You know, this is the mess you end up in, in you mind, when you see the world through race and identity. You completely miss reality and it really hurts your intellect, making you miss the clear contradictions.

I am not sure this interview reaches ' a way forward' . Where do we go from here? Pointing fingers is getting us nowhere! The white dominated did wrong or were self centred and arrogant and the black dominated did wrong and were also self centred. Weighing up who did the worse wrong to destroy the SA we have now is not helping!! We need to address the economy and skills and management in the public system. FAST!. Otherwise we will have not economic transformation to discuss. We have TWO choices in this election and we know who they are. There are 2 blocks! 1. The Constitutional Democracy that we hoped would guide us to improve the lives of ALL. We have not 'really' seen our Constitution work properly yet!!! It needs development around the economy too - which never happened. 2. We choose the apparently socialist/communist version of capitalism that will likely end in totalitarian rule where those in power can emulate their heroes in Russia, China and North Korea. Mr Ebrahim. I appreciate your insights. Let's get the Economic 'Codesa' under way ... ? We need to dialogue properly around these issues. Calling out race groups is not helping. BEE was 'tried'. BBBEE was 'attempted. They have results. The National Development Plan of 2012 was never tried. Instead the stealing of public money through THE PUBLIC SECTOR & SOEs through cadre deployment and very smart corruption of the procurement systems within these institutions occurred. We can all see the results. We need another way. Well meaning and greedy blacks and whites have been part of the entire system. We can blame the tragedy of APartheid. We can blame white corporates from 1994 til today. We cannot do this, however without also calling out the tragedy and lost opportunity of Black Leadership in Government (i.e. the RULERS) to build on what 'we had' at the time - like good public hospitals and electrical, water and railway infrastructure. Apartheid. 1994 Democracy & BEE. 30 years of ANC 'Democracy'. None of these systems have helped the poor to participate meaningfully in the economy and live a life of dignity. We need leadership who has a concrete plan to FIX the infrastructure. Then we need a genuine proposal to re-organise the economy with much needed INNOVATION. We cannot stay stuck in simple 'capitalism vs socialism' models. There is no pure capitalist or socialist economy in the world they are all various combinations that include both models. What we have to choose though is either constitutional democracy as our guiding light or there is totalitarian, one party state rule which guides 'everything' according to it's constitution which is possible under 'a fake democracy' wherein fair elections is simply theatrics. Leaders sat down at CODESA in the 90's. We need another URGENT DIALOGUE about the economy. It cannot remain a pyramid shape - cause nothing is trickling down to the poor! Get the adults - from all races - into the room and let's sort this out!! It will require calm headed leaders to mediate. It will need all ego's to be put aside. It will need the smartest people to present viable options to meet ALL requirements. We have to work with facts and not 'ideologies'. Nothing is clear cut in our crazy world. But we need the best possible and 'peaceful' solution to take us forward. We have to try again until something works. It will require more than just politics! Let's negotiate 'THE SA ECONOMY'. The current version of 'free market capitalism' is not working for ALL and a GOV who nationalises 'everything' is not going to work either. We have too many complex issue to deal with which is why we need the broadest possible engagement on the issue. One party will never have all the answers for a peaceful & prosperous future. We ALL need public education on 'what is an economy' and 'what are our options' and 'how do we implement it' !!! Only then can we truly be informed enough to choose who we want in power to govern - not rule - but manage our economic system for the benefit of all. The Economy is the only machine we have to reach the dream we all had in 1994. How do we get to 'the best possible one'?

The ongoing correlation of race to class in SA and the US is concretely based on lack of understanding, individual accountability mind set and market culture. If the specific aim is to build a skin colour switch in corporations SUCCESSFULLY the primary change needs to occur and is largely in the hands of, the majority zeitgeist and underpinnings. I agree with Mike, there is a sad, pervasive lack of understanding what it takes to build wealth for all. Structural short cuts like BEEE and incompetent state ownership have not worked. Changes in culture and thinking within the majority are essential.

Eskom is a highly technical entity requiring strong engineering expertise. Unfortunately the HR Department of Eskom went too far with Affirmative Action by overnight and aggressively getting rid of whites at all levels and replacing them with Africans of dubious quality. NamPower is one of the best run national electricity utilities in Africa and its success is attributed to being able to strike the right balance between the "old" and the "new"

CODESA was a very dishonest agreement. Who can in the right mind transfer skills to his/her competitor? Who can give capital or markets to his/her competitor? The ANC must have been stupid to agree to that.

I really have no idea what he is ACTUALLY trying to say. Mike, man, this guy can jump around and rattle on in long monologues. I am so tired of hearing rubbish like the JSE and corporate world is white. All major corporate companies have more black executives than white executives. Maybe people should stop making assumptions and start visiting these companies to see what they have actually done and is still doing to try create a diverse structure. I also do agree that the transfer of knowledge was handled badly, but by whose fault? In SOE's white workers, who were willing to train people, were retrenched in their thousands just to prove a point. Now, when everything seems to fall apart, it looks like they are now trying to blame them for not transferring skills. I know a lots of people that went through that process of just being cast aside. All they did, was to start multiple private businesses to make a living and ultimately consult back to SOE's to try save them when they collapsed.

The downfall has been clear for around 15 years. Black people need to take some ownership as they continue to vote and cheer for many of the issues in South Africa. when Zuma spend R246 million on his house, black people were fine with that there fought to allow that spending. when mama joy was paid millions and was sent around the world on tax paid money black people cheered her on. and on and on and on.

You can break race and class what are you talking about??? If you look there is more wealth black people (5.6million) then whites in the whole country(4.5million). please explain how you even can compare 4 million people to 50million people. How can you compare the avg white family with 1.5 children to a black family with an avg of 4 children. They cry that more black people don't have a house or don't have a job or so on but that will always be the case. its impossible to not have those numbers. But using numbers like that allows these people to let white, coloured and Indian people starve just because of their race.

@@HamandisheMpofu This is the second interview that I have done with Dr Harvey. I must admit, as I said in the interview, I am not sure what he is suggesting. On the one hand he has complained about the performance of State Owned Companies and blames this on corruption and hasty skills transfer. It is hard to argue this point. Dr Harvey then "balances the book" by saying that it is wrong that many listed companies are "white owned". This is a dangerous fallacy that I will challenge in the strongest way. For starters. listed companies are owned by shareholders and the largest shareholders are asset managers and pension funds. These funds started out with "white" money but this has changed as the country has changed. To refer to these companies as white owned is patently absurd. I will concede that many senior managers are white. Well I say three things to this: 1. Should all whites just quit and not be entitled to making a living? 2. If a white person started the business, should they not retain a significant shareholding? 3. These companies are run with a great deal of efficiency and that is why you can get a burger from a franchise in Poffadder; does it serve South Africa to do a similar change to the efficiency of the only part of the country that works? Does it matter to the social bean counters that these companies overwhelmingly employ black employees? Does it matter that the competent management of these companies generate a massive amount of tax for the fiscus? Consider my studio well and truly touched!
