All-shrimp food trucks are popular lunch destinations in Oahu's North Shore, but none top the island fame (and proliferation of graffiti) of Giovanni's. Host Lucas Peterson stops by to see what all the fuss is about.
Eater is the one-stop-shop for food and restaurant obsessives across the country. With features, explainers, animations, recipes, and more - it’s the most indulgent food content around. So get hungry.

I remembered going here every weekend while I was on active duty. It used to just be a large tent. Even got to sign the truck. That was in 2003. The spicy garlic shrimp was the BEST. The drive was worth it.

i have tried it many times, it is really good. I like it especially when there is not much mozzarella on the pizza, and the prosciutto is cut thick and is a bit dry. I think the goal is to have the pineapple be the juiciest thing on the pizza. If the thing is floating on sauce or cheese i can see it tasting bad. Maybe thats how some people got the bad experience. I can control this however since i either make the pizza myself, or i order it from a good restaurant that know what they are doing, i dont really mind the price since i only order for special occasions.

Leo Lujan again, many people might have tried it and not liked it. Everyone has their own taste. Yes there are people who just jump on the bandwaggon and think they are cool because they share this sentiment, even if the never tried the food, but after all, its the internet. Everyone here has a phd in something and an uncle at the nsa, also countless experiences.

What are you talking about Lucas? "Food trucks" or lunch wagons as we call it in Hawaii has been around for at least 50 years, so I don't know where you getting your information from. It may be a new thing on the mainland but on Oahu you could find them all over the island, especially around construction sites and industrial areas where the working men and women could find an affordable and convenient place to eat.

I post in another comment, but yea Lucas trip to Hawaii has been a let down, the worst he has ever done, I don't know if he has someone else doing research or himself. Looks like no effort whatsoever was put into this trip.

Tama Toa don't flatter yourself. lunch carts and wagons and whatever you want to call them - food in wheels- have been popular all over the country since industrialization. the hipster term "food truck" is new, but not the concept.

You are correct about lunch wagons being a part of growing up in the old days. My uncle owned one back in the early 60's. I've eaten a lot of plate lunches with my wife when we were going to the University of Hawaii back in the early 70's. Our favorite was the beef curry plate. Sitting on the grass sharing a plate in the gentle breeze is among our fondest memories. The heyday of the lunch wagon in Hawaii is pretty much over - probably due to the amazing amount of eateries available to the hungry.

I was born in the 50s We ate out of food trucks since I was a baby. Depending on whether or not we wanted spaghetti or stew, we would frequent certain trucks mostly at the beach where they fed hungry, cold surfers primarily. Because of government restrictions, their popularity waned for years but new trucks equipped to cook fresh food with refrigeration made a comeback by the 90s. Not very popular in Hawaii? Sorry, we probably were eating out of food trucks first. But what I will tell you is that Giovanni's is most definitely the first of all the shrimp trucks on the North Shore. I used to go to them since the 70s when they were the one and only shrimp truck around. There was no eating space, just some sand, grass and a garbage can. Now, it's a commercial hub of activity. But the shrimp has remained the same. Good, garlicky, fresh and made to order even through a change in ownership.
@MaureenKo1
@MaureenKo1 7 жыл бұрын
The popularity grew from Giovanni's because there are now several shrimp and prawn farms nearby. You can buy fresh shrimp by the pound. I used to buy bags of fresh, live prawn and take them home to cook. As we say here on Oahu, bus da mout! (Will bust your mouth!) I've tried all the trucks and they LOVE to say they are the original. I'm an old bag. Trust me, I've taken family and friends there for years. Giovanni's was the first and GIOVANNI'S IS KING.

Lucas you are 110% incorrect when you say "food trucks were not popular in Hawai'i up until recently". I think Hawai'i invented the food truck. They were called "Lunch Wagons" and they were everywhere especially in Honolulu along the water fronts and in the industrial areas providing delicious affordable lunches for blue-collar workers. I am pushing 60 years, and was raised here, and I remember as a kid my dad buying me "plate lunches" at the lunch wagons at Kewalo Basin on the Honolulu waterfront, and along Sand Island Road, or the airport industrial area. Were talking over 50 years ago, and lunch wagons here predate me by decades to pre WWII. They are still around and popular with working class people in parts of Hawaii few tourists will ever visit. You missed out not trying these real parts of Hawai'i's culinary history and culture. You also missed out not trying Romy"s Kahuku Prawns & Shrimp located in Kahuku on the northern most point of Oahu. Romy's has the freshest shrimp because Romy's farms their shrimp in the ponds right behind their shrimp hut. Best fresh prawns & shrimp in Hawai'i.

This was local news way back when: the current operator is the second owner (as you saw on the video) and bought the business from the original “Giovanni” for a hefty $400,000, including his secret recipes. Giovanni then regretted his decision and got some local thugs to try to take back the business but was not successful.
