The shuttle in Zion National Park, recently made changes that in order to ride it you need to purchase a $1 ticket/person up to two weeks in advance. I waited for when they were available and within literally 2 seconds, and refreshing the recreation.gov webpage, they were all gone!
Not having a Zion trip be stopped, we looked into renting a e-Bike from an outfitter just outside Zion, in the town of Springdale. While most places had a single rider bike available, we saw from a previous day, that an ebike option that can carry two adults, or in our case, an adult and one young kid was possible. But a quick look at outfitters only showed a 1 person bike.
After searching that night for an outfitter with the dual passenger ebike, we came across "Springdale Visitor Center" which has the two-seater e-Bikes for all-day rentals for around $150 per bike (plus a $300 refundable deposit). Sure, it's not $1 shuttle ticket, but we were all ready here in Southern Utah and wanted to take the kids to Angels Landing, along with other Zion hiking gems.
Needless-to-say, they were an excellent choice! They had a range of 50 miles and a top speed of nearly 20 mph! It felt like a motorcycle essentially. If you have the extra money, I would suggest taking an eBike into Zion. It was worth it! I am hardcore Zion junkie and visit Zion NP 3-5 times a year, even though I live more than 5 hours away. And while taking the shuttle for all of those years, taking an eBike and going at our own pace was worth the cost for this trip. No waiting for the shuttle, and those bikes also had a weight limit of 350 lbs! That's essentially two adults, or one adult and one kid. While it would be fun to keep renting eBikes, unfortunately the repetitive cost is discouraging. But once though, it was worth it.
To rent out the specific Ebikes that we had, the "Magnum Payload", visit Springdale Visitor Center at ebikerentalzio...
The specific eBikes are made from out of a local (Utah) store in downtown Salt Lake City. They have incredible prices on eBikes ranging from $1000 to $3000. That's a steal for a quality bike like these. Check out www.magnumbikes.com for all of their offerings.
(After our ride, I was seriously considering buying an ebike. Especially something like a Haibike downhile one.)
Thanks for watching!

LOL - I didn't catch the "3.1 miles roundtrip" text at the beginning. It should of said 16 miles. Sorry for the mislead!

About how long did it take for you to bike to the Grotto?
@TheDiabeticHiker
@TheDiabeticHiker 3 жыл бұрын
From the Zion Visitor Center, going full-throttle (very little pedaling), maybe 15 minutes. But if you are stopping for busy traffic, looking at the sights at a relaxed pace - it would be 30 minutes. The grotto is not too far up the canyon - maybe 5 1/2 or 6 miles up.

Your Zion NP ebikes video is great. Because of your video, we added a ride at aZion NP to our 10 day drive to Santa Barbara fromm Denver. It was epic! Thank you for posting this very accurate and helpful video.

Wow thanks! Hope it was memorable! For our family it was. The shuttle reservation is no longer needed so that part of the video could be confusing watching that...but you still beat the crowds that wait for the shuttle, and you have a lot more time to just 'listen' as you cruise on the bikes at your own pace... Im already day-dreaming of doing a repeat trip of that. Such a cool experience.

Very helpful video. I think e-bikes are definitely the way to go up the valley. 👍

After trying them for the first time here - I agree 1000% It was nearly as fast the shuttles (and didn't have to rely or wait for them), private, and more - lack of a better word - intimate, as you got to see and hear things at your own speed. Definitely the way to go next time!

If you're zipping down Pa'rus Trail don't forget to warn pedestrians w/ dogs of your approach from behind them. You could get snared by a dog lead if you don't.

I think I was there about the same time you were there. My video is dated the same day as your video. Very nice. What do use to edit your video? I used i Movie on a Mac. I had my own e-bike, a Specialized Como.

Nice! Small world that you catch this video the day you went too. Thanks! I use Cyberlink PowerDirector 19. iMovie works pretty well from what I have seen my wife's video edits. But I don't have a Mac anymore, so all of my options are PC. I just looked at that Como. Pretty nice to have that! I was looking at the Fezzari Wire Peak ebikes, but they are only a pedal-assist bike. But that was definitely a great way to explore and enjoy Zion though. If I had one, I'd use it all the time for Zion and skip the shuttle every time.

Love your video and thank you for sharing! We will be there in April and planning to bring our own bikes. By the way, is it safe to lock the bike when heading to the trail (Emerald Pool). Also, may I know which video cam are you using? Thank you!

Thanks for kind words. Yes, there will be bike racks there. They are located maybe 100+ ft from the shuttle stops. And I was using the GoPro 8 at the time, and now I have since upgraded to the GoPro 10. It's definitely the way to go, the best the shuttle, traffic, and lines! And the view is wayyy better on the bikes than by car or shuttle. Have a good time! But prepare for lots and lots and lots of people. April is a great time to go but that is when visitation dramatically picks up.

hey there - thank you! We rented them from the "Springdale Visitor Center", which is in the town of Springdale. Their website is here - ebikerentalzion.com/ And the bikes that we rented that was able to carry the kids was the "magnum" ebike. Hope that helps! Enjoy the beautiful ride in!

How bad is the incline going in? Wife is worried about it a bit (biking regular bikes with kids loaded).

Good question! So going from the Springdale Visitor Center (where we rented the ebikes) to entrance gate of Zion NP it was 1.41 miles and according to Google Earth you gain 149 feet in elevation. It was easy. Now, from the Park entrance gate to Angels Landing on a bike it is 4.9 miles (one-way) and gain 583 feet. It's easy if you have experience with any road-biking or mountain biking, but if you take it slower on the hill sections you will be okay. The hills are short in length. In fact, I remember seeing a few young kids (maybe 10 or 11 or 12 years old) riding their bikes on the road, if that gives you any reference. It all depends on how far you bike up the canyon on the road, but you are looking between a 3 mile to 12 mile round-trip ride. But riding your bike in Zion is an experience that shouldn't be missed.

I noticed that your bike was going faster than others? Wondering if these are a better choice of all the electric bikes to rent? We are going in April I'm doing my research now.
@TheDiabeticHiker
@TheDiabeticHiker Жыл бұрын
They are operated by a throttle (so, Class 2 Ebikes, i think), so you can reach over 20mins with these, without pedaling. All depends on your budget and needs. For us and the 2 young-ones it worked well. But for others they may want to peddle. Definitely do some research as bikes are changing every year! But these were very enjoyable.

Were the bikes that you rented pedal-assist or throttle, that would make a big difference? Do they offer insurance in case something happens to your bike (theft or wreck)? Can you load your bike on the shuttle and ride the shuttle to the end and just ride the bikes back? Finally, can you reserve a bike or is it first-com, first-serve. Thanks, this was a great video, we will be there in October.
@TheDiabeticHiker
@TheDiabeticHiker 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike! 1) Throttle. Yes, big difference. Essentially it’s a “motorbike” at that point, albeit quiet. Pedal-assist definitely works, especially as this is a “flat” road. 2) Yes, they offer insurance. I can’t remember rates top of my head. 3) Im not sure. I haven’t done that before and can’t recall bikes being loaded. 4) This specific place “Springdale Visitor Center” allowed us to rent the bikes the same day! That was very fortunate since the other places only took reservations. You can do reservations, however to secure one. These magnum bikes were great because it allowed a tandem rider. Other places didn’t have that option (but maybe now?). Have a good time in October! It’s going to be cold in the morning so wear a jacket then hot in the afternoon, so I would suggest bringing a backpack to carry the pack and a bunch of water bottles. Especially if you plan to do some hiking.

Zion's site says you cannot load an e-bike onto the shuttle. They probably weigh too much.

Are there many places to lock up the bikes along the way?
@TheDiabeticHiker
@TheDiabeticHiker 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, actually there is at most the popular shuttle stops. If you stop along a pull-out along the road and see a hike that you want to do, you will need to find a tree or similar to lock it too. But 'The Grotto' shuttle stop is where locked up the bikes and did Angels Landing right after. 'The Lodge' had a ton, and so did 'Temple of Sinawava'. Hope that helps.

About how long did it take to get to angels landing? And did you end up hiking it?
@TheDiabeticHiker
@TheDiabeticHiker 2 жыл бұрын
If you have been to angels landing before, and were going solo or with other riders who could keep up while going the max speed on the ebike - from the visitor center to the grotto - 20mins. If you were stopping along the way, taking pictures, looking at how beautiful and quiet it is when you are not on the shuttle, or riding with other slower riders - probably more like 40mins if not an hour. And yes we did! We parked at the Grotto, used the included locks with the bike, and took our two kids up there. Here's that video if you want to see how it went - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/feCaZZCL16nDaIk.html

Is there fee/ticket for shuttle service inside Zion I thought it’s free and first come first serve basis
@TheDiabeticHiker
@TheDiabeticHiker 2 жыл бұрын
No, not anymore. In 2021, the park required a shuttle permit but since January of this year (I think), that requirement is gone and now you don't have to pay to ride the shuttle or reserve a time. But, long lines are still prevalent unfortunately and could wait like 30-60mins to ride the initial shuttle up the canyon. That's where a ebike would skip that line altogether.
