This week on EMR I tackle the always inexpensive and super fun to paint, Lord of Plagues. These models almost always go for under $20 and are great for practicing a ton of different techniques. Even if you don't play AOS or even Warhammer in general, I would highly recommend picking one up to just paint.

looks great... but I don't like how everyone uses nihilakh oxide on iron/steel. It doesn't look realistic, rust isn't blue. oxidation of copper/bronze it's great for
@DMNKLR_official
@DMNKLR_official 5 жыл бұрын
That's the only thing I dislike about this one. Different metals oxidize differently, and none of them oxidize as both patina and rust. The chemical breakdowns are very different, and as you said, it doesn't look right when mixed like this.
@deviantpersona
@deviantpersona 5 жыл бұрын
@@DMNKLR_official yeah... I've only ever seen copper and bronze patina, ever... and that's just due to the copper content in bronze. and having worked with a ton of heavy equipment, I've never seen patina on rusted iron/steel. plus, I hate when people add rust to moving parts on miniatures/models like tanks and planes. if it moves like pistons, it is less likely to rust unless constantly exposed even if the rest of the machine is a rust bucket...
@DMNKLR_official
@DMNKLR_official 5 жыл бұрын
Very true. When I weather anything mechanical, I always take implied functionality levels into consideration, and use real-life examples for reference. Heavy machinery definitely gets rusty, but only on stationary components, such as steel plating, on the outside body panels, on a crane, backhoe, tank, etc. Anywhere that has lots of consistent movement will remain "clean" & polished, usually with grease and/or oil.

I really like where you went with this guy; I went more the standard GW colors route with mine and like the way he came out a lot. But did I miss a step somewhere in the video? Thanks! You didn’t miss a step, I was going to coat it with the screaming bell but decided against it, I did hit the corners, but I covered it all back up when I started the weathering. So in the end you don’t see any of it and I cut out the video of me putting some on. Good catch on that :)

@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I try and keep them sealed as best I can, but the paint builds up in the back over time. I feel alright with this for the most part because I’ve had the same GW paints for probably 3 years, I’ve had maybe 1 bottle go bad because of this in that time. I want to put them all into dropper bottles at some point because I use the airbrush quite a bit, having an easier way to dispense paint and keep them from going bad would be nice!

sorry another question, how do you know when youv'e thinned too much? having trouble finding the proper consistancy and then I put it on the model and it looks bad or maybe too thin wet, so I panic and wipe it off lol
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 5 жыл бұрын
Lol I’ve been there. It just depends on what you are trying to do. Really thin dirty paint water is great for glazing onto a mini over many thin layers in order to tint the underlying color towards the dirty paint water color. For general layering though you just want enough water mixed in so it sticks in your brush and flows onto your pallet nicely. If it’s too thin then it will break up on your pallet and you will need to add more paint. Just load up your brush and test it first, a lot of people use their hand as a test, the pallet, some paper. Each color is slightly different, so it’s something you just get used to over time. The warhammer official KZfaq channel does pretty good at demonstrating the consistency of paints in their videos. Probably the best I’ve seen for showing up close is Pete the Wargamer, his videos are also excellent :)

Well I just put out a video about this the other day :) personally I think if you’ve never airbrushed before then you should get a relatively inexpensive one and start playing with it, see what you like about it and then upgrade from there! If you can afford to drop a few hundred dollars then you should just jump to something nice, if not, there are lots of options out there :) The comment section on the video has some really good information on a lot of airbrushes, cheap and otherwise. how do you remove the model from the square base without damaging them?
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 5 жыл бұрын
It depends, if the glue isn’t so thick then they just pop off, sometimes it is really thick and you have to cut away the base entirely and start over. In this particular case, because the round base size is quite a bit larger than the square, you can get away with just putting basing materials around it to blend it in. It gives a little height to this model and the square base can still be used.

So do you buy minis, paint them then resell them? does that work well for you?
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 5 жыл бұрын
Not on a regular basis, if I get something in a lot of minis that I don’t want or need, then I’ll sell it to just get some of my money back. Overall, I don’t think it’s a very good business model, there’s too much volatility to reliably find and flip models. This is more of a special case, I own a Lord of Plagues already and I figured it would be kind of cool to have a figure in your collection that had a story to go with it. It was also to potentially help with funding these videos. I am going to sink %100 of it back into new (used eBay) models :) I do commissions occasionally, very occasionally, and that’s a much better trade for time. It’s way more stable as far as a business and you have a lot more control over the time you are spending on something. If you don’t mind, can I use a screengrab of your question in a future video? I hope that answers your question :)

@@eBayMiniatureRescues Sure go on ahead. I was just curious cause I sold a bunch of Legions of nagash painted higher than I should have because the people wanted them painted. Bit I was always told people just strip models lol
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Lol yeah that’s probably a good assumption to make, buying on eBay the plan is almost always strip it and start over. I do see some guys going for it though, painting a ton of stuff to a high standard, but for the prices they want I would just hire someone to paint it the way I wanted them to lol. Even still, you sold those minis, so money in your pocket :)

Do you ever use Citadel airbrush paints? If not, why?
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 5 жыл бұрын
I own 1 citadel air paint lol They work great, the only real issue is that GW decided to keep them in the regular paint pots instead of dropper bottles, so it’s really inconvenient to use them. If you need to color match with GW then absolutely they are the way to go, worth the extra effort, but otherwise, not so much. Hope that answers you question :)

The model had a few issues that I did fix before painting. There was excess glue everywhere that I had to sand off, mold lines, and some gaps that I filled. It wasn’t enough to show, or so I thought, a lot of people are asking this question lol. Hope that answers your question!

I started with the 7, it was meh, but the 8 and 10 have pretty nice cameras, same with the newer Samsung’s. I also shoot pretty close to my hands, so I’m not using the zoom on the camera, from there I can zoom in and retain pretty good detail. Something to try anyways, it might help without upgrading.

Good work, but how is this a rescue if it wasnt already painted?
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I probably did a disservice to myself by not showing all the things I cleaned up before I started. Whatever glue was used was all over, mold lines and sprue pieces, and I had to fill some gaps and sand everything down. It wasn’t super noticeable so I skipped it. In any case, the way I like to define rescues isn’t just by how they are painted. I look at price as well as paint. If I can get a mini for cheaper, do a little work to it, and get it painted as if it were new, I will count it as rescues from eBay. Most of the models I paint on this channel have been a used or neglected for sure, sometimes they just aren’t as bad. I hope that helps explain it a little bit :) thanks for watching!

It depends on the model, if it needs building, cleaning, that sort of thing. This model in particular would run you around $80-150 from most online commission studios. I also do commissions if you are interested, just email me and we can talk :) Ebayminirescues@gmail.com
