Ok so here's the thing. I'm a die hard New Yorker. I'm very proud and defensive of our food culture. But I just can't deny it. Connecticut has the best pizza in the USA. And not just the famous places like Modern or Pepes. The bar is insanely high. I know I might get flamed for that but it's true, at least for me. Great review as always James!

Next time you’re in New Haven, give Zuppardi’s a try. Definitely go for the clam pie there. Modern’s eggplant pie is my all-time favorite out of all the New Haven places, though.

Yale’s art museum definitely isn’t your typical ‘college gallery,’ so I’m honestly not surprised at the variety in their offerings

As much as I can feel stifled in my city (New Haven) and desire a change of scenery often, I love seeing people come to enjoy one of the few things we're known for outside of Yale 🍕. Sally's, Frank Pepe and Modern are all good, but there are a lot of other hidden gems sprinkled throughout the area. Connecticut style lobster rolls are also the best.

Nice to relive my experience there, through your video, at Modern and more. I attempted to visit the art museum but they were closed for so long due to the pandemic. Perhaps I'll get a chance to check it out next time. I agreed with your preferences, Pepe's is definitely the best. I enjoyed Modern but it was a bit heavy. The Yale campus is gorgeous, I love New Haven.

I was there a few days ago, and it was bloody busy. The atmosphere was delightful. Now, the only problem was that they were making them so fast, that they neglected to rake out the oven every now and then. I didn't get just char, but also a burnt dust top and bottom. Nothing a napkin couldn't fix, but it made for more work. Fork and knife until I got up much closer to the crust. Took the leftovers home, and pizza yesterday. It comes back to life rather nicely. Modern, Sally's, Frank's -- It's New Haven. It's good. I also like NYC pizza, and have a place nearby that makes a banging good interpretation of it. Pizza. It's good. 🍕

I lived in Boston. After seeing your IG Modern Apizza post. I made a trip to Modern to try their pizza. It was really good. I like it !

That pizza looks incredible; I took the trek from NYC to New Haven a year+ ago for Sally's and its always a little silly to go so far for pizza but it was delicious.

For a future visit, make time for lunch or dinner at a super authentic Thai restaurant halfway between Modern and Wooster St-September in Bangkok (indoor or outdoor seating available), and for art the Yale British Art Museum across the street from Yale Art Gallery. For ice cream, try Ashley’s on York Street around the corner from the Apple Store on Broadway (great coffee next door at Blue State).

I ride my bike on the canal trail from Cheshire. Have a medium modern mushroom pizza then ride back. It’s my perfect day. Thankyou for sharing

Also, if you're gonna hit up the museum, you could also side-trek to Atticus. Their bread is great, and the bookstore is reminiscent of a trendy coffee shop near NYU.

If you ever go to New Haven again be sure to stop at Zuppardi’s in West Haven, especially for their home made sausage and especially their clam pizza!

Now that’s my kind of pizza! A charred thin crust! I’m also very fond of non red sauce pizza’s.

When I lived there, slightly over 50 years ago, the general reputation was that Sally's was best for clam apizza, and Pepe's and Modern were about even for everything else. Some people preferred The Spot (not mentioned; are they still around?). It was pretty much accepted that you really couldn't go wrong anywhere. I'm glad to see that they restored the train station. Later on, Frank Pepe's opened branches in places such as Waterbury and Yonkers. There is debate about the quality of the branches, but Pepe's in Yonkers is just fine for me. My shame that I've never been to Modern.

This place was my neighborhood pizza place growing up. Italian food was still considered to an exotic cuisine by my parents So we didn’t go as often as I would have liked when I was young. Very good pizza. Pizza place decor. Just what you’d expect.

What a relaxing day trip! I’d love to be able to travel by train to other locations. As a TX resident, I’m completely dependent on the car. Their infrastructure doesn’t allow for anything BUT car travel 😩

When I was younger, a good friend of mine moved from NYC up to New Haven, so I spent a lot of time up there. It was my first time having a "mashed potato" pizza! They have a great pizza culture up there. Thanks for another great review!

I was blown away when I tasted the pizza at Frank Peppe. I was then blown away even more when I visited Sally's. Modern Apizza seems to be a bit heavier, def seems to have more cheese. I think you would have "easily" polished a pie that size at either Peppe's or Sally's. It also does not seem to have the patina of the other two. Regardless, looking forward to visiting.

Have you been to first burger place in country Louis? I just went to Golden Diner in Chinatown best bacon egg sandwich in city they put a hashbrown on it. Get there when they open at 10 no reservations on weekends

I like Frank Pepes the most because I think the line moves faster than Sally's. I also prefer the interior of Frank Pepes because it feels more spacious than Sallys.

Sally's and Pepe's are both good... havent had Modern yet but I have to say it looks better than both of the others. You should go try Johnny's in Mount Vernon. That one holds up to all this New Haven stuff in a similar style.

My home town! My favorite pizza place in the world - and I grew up going to the Peabody Museum. I've had pizza at Pepe's, Solly's, and Regina in Boston. Modern is the best of the best.

New Haven really is one of the best little cities in the country.

Modern Apizza is my favorite place to go in New Haven. The Italian Bomb has some of the best toppings you can put on a pizza.

If you like a thin pizza you have to try BAR, it’s my personal number 2 in new haven, after Sally’s ofc

Agree, Modern is the best. I prefer ordering small pies with one topping or none.(always try plain pie first to be sure you like the crust and sauce) My Favorite is sausage and onion .Personally pepperoni overpowers pizza for me and I never order it!!

Great presentation. Who, if any of us, do not enjoy a good pizza. Your video reminded me of “Artichoke Basille’s Pizza” in Chelsea. It was once my go to place when I lived in mid-town East Side (Sutton Place). At that time nothing surpassed their quality. It was always worth the long trip to lower Manhattan. Obviously the journey downtown was always worth it. Not unlike your trip to Connecticut.

In my best weight-lifting days 20 years ago, when I was 220 pounds, I couldnt have eaten that much pizza. I think that if you trained you could probably be a decent food-challenge eater.

Modern tastes better than the rest because the dough is different- no one ever mentions that - its got a unique flavor all its own- just got to go easy on the Mozz

Yeah I don't get how someone could eat just one slice unless you ate something else earlier.

Personally my favorite place is Modern for a few factors. In terms of pure taste I think I give it to Sallys, but only by a very slight edge over Frank Pepe and Modern. Frank Pepe and Sallys both have two big problems. The first one is the cost, mainly for Sallys. The cost of a small pizza at Sallys is almost the same as a medium at Modern. Frank pepe is a bit better than Sallys but still not as good as Modern for pricing. The second is the wait time. Sallys has a smaller restaurant and it takes absolutely forever to get inside. Frank pepes there is always a giant line out the door and around the corner. There's never a good time to go. At Modern you can find many times where there's either no wait or the wait time is very small. They turn tables far faster than the other two restaurants do, and it isn't close. Add that in with the thicker crust that you touched on, and you are getting a way better experience when you go to Modern. I give the thicker crust as a benefit because it fills you up way faster, so you can get more bang for your buck. When I order a large pizza from Modern I get 3 meals out of it, and it's actually quite insane value for how high the quality the food is. A great lunch/dinner when I'm there, and two great heated up lunches throughout the week. I'd rank Modern 1st because of how much it excels at these things, while I'd put Frank pepe at 2 and Sallys at 3. Of course you can't go wrong with any of them, but when I drive in to New Haven for pizza I'm almost always doing Modern.
