Hornby actually added pickups to the front bogie in later versions . You might find that easier than the tender . 1972 figures because that was the point Tri-ang had gone bust and was bought by Dunbee Combex Marx . They didn’t buy the Tri-ang name which is why it became Hornby Railways . Anyway long story short that’s why the outer sleeve is a utility grey colour and not a red box . A nice looking model

Pretty good find! I know that Hornby made a more revamped version with seperate handrails and the front bogie had pickups, but I imagine that's rare

Very nice looking! I used to have Lord of the Isles about that age. Same chassis. From memory it had big Magnadesion magnet behind both single driver & trailing wheel so flopped forward a bit on non steel track. May need to lightly spring front bogie.

The cally is a great wee loco and you got it at good price a lot less than I paid for mine, one thing I found was the collection plate can be very brittle, looking forward to see running around your layout.

ESU 50707 and some extra wire would assist in improving current pick up if the wheel flanges are conductive.

Looks a great find and should run well after a good service. I have an old Triang GWR Lord of the Isles which I believe is the same chassis and motor? Runs well, especially considering its age. Yes feels a bit front heavy but doesn’t cause issues when running. Will be a bit stop/start on points which is why I think on the recent version Hornby added pick-ups on the front bogie. Check the back to back on the wheels which cured a lot of running issues on mine.

What you could try doing is buying a replacement front truck of one the of the Hornby Single Wheelers which did have pick ups on the front truck to help improve the pick up situation. They never made one in CR Blue as far as I know but it shouldn't be too difficult to repaint them. I wouldn't recommend just buying a more modern chassis altogether since they have traction tires on the driving wheels which makes the front pony trucks haveing pick ups a necessity.

Between the driving and trailing wheels has a magnet to give extra grip when running on Tri-ang's old steel track. I stupidly removed the one in my 123 Loco and now cannot find a replacement

Hi Bill, Yes they are very front heavy. It is the same for all the 4-2-2 engine they made. It was at the time counteracted by the fact that the engines had magnadehesion to hold the wheels to the track. Unfortunately this does not work on modern nickel steel track. Very nice buy for such an old engine.

I've seen some people have removed the magnadhesion magnet to reduce the drag on the rear axle, but that makes it all the more front-heavy. I have a Lord of the Isles, so I will be interested to see what changes need to be made. (Haven't tried servicing it since buying it -- it's a pre-Bill purchase! -- but it would be lovely to get it running properly!)

nice loco when bidding on ebay i wait to the last minute see what the highest bid is if you r still interested get your bid ready and put your slightly higher bid in when the time gets down to 5 seconds i been lucky most of the time as that short time makes it difficult for someone to up there bid i can never understand people who are bidding sometime days b4 the end if i think im not willing to pay a silly price i wont bid great channel i dont care what the motor is i enjoy watching all repairs even ringfields keep them coming

I have a strict £50 limit rule on used locomotives on ebay and often less depending on condition. I bid what I think a model is worth and leave it. If I win I win if I lose I lose. There are bidding apps that will snipe for you so it's a bit of a minefield really. Sometimes you get lucky and other times people pay daft money for something.

I have the Hornby version of this, from 2009. I got it as part of the Last Single Wheeler train pack. That Hornby version does have pick-ups on all of the loco wheels, including the bogie. But then it has traction tyres on the driving wheels, so they're not going to pick up well (though they do have working pick-ups). And the bogie doesn't press that well on the rails. The tender is just like the one you have, basically doing nothing. The model does hesitate as it goes over points on my layout. You can see it in some detail on my channel: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pJaBiMSl07KZeYE.html

Cheers for that. Hornby should have gone for a tender driven option. It would have worked!

Hi Bill. Lovely looking loco. However, I'm surprised you purchased a 50 year old Triang for £50 on the well known auction site, as there are probably other Caledonians available at fairs, exhibitions and/or shops that you could have inspected before parting with your cash. I've always found that buying blind is a huge risk. Still, you're happy, so that's all that matters. P.S. Please video the servicing etc. of that loco so we can see exactly what was required. Paul. 👍

Bill. You've got a car haven't you? And if not, there's always public transport. Any excuse to stay at home. You should come south of Hadrian's Wall and see how us Sassenachs manage to get from A to B without looking for reasons not to. We're made of tougher stuff you know. 😀 Paul.

Hi Richard. Thanks for that info. Let's hope Bill reads it and takes note. However, unfortunately for me, I'm located in SE London and believe me, I'm not impressed with what my area has to offer. There's now only one model train shop within reach of me and due to its small size, is limited in stock availability. Parking in London is nigh on impossible, not to mention the extortionate charges for doing so, therefore, as a pensioner, I rely on the internet for my purchases. Have a good day mate! 👍 Paul.

Buying blind IS a risk, but (private seller) eBay prices are usually way lower than commercial dealers at model railway exhibitions. Patience is usually the key (whether buying or selling), deciding a limit price and then waiting for one to come within your grasp (at the right condition!), and bidding as much as you are prepared to pay (in the last few seconds -- you're not the only one, Keith!). You may have to wait years, but when it works... If you are hunting rarities, like I am these days, the chance of finding one at any show is vanishingly small. Recently I managed to secure a specific Lima beer tanker wagon after searching for, probably, ten years -- that's properly rare! I have bought hundreds of items through ebay, and have only been really caught out on a few occasions -- balanced out by a few purchases that have been way better than expected! But sometimes, if you want a really top condition item, you have to be prepared to pay 'top dollar' to get it. (Currently I'm trying to extend my rake of a particular bogie tanker wagon. I'd rather have unboxed, and I don't mind a bit scruffy, but my target price is £12+pp, and they usually go for £20-£40 these days. Crazy! Still looking...)
