Wow, that undercoat of Warp Lightning followed by careful brush control of Dark Angles Green has amaaaaazing results. At a glance, it looks almost like an airbrushed transition. Honestly you could stop right there (for the green) and it would be a pretty fantastic method for batch painting troops to a better than tabletop standard.

It's straight out of the pot, if you are having problems with flow, add a drop of medium to about 3 drops of Contrast, that will help you with flow

I've watched a lot of tutorials recently but this may be may favourite outcome ever... However, I loved the way the armour looked after just the two first thin green coats. I've been looking for a somewhat less extreme way of painting them than the norm with the extreme highlighting and I think your first two steps (maybe the first highlights as well) delivered exactly that. Thanks!

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures so I checked out that video too (I assume the one where youre painting the marine red) and there you talk about putting it on thick whereas in this video, you talk about puttinng on the warp lightning and dark angels green more thinly. Would you say the advice has changed, or is the thin designed for these color paints, and the thick in the other video is meant for that red? Also, aside from using a wet pallet, are you thinning your paints any further, or just taking them out of the pot/dropper to pallet? Thanks for these videos and your help!

Just ordered some dark angels contrast and warp lightning to give this method a shot. I’m not actually going for a full ‘Eavy Metal style as actually don’t like the look *that* much edge highlighting on my models (or actually doing the edge highlighting lol), but that DA contrast over Warp Lightning actually looks like it has a pretty nice “natural” highlight that I could probably get away with just a little edge highlighting on top of and still look somewhere between “battle ready” and “parade ready”

Great work as usual :D. I'm thinking to paint my Indomitus Marines in the colours of Dark Angels. What did you use to thin down the contrasts? Contrast medium or just pure water drops?

If nothing it's said, they are straight from the pot. For example in the Bone Armour parts it should say Skeleton Horde + Contrast Medium

I love this paint job, I went to my local games workshop and they only had wraithbone primer spray. I was told it would be just as good as corax if not better. My question is will my model still turn out like yours

Not exactly the same. It will be a bit darker and warmer. That being said the difference might be very subtle once you have all the highlights done

This tutorial series is just amazing, I can't thank you enough for all the information that you have shared. :) Is there is a chance for you to take a step further and succumb to the dark part of the 40k universe? ;) Maybe even make it not in 'EAVY style but in grim and dark tones... but with Contrast paints. :P

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Totally understandable and just can't wait for the next video. :) Also, how do you come up with all these recipes for colors, I mean, do you test it on something before applying to the model? I am asking because I am constantly finding myself in a though process of how to mix and how to layer colors to the desired tone or effect but in most cases, it just stays in my head because I am too afraid to ruin the model.

With two green marine chapters out of the way, I notice you are putting down another colour over the primer/base coat - what would you suggest under Militarum Green for a Raptors colour scheme? (Wraithbone totally doesn't work)

You will have to custom mix a colour that matches, sorry there's no easy solution.

Use a large brush, most people have problems because they use a tiny Brush. Try to cover the whole panel or section in one brushtroke if possible or in as less as possible. Have a lot of paint in the brush, don't be afraid to use more paint than you think you need, it's better to absorb it later than to not have enough.

Hey Juan, I'm trying to get Warpstone Glow and Moot Green to the consistency you have here and it may be the heat, but I can't get it. What ratio have you used (if you remember)

There are no ratios, you need to do it by feel. Watch my video on how to thin paints and you will see why that doesn't make sense. EVEN if I gave you a ratio, my paints are pre-thinned from transferring them to droppers so that number would be meaningless. Also different batches of pains have different consistencies, especially if they are old and have been for a while on the shelves.

A lot of dark angels videos I have seen have you base it black first and then do the contrasts. How would basing black affect the model if this video is followed? Would the overall tone just be darker?

You cannot apply Contrast over a black primer. Contrast paints are transparent, they work by tinting the underlayer so they need a lighter colour than their own underneath to work. If you want to start with black then Contrast Paints are not the way to go, just do a layer of Caliban Green and Highlight from there.

Yes, practice 😂 I mean there's no secrets, a good brush and thinned down paint. Don't forget you can always use green colour to correct and perfect the shape

Osu compadre, ojala hubiera visto esto cuando le pinte a un colega un mini de DA. Tengo una pregunta, que haces cuando haces un error? como corriges el color cuando usas contrast paints para la base? Cuando he usado contrast paints me cuesta mucho arreglar el fallo.

Y ese amigo mío es el principal problema con las Contrast. Corregir errores se vuelve todo un reto y en algunas ocasiones casi imposible. Suelo mezclar el tono que necesito usando pinturas normales, pero no es fácil a veces

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Bueno, me alegra saber que no soy el unico. No tengo el peaso arte que tienes tu con el pincel, asi que cometer errores es algo bastante comun cuando pinto con contrast :( Me estoy viendo todos tus videos ahora, menuda maravilla!

Yes that was my mistake, it's a contrast paint so it can only be Warp Lightning.

What does ‘Eavy mean? I see it everywhere in this hobby but I can’t find where it is defined or the words origin. Is it a self proclaimed title or style by Games Workshop to sound cool? Or is it a formal style of art taught in school?

The Eavy Metal Team is the name of the team of painters that paint the GW miniatures for the boxart.

'Eavy, as in Heavy Metal, but with a British accent dropping the H. The music was popular in the 80's, and early GW games had heavy metal influences in the art style. There was even a band that wrote 40k-themed rock songs. Also, the early minis were made of metal. Given the British love of wordplay, the painting team Juan mentioned took their name from combining the two.

Great job man, what brush do you use with the contrast paint? I can never seem to apply contrast smoothly!

It's an old Windsor and Newton Series 7, size 1 believe. Try loading up the brush more and apply more contrast to the surface, section by section. Then clean the brush and absorb the excess. Having more paint will make it easier for it to settle smooth as gravity will do its job better.

Are you using the normal GW medium or contrast medium with Black Templar instead of Nuln Oil?

Contrast Medium, I think I actually say that but maybe I forgot. When I do the Metallics it's usually the end of the paintjob and I'm tired and thinking about finishing it as quickly as possible

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you for the answer. Maybe I just didn't listen good enough. Your tutorials are awesome... Will you paint Ultramarines, too? It's the chapter I'm painting but I couldn't figure out a good way to paint with Contrast. It isn't neat enough for a eavy metal look.

I agree with the Matt ceramite, but I think the gloss is supposed to come from the paint used over it. Legion era Dark Angels are described as having a really high gloss black armour. Just my thoughts on it anyway

Only synthetic brushes curl, I use Kolinsky brushes

No, straight out of the pot. If for some reason you find it too strong do a 2:1 mix of DA Green and Contrast Medium. That should help you

Algun consejo para un resultado tan uniforme? A mi se me forman como manchas en medio de las superficies planas

Una de dos, carga más el pincel, cuanta más pintura hay sobre la superficie más efecto hace la gravedad que es la suaviza las capas. Una vez que la capa sea uniforme absorbe el exceso. Otra solución puede ser como aplicas la pintura, asegúrate de que el movimiento es de arriba a abajo, acabando la pincelada donde quieres más pigmento. Al final es cuestión de ir sección por sección, poco a poco, no hagas mucha armadura de un tirón y vigila esa sección. Si vez zonas donde se concentra pintura que no son deseadas absorbelas rápido con un pincel limpio antes de que empiece a secar. Espero que te ayude!

Sorry, there won't be a Black Templar video because there is already a video on how to paint Black, just use the Raven Guard one for the armour and you can use the How to Paint Bone Armour for the white details.
