Backhand Topspin - eBaTT table tennis Tutorial P2 July '19 (Development tips to enhance your backhand topspin)
The Exercise:
Develop more spin and kick on your backhand topspin stroke. You can
practice some of the tips by yourself and the other elements with sparring partners or a coach.
Tip 1: Ball and bat and location of contact, to develop this you can use various methods, 1 focus on feeling the ball connecting with the bat. 2. buy a new box of balls and leave the powder on the balls, to allow yourself visual analysis after a few backhand topspins (youll see the marks on the rubber).
Tip 2. Rotating the wrist to inject more speed and spin, this needs to be implemented by holding your forehand (restricting movement) and using the wrist only. Initially this is to develop wrist movement and technique, alongside the motion required, then you can go back to using both your forearm and wrist together.
tip 3. Relaxed arm too firm but not stiff or tense throughout the motion. throwing a card or frisbee is a great tool to use.
The Aim:
Produce spin, speed, and control over time.

Eli, a side note, I agree with you about folks leaving dislikes. If you don’t agree with something either just say you don’t agree and/or just move on. What benefit for either of you to click dislike? Most likely, if you don’t like a video then you simple won’t come back anyway. I only dislike videos that I feel are obnoxious or negative in some way.

Hey Eli, Great vid! A question..... We've got a kid in the club with great potential, and he tries to hit his backhands exactly like this. We he lands them, they're great, however, he is very erratic, control is poor as a result of the big wrist action. Should we persevere, or would it be better to reduce the amount of wrist action to begin with? Cheers.

How high should the elbow be? Should it be higher up than the wrist, like in the banana flick videos? Or does that depend on how much backspin the ball has? ALso, how far should you flick your wrist? Only 180 degrees or so? Thanks.

Hi Eli. Interesting tips. I actually don't like tip #1 for intermediate players of my level (I'm abt 1525 USATT, though ratings has slipped under 1500 recently as I modify certain aspects of my game). It's best for people like me to aim for hitting the ball at the middle of the racket. If people of my lvl or under try to hit the ball where you stated, we'd miss the ball entirely and hit air 50% of the time, lol. HOWEVER, certainly people of around 1700 or higher could try what you recommend. Heck, I'll try next time I play at the club. But for a solid, more secure hit, I'd say hit in the middle of the racket no matter what shot you do. The other tips I agree with according to my level. And hey, maybe if you coached me 1-on-1 you'd give me tip #1 and my BH would be strong. You never know. Technical advice: I'm a video producer. I see you have a wireless mic on your shirt. It looks awkward. If I were the video guy, I'd prefer using a lav mic if I were to show it outside of your shirt, and clipping the transmitter on your shorts at waist level. Or, for next video, clip that mic on the inside of your shirt so that we only see the clip and not the actual mic.

It's pretty odd how the human brain can change the location of the ball contact point. I'm right around your level too and I tend to hit the same spot on my backhand these days, I even was able to move it down an inch so I wouldn't hit air as much. I am an improving player tho..slowly improving. So slowly.

Hi Coach, for me IT is quite difficult to find the right technique for the backhand topspin. Especially the opening from heavy to normal backspin. I really would like to know how i should practise to make it as naturel as the forhand topspin on backspin. I want to be able to attack from both sides to be more inpredictable for my opponent. Is it just doing and doing and doing? An example for a naturel looking backhand topspin is Timo boll or Matthias Falck. Also liam pitchford. Can you make a Video for this issue I am struggeling with?
