Practice Delmar Sept 26, 2013, VKA vintage karting event. Testing recently completed highly modified AH-82 Power Prouducts (Techumseh today) 1960 era kart racing motor. Dual Tillotson carburetors with pyramid reeds, custom cylinder head, Mega-fire ignition module, ported, tie bar system to contain head, cylinder and crankcase. Kart is a 1960 Fox Go-Boy racing kart. Engine is about 140cc , estimated 15hp at 7,000rpm. Easily passing McCulloch and West Bend vintage kart engines during practice ... but then the cylinder liner fatigued and broke out around the transfer ports, the end of a great ride .. back to the shop.
VKA vintage karting event held Sept 27-28, 2013. Track: 61 KARTWAY located at 1580 Old Highway 61, Delmar, Iowa.

My father and I ran a stock Power Products engine in 1961 and it couldn't match a McCulloch... not even close. We switched to a Mc-5 and suddenly became competitive. Mc Cullochs were the winning engine in 1961-62 when I raced in Southern California.

When I was 14 in 1965, I had Power Products, McCulloch, and West Bend engines. Some of the guys from back then are still working with wrenches. My modified Mac 6 was the fastest.

Nice video! I wish my dad was here to see this. He used to race a Power Product in the mid 60 when he was in his teens. He always said it would give the Mac's and West Bends fits when it ran! I think part of that was because he only weighed about 90 pounds back then. lol.

Cool vid, too bad on the fatigue. The King Kart you passed was powered with a Mc49, driven by Rick Magnuson.

My AH82 did the same thing. Also, bolts were always coming out. As a kid, I didn't know about LocTite.

Power Product, like the others won races. The Karts raced in classes and were more or less evenly matched so the best driver won most of the time

How did the liner break? Was it bored out? I have a 5hp tecumseh off an air cooled outboard (I think it's the same engine family), it has 2 round transfers on each side and 3 round exhaust ports. Wondering if it could get too hot and cause the bridges between all the ports to expand and bulge inwards.

You could hear the cylinder going as it deteriorated while the engine's power disappeared.

This PP has BALLS! Too bad on the cylinder issue, but it was making big power! I collect and restore old open flywheel PP mower and industrial engines--these things always fascinated me! The crude cooling system, 1 HP that will kick a 6 HP 4 stroke mower's ASS, and the wide variety of flywheels, magnetos, stamped steel cooling fans, fin designs, etc etc. I have even seen factory stock mowers with NO cooling fan fitted at all! Just an open flywheel magneto and "free air" cooling! The fins were so large and deep, and, being oriented vertically when the cylinder is horizontal, as on vertical shaft engines and a few "lay down" cylinder horizontal shaft engines (like your kart engine), they had good natural convection cooling anyway. In fact, most of the stamped steel "fans" merely blew on the BASE of the cylinder, leaving the hottest part, the head and top end of the jug, to be free air cooled anyway! Beside this, they were really good performers, even stock. I want to do a horizontal shaft, horizontal cylinder free-air cooled engine for old engine shows! Maybe a vertical shaft version of this cooling system layout in the future. I have 2 1946 vertical shaft models, one restored and running sweet, with the early "cylinder" shaped small diameter heavy gauge steel fan and rare early type stamped steel starter pulley, instead of the later cast aluminum pulley. One is stuck, and in need of major restoration, but it will be worth it to get it freed up and running again. Power products 2 strokes are the most under appreciated engines around, but I appreciate them and love them! The first Lawn-Boy had a Canadian-built PP engine with a Maytag-style flywheel and fan assembly! Keep that PP buzzin! Rick Delair.

ricksbulbs soon I will upload a video showing how this engine was modified, sounds like you will enjoy that ... many hours of work went into this project ... I put it on the back shelf, but plan to install a quality cylinder liner this Summer and take it back out for more fun. I have driven many types / models of kart engines, only this AH-82 has strong low rpm torque, it really is a very different feel, sound and ride, well worth experiencing.

why is he playing with the throttle like that ? is he trying to wear out the butterfly shaft in the carb ?

John Wells because 2 strokes are oiled by the fuel/oil mixture. If youre not blipping the throttle after a hard pull, theres little/no oil getting in there to help cool and lubricate so itll seize the engine

because that is how they raced these motors in the 50's (its a vintage kart).. tuned exhaust systems came several years later to karting, after hydroplane racers pioneered the technology
