, in COVID-world Sally Bell's business is greatly reduced. Those sweet little ladies have been furloughed for many months and the business has been operating with a small staff of what appears to be college-age students. As of May 2021, the Grace Street store was sold to VCU and at the new Broad Street location they still are not allowing customers inside but are taking phone and on-line orders and deliver to customer cars in their rear parking lot. I hope they can weather this storm; it must be very difficult financially.

So glad I somehow stumbled upon this video. Pride in their home cooked items. But what really struck me was their pace. Time taken to frost, assemble and even line up the wax paper before folding! I'd assume with such a popular demand for product there'd be more speed taken to prepare. Must be one more reason to boost morale of the workers. Clearly their attention to detail is appreciated.

MaryAnn Sepke they have no reason to speed up anything. The service they’re providing is good from the amount of customers they have.

Me too MaryAnne. I live in North Carolina but try to make it to Richmond once or twice a year just because I love that city and it's history. I never knew about Sally Bell's until I googled in "Great diners in Richmond, va." and up it popped.

I have no idea how this popped up on my KZfaq feed. I'm so glad it did. I grew up in Birmingham. I love when traditional foods like this are so appreciated. And what a huge compliment to this place, that people consider this as good as their mother's or grandmother's. Now, I'm hungry.😁
