The unmistakable shrill of bagpipes has been part of the Hong Kong soundscape since former British rulers introduced the Scottish woodwind instrument to the city in the late 1800s. Now, 25 years after Britain returned the former colony to China, bagpipes still feature at memorials and celebrations in the city.

Yes, it evokes Anglo Saxon superiority mindset and slaves hang over. While the slaves felt inferior and abandoned their own heritage and music instrument in favor of the master musical instrument. Real loser, 25 years and still getting a hang over with this musical instrument. Grow a spine please!

Don't understand why the negative comments about the bagpiper. All former colonies inherit something from their conquerors/colonisers. The English language itself has many words borrowed from French (from the Normans) and Norse (from the Vikings). At the start of Lee Kuan Yew's (Singapore's first Prime Minister) funeral procession, a lone Gurkha piper played 'Auld Lang Syne' from the top of the Istana (formerly the British Governor's residence).If an independent country like Singapore chooses to retain this British tradition, I don't see what the problem is with HK retaining it.

This is the overlooked positive legacy of colonialism. As bad as it is for those at the time, the lasting effects are the mixture of culture that would not have been possible otherwise. In an ideal world, India & Pakistan would have cricket without needing to be colonized, Hong Kong could have bagpipes etc. but overall we are so fortunate to live in a time where we can enjoy the benefits of sharing culture without the atrocities that go along with it. We’re one of the luckiest generations in the history of earth, crazy huh?

I think the trend of globalization in the past 200 years, though partly enabled through imperialism, would have led to the spread of cultures globally. I'd choose to look at the legacy of the freedom of press and speech, laissez faire business environment, and rule of law all from the British as "positive externalities" amongst a sea of dehumanizing policies and social prejudice.
@alvindurochermtl
@alvindurochermtl Жыл бұрын
People like you need to stop saying that the bagpipes are a legacy of British colonialism. This kind of talk is exactly what gives ammunition to the ignorant pro-China people to think bagpipes should be banned. The pipes have originated in Asia Minor a thousand years ago and it is fundamentally an Asian instrument. Many countries that were never colonialized still play it and it has nothing to do with imperialism or colonialism of any sort. The most you could say is that it was popularized by the Irish and the Scots in the contemporary context but even they have been the subject of English colonialism. It is not even technically a distinctively Western instrument per se by any stretch of the imagination so stop saying it is a product of colonialism to give the morons any pretext to ban it.
@XXXTENTAClON227
@XXXTENTAClON227 Жыл бұрын
@@alvindurochermtl while I understand part of your comment, claiming they are an Asian instrument which has more relevance to China is nonsense. I’m aware that Scotland and Ireland don’t exclusively use them, but they are 100% a European instrument with the earliest “depiction” being Ancient Greece. I’m guessing you’re referring to the classic Anatolia claim, which is the incorrect instrument. The earliest bagpipe that’s ever been discovered is in Germany, and the British Isles has referenced them in the 14th century. They do not exist verifiably prior to this, and all the claims are STILL EUROPEAN. If you’re talking about Brittany and Galicia as places who weren’t colonised but use bagpipes, you may want to read about the Brittonic Community. They are actually historically tied to Wales, and the original settlers of the British Isles. So while I understand your concerns, China would have to essentially blacklist all British influence that is even applicable to their own country. They’d have to also get rid of the University of Hong Kong, HSBC, remove reference to Christianity, stop teaching the English language, override their law etc. I know China has its problems but I don’t think even the CPC would go that far lol. I doubt China even understands the contextual difference between reference to Scotland, England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom. They literally used Highland bagpipes at the handover ceremony!

People get the history of the bagpipes mixed up...has nothing to do with British Colonization.... It is suspected that the instrument was built ca. 2000 BC. originated in the region of India, Pakistan and Iran and then brought to the west by the expeditions of Alexander the Great. Bagpipes already existed in ancient Egypt and Turkey and spread throughout Europe in Roman times. In Belgium, Germany, Scotland, Ireland, Galicia and Asturias (Spain) and Serbia and Albania they have become part of the culture over the centuries. If you love the instrument then just play it no matter where you come from...just like playing the guitar or harp...It is a fine instrument to learn if you like the sound of the pipes.... nothing wrong with it.

The 'pipes are just a tiny cultural artifact; ironically, best identified with Scotland, fighting their English captors. So really, the 'pipes are a finger in th eye of the colonizer who made Hong Kong the success that it is. Irony.

colonial legecies were so dangeours that makes you think your own ethnic/blood peoples were inferior than your master and make them play a divide & rule policy. this video was exactly that hongkongers simply cant get over their mental colonization. same things happens with INDIA as well
@jl63023
@jl63023 2 жыл бұрын
Why on earth should we be thinking with our ethnicity? We are our own people and Hong Kong is its own culture separate from China. It is a hybrid of British and Chinese and engaging in the British does not mean they hate the Chinese or think it's inferior. Just like how I, as a Caribbean, should not be expected to feign affection for Africa solely because of race, Hong Kong people should not be expected to feign affection for China for the same reason. We should be trying to move on from such racialist and ethnicist attitudes, not trying to resurrect them. If anything, you're the one with the inferiority complex if you can't comprehend that people can genuinely like cultures that aren't completely ancestral
@Debarghaya_Mukherjee
@Debarghaya_Mukherjee 2 жыл бұрын
@@jl63023 you as a carribbean doesn't have feign for africa cuz you might doesn't even know from which piece of land your ancestors were forced to migrate to carribbean for slavery. Also africa was an entire continent with diverse and different cultures, whereas china a nation dont know how did you compared both anyways. Also carribbean hardly use any native african languages other than English so culture of african ethnic peoples living in US carribbean and any other land during age if slavery literally lost their culture. Where as for Hong kong - china situation were very diff. Dont always compare every situation with each other it might looks same but its absolutely not.
@jl63023
@jl63023 2 жыл бұрын
@@Debarghaya_Mukherjee In my defense, I have seen people in prominent positions in my own region say similar remarks that "black people should reject colonial culture and restore African identity" by going all in and whatever African originated aspects remained. So, of course I imagined the situation would be somewhat similar but I guess I was mistaken with regard to the degree. But overall, it is still a case of hybridized culture. The parts of the British culture that have been accepted into HK culture will be their culture. 99 years of cultural separation doesn't go away and you can't just forcibly purge something that was essentially their culture for nearly a century. It would be wise to just accept that HK will never be (fully) Chinese culturally and will be its own unit from the mainland.
