I'm a comic book colorist from Brazil and I've recently been watching your channel while I work. Unfortunately I can't keep my guitar on my lap, but hearing you talk about music and guitar in your friendly voice makes my work lighter and more fun. That's about it, a "guitarist friend simulator" that's always there for you. Keep up the great work.

As a guitar store owner, I decided that as we're coming into Christmas it was high time I finally fulfil my dreams of owner a decent Fender amp, and treat myself to either a '68 Custom Princeton Reverb or Tonemaster '65 Deluxe Reverb. However, after watching your video, Eric, I've I hit up my Fender rep and ordered a '68 Custom Vibro Champ Reverb. 5 watts is plenty for home noodling, rehearsals, and small gigs, and worst case scenario is I can mic it up for any more raucous gigs. Eric, kudos for showing such a deep understanding - and natural talent - when it comes to evaluate a guitar amplifier. You’re very good at putting an amp through the entire range of its capabilities. I had a feeling this new Vibro Champ had the possibility to sound as good as my old ”vintage” one. And although a little different, it really does! You have a nice recording mic, but I get the impression (or I hope?) the final youtube outcome does come a long way in showing how this amp really do sound. Thanks for the demo Eric!

Tinnitus isn't always caused by loudness, but hearing loss certainly is. If you're a musician and you don't have custom-fitted, filtered earplugs, you're doing it wrong. My earplugs are -9 db, which work for me in most situations. I'm in the market for a new amp - tremolo is a must-have for me. This one's high on my list.

I've been wanting this amp since it came out. you're making me want it more. Tinnitus sucks. I have a weird form of it from photographing bands all through high school and college. Now at 40 when volume gets too loud it sounds like a kazoo in my right ear. Saw a Dr he said he could cut the muscle which is over acting but then I'd have zero natural protection to loud noise. So i deal with it. Back to the gear. Never saw the attenuator before that is neat. Just got a new guitar a few months ago maybe I can convince the Mrs to let me get this amp once they start showing up used at GeetarCntr. Cheers from Portland, Maine.

Tried one of these at a Guitar Center last week was very impressed with the tone-the amp practically disappeared and it was just me and the guitar. I went in to GC to try a PRS Hollowbody II and played through one of these. It sounded so good that I waited on the guitar and brought home the amp. I loved that little amp. Regrettably ,the reverb went wonky and defective after 2 weeks. I loved that amp. GC was great about their 45 day money back guarantee. Unfortunately there wasn’t anymore in stock locally. So I’m now the proud owner of an original ‘68 drip edge Vibro Champ. I can’t believe the reliability and how good this 55 year old amp sounds. Now I understand some of the vintage prices ,though I still think many are overvalued.I’m now seeing some of these reissues at pretty reasonable prices.

Eric, I got the amp and I replaced the tubes with JJ's all three. What I noticed is I get more gain at 5 then I did before. So, with new jj's it breaks up sooner and sounds rich and beutiful. I use the Bugara PS1 Attenuator, which works great for lower gain amps. In my little guitar room, I have to use the attenuator to really get what I want out of the amp. This should have gotten amp of the year by the mags. Cheers.

Another diamond in the rough is the old Fender Frontman series. Specifically the 25r. If you swap the speaker out for a better one, you can get some amazing sounds out of it and for pretty cheap too. I put a 10" Celestion in mine and it's just a beast. Fine for a small room. If I need bigger, I'd just mic it. I love all Fender amps though. That P90 sounds rad BTW- that would sound good for on a Pavement tune. Thinking the John Peel version of Here specifically. Great video, and thanks for all you do!

For anybody who thinks they are too tough to suffer from hearing damage, watch the movie "Sound of Metal". You';ll rethink it. I wish I was smart enough to wear hearing protection when I was young. These days, the ringing in my ear is louder than most chainsaws. Great video by the way. Love the tones of this little gem of an amp. Especially with P-90's
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
I'm terrified to watch that movie because it hits too close to home! I have significant damage at 8000hz and have been informed by my audiologist that at some point in my life I will need hearing aids. Did your ringing steadily get worse year by year, or were there events that made it jump from one level to "chainsaw" level?
@jeremythornton433
@jeremythornton433 3 жыл бұрын
@@EricHaugenGuitar It varies. I think it's just a thing that has worsened over time but not so much in the last several years. The "chainsaw level" is the worse than it ever gets and I've learned that if I take something like Tylenol or have coffee, it gets bad. At other times it's barely noticeable. I've been wearing hearing protection for many years now. I can't think of anything that actually caused it to get worse. I may have slightly exaggerated by using "chainsaw" as an example but I was also really trying to get people to learn and protect their hearing. It's important and it doesn't get better. I'm almost 66 now and I have friends who are in far worse shape than I m and refuse to wear protection. Not smart. I work in a very loud shop and the first thing I do is put in ear plugs or put on ear muffs. I think in some ways though I'm fortunate in that I figured it out right away. I get my ears tested every 2 years and for the last several, not much has changed. Fingers crossed! Protect your ears! It's the law and it's a good one!

It was between this and the Supro Keeley - got the Keeley and was totally uninspired. Found the Champ used, sold the Supro, and no regrets. Love the Champ. It records extremely well. I have the '68 Deluxe, the '68 Princeton, and the '68 Champ. Love the Deluxe and Champ, indifferent on the Princeton - also have a '65 Princeton which I prefer over the '68. Might sell the '68 Princeton . . . most likely won't . . .

I really want to hear room sound with any amp review. I'll occasionally hear a bit in this video when you're talking and playing. I think you tube is missing this room sound with their reviews. Close mic gives the idea of recording but the room sound will help viewers hear how it sounds sitting in the same room.

Well Eric, call up Fender and have them send you a commission or a six pack or something. I just ordered one based on your great demo. Was looking at this or a prri and think this one will better fit my lower volume needs. Loving your lessons and theory vids too. Very helpful stuff and you have a great laid back style. I also like that you often explain why you did something or chose a note or phrase, it adds a lot of context that my caveman brain really appreciates. But enough about me, rock on in that well lit kitchen of yours good sir.

Cool! You will not be disappointed - this is a f$*kin' cool lil' amp. And now I shall encourage you to spend a little more to get an attenuator too - such an essential tube amp tool!

Seems to be a fine & useful amp sounding very well...I have an original blackface vibro champ, but that does not have reverb on it (& needs not from my perspective). Surprised that Fender added reverb to it. Entertaining and as usual great playing, good to see you get inspirations out of new gear. Greetings from Germany.

I look forward each week for our time together. It makes me think about guitar a little different and I take away some good points. I think you are right about getting an attenuator for my tube amp. My band is medium loudness, but we have switched to an in-ear monitor. The QSC Touchmix 16. We no longer have to crank the amps to be at the audio level of the drummer, but I loose the crunch of the amp by being quiet. I'll look into the Webber. I don't really know what is important for an attenuator. I'm playing through a Peavey Classic 50 212.
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Oooh the Peavey classic series are SOLID! At 50w, you may need the bigger version of the weber the "mass." Just like with speakers, you want the attenuator to be able to handle more than the max wattage of your amp.

Have you ever tried Kingley tube preamp pedals (or other tube preamp pedals operating at actual tube voltage) going into an IR cab simulator? I have a Squire 86 from Kingsley that I run into an irdium and it sounds great for me - but I've never really played a tube amp at volume so I'm curious what you'd think of such a set up. I think it's a good option for bedroom players.
