Psychotria nervosa, Wild Coffee, does not have caffeine but the fruit is edible. Here we take a look at the more common variety.

I'm in The Florida Native Plant Society and in charge of all the landscaping at my 26 acre condo complex in St. Pete. Wild coffee is a Florida native and for some reason our grounds are absolutely loaded with the soft leaf vareity, sylvestris I believe, and the only little nervosa we have I had to collect the seeds and scatter. The seeds from the nervosa are about twice the size and much plumper.

I did not know that the wild coffee berries were edible! I always see the birds eating them in my yard. Much appreciation from Miami, FL!

OMG! I just received your book "Eat the Weeds" yesterday, I am in Central Florida and I thought I read somewhere that you are now living in Central Florida. But I cannot find where I read that... I am very intrigued with the book, it is, by far the best made book I've ever seen. OF COURSE for the INFORMATION! And the book itself is such high quality. Anyway, I am starting this journey now at age 69. I am planting 2 Moringa trees in my backyard. Thank you for providing us with such wonderful information. You have truly been God sent. Thank you again, Joy

Dear Green Deane Super interesting. Are these related to the California Coffeeberry too? Rhamnus californica, also named Frangula californica. Their leaves ARE somewhat similar, though R californica are much smaller. Some have said these berries taste like coffee when roasted. Not sure of their edibility… perhaps local native Americans used them…🤔 Thanks 🙏

At first glance they look a lot like Gardenias! Someone who’s inexperienced might not be able to tell the difference when they’re not fruiting.

all of your videos are great. awhile back, i was exploring these two native wild coffees (tampa) and the possible amer-indian relationship to it, as you know viridis in s. america etc. but anyways, here is something weird...drying out the leaves and smoking them caused a strange dizzy head rush and i verified it on my drummer at the time. i could not figure out if it has alkaloids or something and i don't believe it was used by indians in any shamanic stuff (wild coffee that is)

Are you in or near Florida? I'm in North Central Florida, & interested in what weeds are edible, in my area. I believe that hard times are coming, even though, I hope they don't. You have a new sub, & I look forward to learning more about plants, edible or medicinal. It's all so interesting.

this plant grows around my yard but I have never seen it make fruit. Reminds me of the muscadyne grape vine that makes some kind of flowers but never ever produces grapes. Is there male and female plants?
@patrickharris46412 жыл бұрын
Yes many fruiting plants have male and female plants and in less dense populations pollination won’t always occur, happens with muscadines and pawpaws far more often than not in the south
