I think the helmets look great! Looking at them makes me think of them as a group of stormcast that were overlooked by sigmar and not put into the newer armor so they fight in sigmar's name but more to prove they're better than the newer model than out of devotion

Gotta ask what made you take a 20 year break from painting? I haven’t painted or played 40k in almost 25 years myself, however my reason was because I was burgled and lost everything and didn’t have the heart to start over again, just curious your reason ❤️

That's a huge bummer man, I'm sorry that happened to you! For me, it was the community at the time, or whatever you could call it back then. The internet was young, and I followed a few sites that would allow you to post your stuff and talk to other hobbyists. All I got from posting anything was grief about my paint jobs, never anything encouraging or uplifting. Of course, I was young, so I took it harder than I needed to and I just quit. Figured it wasn't worth being part of if all I ever heard was negativity. Even my local hobby shop where I bought stuff from pretty often seemed like they didn't care at all. They mostly specialized in scale modeling but carried a small selection of Games Workshop stuff. Limited paints and models, but it was there. Every time I went in to buy stuff the owner seemed put out. Not sure if it was because of Warhammer, or just my age, either way, not a great experience. I loved doing it of course, and at home and between friends it was great, but eventually I was the only one left painting or trying to set up a game. So when I turned to the internet that was the last straw. In that time though I really got into buying models off of early days ebay, and I still looked at listings from time to time, when AOS was about to launch something just got me and I jumped back in, haven't looked back since :)

You made Stormcast into something I absolutely love the look of, when I normally hate them. Warhammer has always been sorely missing “classic” medieval knights. Even the closest stuff in WfB I can think of was more like.. Swooshy Renaissance sleeves and fluffy feathered hats, not actual full plate gritty knights. Sooo cool. Yellow is also my favorite color, and yellow/black/brown is an amazing combo. Beautiful work. I do have to add though, the printed helmets look SO much better than the shaved head bit. I think the face on that shaved head bit is so derpy, and the shape of the head (how it slopes down and then bulbs out at the cheeks) makes it look like some goofy cartoon golem or something. The actually hidden emotionless grate of various knight helmets, in my opinion, is infinitely better. Even if it’s more work, I’d say it’s well worth it! Beautiful beautiful work. 😍

At least with Space Marines, you can assume their bulky armor is a result of being full of lots of electronics and such. You have to think the stormcast (liberators at least ) were designed at first to be a monster infantry unit for The Empire in The End of Times as golem creations made by Balthasar Gelt. That explains the inhuman proportions and the lack of leather straps the new ones have.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues Жыл бұрын
For sure, and I think they are fine from a lore perspective. My issue is more with the overall design of the plastic. Even here I gave them bigger heads and weapons to match the scale and, to me at least, that seems to fit better with the plastic we did get and it makes more sense, just some of them feel squished, like they couldn’t actually move in their own armor. The best example is how the new knight Vexilor has an open pose compared to the original who looks like he’s hanging on for dear life.

Awesome the way they turned out, a brilliant grim dark with the yellow really popping to add interest. The smoothed head is great and you should do more, but would too many together end up loosing the individuality of the way the models you’ve done currently look? Those ended up looking like something from Dark Souls, so plenty of grimdark with that warband. I myself would probably go the opposite route, try to utilize how the older Stormcast look like something a bit more cartoon-ily heroic, like Warcraft or Warp Miniatures. I see potential in using them as both paladins and evil equivalents, like death knights. That's why I would kitbash them with the 8th edition Chaos Warriors and similar models, both for helmets and weapons other than hammers.

okay so... while the new helmets do look totally wizard and are just straight up better, i do have to say it makes them look less stormcast and more just normal knights. so i guess it comes down to how much/what kind of narrative you want them to have? idk if it's still a thing but i remember there was at least one city of sigmar that let you ally in stormcast without breaking faction, so i'd use those models in that kinda army and fluff them as normal knights
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues Жыл бұрын
Yeah it definitely depends on how you would want them represented in an army. In a fully dedicated stormcast army you could still make it work, but I like the idea of combining something like this with cities of sigmar, i think you can still do that with up to 400 points of allies? So you could have a killer warband come in that's just been sent as a specialty moster hunting unit of liberators to help out the regular folks...could be pretty awesome from a narrative point of view :)

The one thing that annoys me to no end about the Stormcast models is that their alternate heads are all in the same size. The helm is not something that goes ON the head - it replaces the head, and they're both basically the same size, which is not how helms work. Some heads on the Vindictors are actually larger than the helmeted versions because of large hair and beards. But I like them a lot, as long as I don't think about that one part.

One of my favorite games, and the tattoo I have on my elbow :) I completely forgot to put the STL links in the description, but that is now fixed!! The original Stormcast are definitely a bit 'over the top', almost cartoon-y or caricature-ish, with very exaggerated shoulders, helmet crests and weapon heads. The new Stormcast miniatures are a lot more toned down, both in proportions and in the amount of detailing.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues Жыл бұрын
Probably why I like the newer ones better. They just feel more correct, if you can even say that about minis. A lot of the middle era stormcast were fixing the problems I've always had, some of those minis feel much more in between and better. The sequitors in particular are generally pretty nice.

They look great. To me though, the 'shaved down helmet' looks really, really tiny on top of that body. Like, it has a kind of a pin-head look that becomes very obvious next to the more properly scaled, 3D printed helmets.

What are the hobby shelves you use for your paints in the background? I've been meaning to get a shelf for my tools and paints and those look way better than the ones I've seen on Amazon or in hobby stores.

The main system I have is from Hobby Zone. MDF hobby desk stuff that's really nice, much better than anything off of amazon, which I have some of as well. The long white strip on the wall off to the side is actually a floating picture shelf. It's thin and has a little lip on the end to hold frames, perfect for paints :)

Yeah, they are great helmets! I did quite a few prints before I got some that felt right. I wanna say I ended up around 125% upscaled. The weapons were different, like 150, but I'm pretty sure the helmets were around the 125 mark. If I were to print them again though, I'd probably take them down a little, some of them were a little too big to fit in between the shoulder pads. More to do with the models themselves, but something to keep in mind!

Honestly the sword and shield head conversion mini would make for a better standard line troop...weapons could vary as I've no preference there...as for baldy head, 2 or 3 at most (squad leaders if you like) otherwise it would just start looking stupid...Great job blending old vs new though,.. it works with your conversions....Never got into Stormcast line at all as I thought they just looked to clownish and goofy...Taking off all that garbage heraldry really worked...if you do expand this mob maybe look at other resin shield designs to add more randomness to the troops...Even has me interested on what you come up with,.. Though I still will never get this army

These look amazing! I will say all Stormcast fixing is 90% done by giving them proper helmets or heads. The gold skintight masks with candle holders on top just plain suck. And it is the same for every soldier, in every unit, release after release. It was a horrible design choice in 2015 and it still stinks up the place to this day.
