Venturing away from our apartment in Recoleta we visited one of the most famous steakhouses in Buenos Aires (Don Julio) located in the heart of upscale Palermo. Come find out what it is like to experience a fancy dining experience in Buenos Aires with a slice of tenderloin steak, Malbec wine, grilled vegetables and bread.

So we've ventured away from our neighborhood for today's food video. We are currently in Palermo. And we're eating at a place called Don Julio. This is a parrilla which means they focus on grilled meats. And it is a bit more upscale than the one we normally go to over in Recoleta. So it should be an interesting experience.

Esta bien.
So let's just take a minute to talk about the tablecloth. Yeah, so the first thing we noticed was just how like thick and durable. Like this is leather cowhide. Also, it is cool just the way that the sauces are presented here. We've got chimmichurri, we have the salsa and then over here the butter.
And show us that steak knife. Oh, yeah, this thing. This thing is incredible. This is actually heavy. I've never had any kind of knife that has felt as solid in my hands. Yeah, you can buy them at the restaurant but they're like 800 Pesos. It feels more like a dagger. It is a weapon. It is a weapon.
So we've got some bread fresh out of the oven. Look at that. I wonder if they make it here themselves because this thing is like piping hot. Ooh.
A nice way to start the meal. I just blew crumbs across the table.
Alright, so time to put the knife to good use. I'm cutting in to the bife de lomo. And this is our tenderloin which is nice and juicy. They way I like it.
Mmmmm.
Oh, wow. Honestly, that just melts in your mouth. That is probably the most tender tenderloin we've had to date in Argentina. I'd have to say. But let's add some chimichurri. Don't forget the chimmichurri. Can't forget that.
Let's see. Oh, lots of chimichurri there.
That's going to be nice and garlic-y. Flavorful.
Mmmmm.
Look at that piece of meat.
I love how easy that knife just penetrates the meat. It is just so tender. It is like cutting through butter. It is like cutting through butter with that knife.
Oh yeah. That's a nice piece of meat. Yeah, I can totally see why it is so highly rated. Now we know why it is popular.
So this is our first time having grilled veggies with steak. What do you think? Yeah, I think I may even prefer it to salad. It is just juicier and I don't know it just brings out the flavors more when they're grilled. Especially the zucchini. It's awesome stuff.
Alright, so we just finished up that meal. How are you feeling? Yeah, it was really good quality steak that is for sure. The portion was quite a bit smaller than what we had at Parrilla Pena though. And to be perfectly honest I prefer the taste at Parrilla Pena as well too. Okay, and what about the price? The price was over 700 Pesos. So this was not a cheap meal. I think we were looking at something over 50 US dollars total for the meal. But you know we are in a fancier neighborhood. Yeah. And this place is really popular with tourists. Yes. So we kind of have that coming. It is a very touristy restaurant. Yeah. But I prefer the neighborhood feel of say a local parrilla compared to somewhere like this. This was a cool experience because this was kind of our first time at a more upscale kind of grill. Fancy spot. But I definitely prefer Parrilla Pena. That is still my all-time favorite spot to get a good steak in Buenos Aires.

El problema no son los precios, el problema es que ganas demasiado poco y a ese respecto hay que hacer algo, tal vez trabajar más o ser más productivo o a lo mejor informarse más sobre los gobernantes, yo creo que por ahí va la cosa, me explico?

Palermo is the Beverly Hills of Argentina for that reason is very expensive. The knife was heavy because they are forged, it is the traditional knife of the gaucho and they usually give a gift on Father's Day on the day of the friend. :)

It's March 2021, about 11 months after this video was posted. Yes, Don Julio is touristy, in a high rent neighborhood & with higher than average prices for BA. I appreciated your honesty at the end of the video! The lomo looked small! A bad choice @ Don Julio's because it's more expensive than the beef de chorizo, tiro de asado or entraña & not the BEST lomo in BA, regardless of price! I also noticed that you did not order french fries? Why? The roasted vegetables you can make at home I'm not familiar with Parrilla Pena. I normally stay in San Telmo Monserrat neighborhood. Hierro Parrilla in the ST market is good, casual, no-waiting, reasonably priced, with a big selection of meat cuts.

+Paul Lunn Oh I was just saying that there are better and less expensive places, in fact there are some that you pay 20 usd and can eat as much as you want and whatever you want and you only have to pay extra for drink. The place they were at in the video is in a fancy expensive neighborghood

Hi Sameul and Audrey. Do recommend staying in Palermo for the first time staying in BA? Not really a party guy. Want to experience the amazing foods, see the sites, watch tango (maybe take a lesson) etc. Thanks for you videos!

Hi there, I just looked at the new 2020 list of the top three restaurants in latina american and this restaurant just placed first. 2nd and 3rd being Peruvian restaurants. I'm genuinely curious about what advantages this restaurant has to place so high. Was the food that great? It sorta just looks like a well seasoned steak that's not too far from what I see from other Argentine restaurants or steakhouses. Any thoughts you can share on that (thanks for all your videos btw)

It wasn't one of our favorites to be honest. We found the portions small compared to other steakhouses.

Audrey! tu castellano es PERFECTO, lo pronunciás neutro. Dijiste que viviste en Córdoba cuando eras chiquita, pero sabés hablar el castellano porteño? como por ejemplo: posho a la parrisha? ajajaj Me gusta mucho sus videos porque tienen puntos distintos en opinar y se complementan perfectamente. Algo bueno que dijo tu esposo -si es que lo interpreté bien- como que le gustaba más estar en lugares comunes de un porteño que sitios turísticos para comer. Esa forma que tiene él de pensar, creo que te hace saber un poco mejor del lugar que conocés. Saludos y muy buen retorno a Canadá! Hasta la próxima!

+Raúl ARAC Gracias! Mi padre es de Buenos Aires asi que creo que el acento porteño se me a pegado mas. Cuando era chiquita y vivia en Cordoba, mi acento Cordobes era mucho mas fuerte, jajaja. Y si, nos gusta comer en sitios mas locales que turísticos - los precios son mas bajos, sirven platos auténticos, y la comida siempre es excelente!

Audrey no te tomaste el vino ese justamente es de los que te gustan a vos. Mira Don Julio es una gran parrilla, pero sabes una cosa Audrey en la Parrilla Peña se come mejor y ES MAS BARATO. Bueno es experiencia de viajero.-

That's a reasonable point but at the same time it is also relatively expensive for even Argentina. Most meals we're having now that we're back visiting again fall roughly between $25 to 30 USD.
