In this lecture, we will understand the Crystal Oscillator & Piezoelectric effect in Electronic Principles & circuits.
A crystal oscillator is an electronic oscillator circuit that uses the mechanical resonance of a vibrating crystal of piezoelectric material to create an electrical signal with a precise frequency. The piezoelectric effect is the property of certain materials (like quartz) to generate an electric charge in response to mechanical stress and vice versa. In a crystal oscillator, an electric field applied across the crystal causes it to vibrate at its natural frequency, determined by its physical dimensions and material properties. This vibration creates a precise frequency signal that is used as a reference for timing in various electronic devices, such as computers, communication systems, and watches. Crystal oscillators offer high-frequency stability, low phase noise, and excellent long-term reliability, making them indispensable in many applications requiring accurate timing.
