Day 9 in South Korea was proving to be yet another whirlwind, as my boy Sam and I headed out to a restaurant in Daegu to get some spicy Korean barbecue! Come along with us as we enjoy an amazing meal of Korean braised short ribs!

We started in a neighborhood where there are lots of restaurants selling a spicy beef rib dish called Jim Galbi. There are 12 restaurants there that sell it, so the street was actually renamed Jim Galbi street!
We explored Bangcheon Market. It was a little dead because it was a Wednesday, but the market is very famous for a musician named Kim Kwang-suk. There’s a road, statues, and murals for him in the area.
Every street that goes toward the street with murals has a guitar painted on the ground. The area is very artsy and colorful! Kim Kwang-suk street is 350 meters long. There are lots of arcade games, souvenir shops, and more along it!
There was a game where you can shoot a gun to knock stuffed animals off a wall. I wanted to win some for my daughter! I hit three of them but didn’t get it. But Sam won a PacMan for me! We double-teamed it to better our chances! The woman at the booth was so nice and helped us out by moving the stuffed animals back. We wound up also winning a Squirtle!
Then we continued down the street and reached the statue of Kim Kwang-suk. There were some buskers playing nearby. We headed inside a bar to get some Korean craft beers. We headed up to the roof and got two beers: a Jeju Pellong Ale and Jeju Wit Ale.
The wit ale was really great. Then I tried the Pellong ale, which was super cold and like a pale ale. It was like an IPA and really light. It was very crafty. I loved it!
Then, we jumped in a cab and headed to the restaurant. It took us a while because of the language barrier. But we got there, went inside, took our shoes off, and sat at a traditional table.
Our food arrived, along with lots of sides. Sam went with a Cass and I had a Soju. It wasn’t bad! It was so smooth!
Our spread included glazed peanuts, garlic and pepper, white radish soup, seaweed, cabbage, soybean soup with vegetables, cabbage with mayo and raisins and carrots, onions and chilies, and glazed fish, along with the jim galbi, which you can eat alone or wrapped in lettuce and different herbs.
I started with the peanuts, which were nice and felt like they were dipped in honey. The pepper was super hot! The white radish was ice cold, moist, and crunchy, but didn’t have much flavor.
The seaweed with sesame seeds tasted like it came straight from the sea and was really yummy. The cabbage salad with mayo was almost like a Caesar salad and was good. The sauce was so good and the glazed fish was salty and very spicy! It was hotter than the pepper!
Next was the soybean soup with beef and veggies. The beef was tender and I loved the mushrooms in it! The jim galbi was last and was super tender like hot pot beef. It wasn’t that spicy but was so good! Then I wrapped some in lettuce. It was the best beef I’ve had! It was next level beef! I tried it in another, aromatic leaf that went really well with the beef!
The spice from the peppers and fish was really hitting me hard, so I took a break while Sam tried the jim galbi.
After our meal, we met the owner. Then, we had 35 minutes to catch our KTX bullet train to Busan at Dongdaegu Station. We headed to our track to wait, which is something you can’t do in China. We watched the other bullet trains pull in and depart. It was awesome to see them!
We rode economy. It was a smooth, relaxing, 50-minute ride. What a day in Daegu!
