Eating Czech Food : Goulash, Fried Cheese & Pilsner Beer in Prague. I have a confession to make. When I discover a restaurant I love while on the road I often return multiple times. There have been a few cases where I've come back daily and I sometimes even frequent the same place multiple times in one day!
EATING CZECH FOOD - Goulash, Fried Cheese & Pilsner Beer in Prague
Since arriving in Prague I've discovered a gem of a local pub where I can't seem to get enough of their generous portions of goulash and cheaper than water frothy Pilsner ale.
Goulash is a stew (or soup) consisting of meat, noodles, vegetables and other ingredients seasoned with paprika and other spices typically smothered in a thick gravy sauce.
The reason I'm so enamored by this particular local pub is that it is frequented almost exclusively by locals. Unlike 'tourist restaurants' nearby the old quarter, servers here speak limited English, only special English menus exist and prices are literally half or a third of what I'd pay elsewhere. I almost forget to mention that the food is undeniably delicious and the portions are generous.
The perfect complement to the Czech goulash (gulyás) is a pint of Pilsner and Czech dumplings (hovězí guláš s knedlíkem) and/or Czech bread (knedlíky) to mop up the gravy.
Pilsner, one of my favorite beers from around the world, has a golden color, light taste and high level of froth. Deriving its name from the city of Plzeň, Bohemia, Czech Republic in 1842, it is a popular beer both domestically and abroad.
I almost forgot to mention the appetizer, Czech fried cheese (Smažený sýr) usually either Hermelin or Edam breaded and fried. This was a nice salty addition to the meal that we both thoroughly enjoyed.
Overall, we enjoyed the afternoon bar patio setting with great food, local prices and a fun atmosphere. When visiting Prague be sure to check out a local pub specializing in traditional Czech cuisine.
It is a beautiful day here in Prague. We are having an early dinner outdoors in the patio. And of course, when in Prague, you have to eat Czech food. We're going to be introducing you to some new dishes.
We've found this awesome local little place right across from our apartment and we've been coming here daily.

In my hand here I've got myself a Pilsner beer. This is like an Czech institution. It is known for its golden color and high level of foam and a nice light taste. Okay. Take a drink already.
The best thing about it - it is cheaper than water and cola.
Chug. Chug. Chug.
And you know I'll be having more than one.
We got ourselves a fun little appetizer here. It is three different kinds of fried cheese and I found this on the vegetarian side of the menu. Let's taste test it.
This looks nice and creamy and it is a little green inside. It might be blue cheese. I can't tell what kind of cheese it is. It has been breaded in bread crumbs, it is nice and gooey and melt-y inside. Is it tasty? It is definitely tasty.
Let's try another.
This one over here looks like it might be brie just from judging from the insides.
Time to try it. Well? That is delicious. Deep-fried cheese, I'm a fan.
Up next we have a big plate of goulash. Now goulash is actually Hungarian but the Czech Republic does have its own variety. What differs between the two is that the Hungarian is usually served with meat, noodles and vegetables and the one from the Czech Republic only has meat, so let's dig in.
The cool thing here is you can try the goulash with either potato cakes or steamed bread. We've got the dumplings right now.
It is just such a lovely gravy here. This is honestly the best goulash I've tried anywhere. And you've been eating it here every single day for lunch and dinner right?

Samuel & Audrey that is quite interesting because even though I eat like a pig, it has never crossed my mind to pick the bread dumpling with my hand. Of course, no problem with that, eat as you want. I can understand why people could do it but it would crack me up if a person sitting next to me did it. Most foreigners prefer potato dumplings or even potato pancakes with their guláš but I am gonna tell you that real gourmets prefer simple bread dumplings. Eating potato cakes with goulash is somewhat barbaric. Don't get me wrong, I do it too but that is not the ideal gulaš. Fried cheese is also considered an entry level of Czech cuisine because even if you go the cheapest restaurants, you get your relatively standard fried cheese. it is a safe bet if you visit a place you are not familiar with. In other words, there is not much to either screw up demonstrate one's cooking qualities in frying cheese. UNLIKE THE SAUCES! Why are tasteless bread dumplings better? Because it is all about the gravy, the sauce. The Czech cuisine (as well as Hungarian or Austrian) involves a lot of sauces and tender meat, and dumplings are basically meant to just soak that sauce, not to interfere with the taste of the sauce. So using potato pancakes instead of dumplings can be intepreted as a way of concealing mediocre taste of the sauce. I am telling you - it is all about the sauce and meat and there are HUGE differences in how well you can prepare those. So if you go to restaurants meant for locals you are very smart, what you get is mostly ok but bear in mind there are big differences. For example, svíčková is considered to be a "testing" meal to judge how good cooks are. Almost everybody can prepare that sauce following a recipe but there are svičkovás which taste okeish and then there svíčkovás of heavenly nectar qualities.

Actually really cute video. Nice to see foreigners enjoying Czech food. Love it :)) - I see many people here are dehonesting the restaurant. I know this restaurant and in my opinion it's exactly as you said - traditional local restaurant. Theese kinds tends to cook on re-used oil and most of the time the food is really greavy and unhealthy, but the taste is absolutely awesome, so it's really good you tried, although i'm bit of suprised u didn't had your stomach upside down :D - The food isn't really like traditional food (which would be like dumplings,meat and cabbage) but it's like most popular food around here. Especially the fried cheese is loved by all kids and hated by all parents and food experts :D - As last i would like to point out the number of negative comments here under your video. Czech's tends to be really critic and sometimes even offensive without a prompt or even without any reason. I think it's because of a "close-minded" people, which were in absolute information embargo during the communist era, which made a lot things harder for Czech's to accept and understand. I still love Czech rep. tho :) Hope you will enjoy next time in Prague!

Samuel & Audrey Sorry man, wasn't meant to offend you. It just made me laugh, because this kind of cheese is one of the most cheap ones you can buy in Czech republic (called Eidam with 30% of fat) and because of that it is very popular mostly in the form of deep fried you had in the restaurant. But still, it is a cheap meal, but popular with potatoes and "tartar" sauce. Don't think you had something special by that. The good one is the one you called Brie (it is Czech variation of it called "Hermelin" because of the penicillin mold on the surface). Still, glad you enjoyed your stay in our country. Cheers!

The second cheese is called "Hermelín" and it's like Camembert :) The first one could be "Niva" and the third is probably "Eidam" :) And those potato things (I have no idea how to say it in English) are called "bramboráky" and I totally love them :) As everyone here says, you should try "Svíčková" :) It's made from beef with cream sauce and with dumplings. It's not my favourite meal, but lot of people like it :) I can suggest you "rajská", which is tomato sauce with beef or with meat balls served with dumplings, rice or pasat (which is my favourite variation)

This cheese you were referring to is called Hermelín. It is quite simmilar to Camembert or Brie. Your 3 cheeses were probably Niva (if that was a blue cheese, it is like Roquefort), the second Hermelín (Brie like) and the third Eidam (originaly nederlands Edam, czech mainstream food-industry cheese, tasty and good but not delicious or great).

I don't remember, unfortunately. This was a little local place in our neighbourhood, but I'm sure you can find the same foods just about anywhere in Prague. If you venture away from the touristy areas, you'll also notice that the prices drop drastically. Enjoy!
@Terinka14
@Terinka14 9 жыл бұрын
I'd say the tourist traps are really quite similar food for much more, but then again, it is also the location you are paying for... :D But you can find some really good restaurants that are fairly expensive, for czech standards but really really good - like one I went with my friend near the praque castle. I was worried it was a tourist trap but it was really nice interior and just outside the castle complex and the menu was quite gourmet - it felt to me (a czech) like czech meals with a french/fancy twist to it... :) And potato cakes - bramboraky - what most restaurants call are raw shredded potato with garlic egg and some seasonings poured like small pancakes on a pan and fried on both sides. If it were cooked, mashed and flattened it would be probably called potato patties - bramborove placky

Name of cheese used for fried cheese is Eidam (better to use 30% fat version, not to 45%). Your comment to Goulash is not correct. Hungarian Goulash is actually soup. Czech goulash is something completely different. And funny, in Czech we cook "Segedinsky goulash", named after Hungarian town Szeged. But this version is completely unknown in Hungary :D
