Solyanka is a pre-soviet type of soup. Features pickled and brine-fermented vegetables, often using up last year's winter preserves. Every household has it's own version. Kvas is a home-made "small beer" made from bread or occasionally flour. Alcohol content is usually 1% or less. Often served to children in place of lemonade, or used in soups. It tastes slightly of bread, fruit, and ranges from sweet to refreshingly tart, depending on the tastes of the brewer.

One of the greatest harms caused by the Cold War was all of the lies and propaganda on both sides. I hope the Rus-Ukr war ends soon and all of the sanctions and other nonsense are lifted. In Soviet Union it was a schoolgirls uniform actually. This whole place looks like a weird kitch which doesn't represent the actual soviet era, but does represent western stereotypes about it. We call that style "klyukva" (клюква).

You are wrong about the reason why people are nostalgic about the Soviet Union. Virtually Nobody is dreaming about the times of Lenin and Stalin, unless they are deluded. The time remembered most fondly is the Brezhnev era (1964-82). The Gulags no longer existed; The choice of goods and services was limited, but affordable for everyone, thanks to state controlled prices; people with chronic medical conditions could go to the sanatorium for free, on doctor's prescription; education and medical care was free for everyone, with free summer camps for schoolchildren; and jobs were For Life, unless the employee himself decided to leave. No wonder some people feel the lack of freedom of speech was a small price to pay for such a paradise. Not to mention that all the Soviet republics were on good terms with each other, and people could travel between them with practically no restrictions...

@@drewbarrow5670 I don't have Cyrillic font on this computer so I'm replying in English: - Did you know that Hitler visited the USSR in the 1930s? He was so impressed with Stalin's labour camp system, he used them as a model for his concentration camps! How many people were tortured in Brezhnev's time? Zero! - "Putler" as you call him, is Stalin's biggest fan! And a BFF of North Korea. Apparently, there's also a statue to Ivan Grozny erected somewhere... It would have been strange if he Hadn't done all in his (unlimited) power to "rehabilitate" a mass murderer and lie about the true extent of his crimes. As if industrialization is more important than human lives. - Want an example of True freedom of speech? Remember Gorbachev and Yeltsin...

@@drewbarrow5670 You're right. Everything they say is false, just western anti-communist propaganda. Soviet people wouldn't miss Stalin if he had killed such millions of their own numbers or done such atrocities western history says. Here in Chile our people doesn't miss Pinochet, in fact, the few ones who do are looked at with contempt and ridiculed. While Pinochet killed quite a few thousands of chileans, far less in comparison to the supposed millions (a lie) of soviets killed by Stalin, that's just enough for us to hate him. We don't paint Pinochet in buses or walls, we don't have Pinochet themed restaurants or statues, and certainly we aren't fond to remember him. The former soviet people knows very well why they are fond of Stalin, they know the truth and who he really was; everything outsiders say or repeat from western media is just rubbish.

What i've noticed is that the sense of better times, under the USSR, is mostly a sentiment in central Asia with fewer resources and that were very isolated from the west etc. but say the baltic countries, the sentiment is very different, since people knew what they were missing so resented it then and now, and now that they have those things they feel atleast better in those parts.

As an American I am not surprised the older generation looks back on the Soviet era with fond memories. In the U.S. many people still romanticise the 1950's for its prosperity. Of course this was also during Jim Crow law where African Americans were routinely lynched in the south, persecuted by the state, and completely segregated. In the 1960's women couldn't own a credit card or get birth control without a husbands consent. Everyone likes the good old days no mater how bad those days really were for many people.
I think you`re more right. We have a joke here (probably every culture have the same): Grandpa was asked by grandson why he thinks stalins time was better: because of stability and great political power, for sure? "Mmm, actually the main reson: in stalins era my dick was much harder... "
