Overview of the equipment used for ECM barrel creation. This setup is based on the work done by IvanTheTroll in his "But What About A Barrel?" guide.

Great overview of the equipment! I recently started printing the parts for an FCG-9 and I've been going around trying to learn more about the ECM process used to create the barrels.

friend I have a problem, today I started the cutting process but I can't reduce the internal diameter, the water turns brown, I'm using the same water pump as you and I have a power source adjustable at 7.5 amp, I don't know what I may be doing wrong...
@lordkyleofearth2 жыл бұрын
Is your boring rod getting smaller? If you have signs that cutting is taking place, but the tube diameter is not changing, you possibly have the wires reversed. In that case, you are using the tube to cut the rod.

@@lordkyleofearth the positive pole goes at the end and the negative pole at the barrel, is that correct?
@lordkyleofearth2 жыл бұрын
Negative goes to the cutting tool and positive goes to the work piece (whatever you are trying to cut).

Why do you reduce the amperage for the pump from 5 to 3? I see in the documentation they also recommend to buy a 3a charger for the pump when it's a 5a unit. Is this because at 5a the water flow is too fast? Or is it more because the price up from a 3a charger to a 5a charger isn't worth it? I only have a 5a charger, hoping it will be okay :/
@lordkyleofearth2 жыл бұрын
5a is probably fine. You only need the 3a for adequate flow. At 5a, some pump models can make enough pressure to pop hoses free. If that happens, you'll just need better clamps.
@bruddaozzo2 жыл бұрын
@@lordkyleofearth Thank you! I've bought the metal hose clamps so fingers crossed that's enough

My water pump which could pump 5 L /min was broken i bought a new one who can pump 4 l/min what do u need to take into consideration when u have a less powerfull water pump in ECM?
@lordkyleofearth3 жыл бұрын
As long as you have electrolyte flow, you should be good. Lower volumes mean less sludge removal, at some point, but I'm not sure where that line is at-you'll probably have to find it experimentally. FWIW, I cut my early barrels with an aquarium pump that was fairly low flow and built essentially zero pressure. From that, you're likely fine with that 4L pump.

Hey, can that pump using as sucktion pump and would it handle air bubles when liquid no awaible for "draining" I would need it for similar project which needs dirty water suction continuously even if water does not run every moment, purpose is to keep sheet workpiece clean and dry as possible

It's just a 12v RV water pump. I'm not sure if it'd need your needs or not, but there are a bunch out there to choose from.

How long do you run the current? If you run it too long won't it completely erode the barrel?
@lordkyleofearth3 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Ivan's ECM guide has the timing intervals (assuming 8.5a is used on a 4" barrel). If you overshoot your targets, you'll likely ruin the barrel.

What power supply do you recommend
@lordkyleofearth3 жыл бұрын
Anything that can push 10 or more amps and, preferably, that offers a constant current function. An ATX power supply and buck converter works fine.
@PaulHenning842 жыл бұрын
I think the Longwei one that doesn't have the course and fine adjustments on it, 10 amps. They're like $80.

One last question, where do I get the .stl file?
@lordkyleofearth7 ай бұрын
Odysee is the current host for related files, but you can also just search for "home ECM" and it should get you where you need to be.

Would a 12v 5A plug in power supply from Amazon work for the power supply?
@lordkyleofearth2 жыл бұрын
The more amps you can push, the better. 5a will work, but it'll be about half as fast and you'll have reduced surface quality. If you can get the 10a version, it's worth the extra money.

What happens if the bohring rod dosen't not straight throw the barrel i mean throw the barrel but not straight what happens
@lordkyleofearth3 жыл бұрын
You'd get eccentric boring, which would make for a pretty much garbage barrel (also, possibly an unsafe one, depending on how eccentric).

If u make one 9x19 barrel using this method how many can u do with the same salt water left?
@lordkyleofearth2 жыл бұрын
You can let the water settle and transfer it to a different vessel for the next job. Although, an even better strategy would be to add 50g (or so) of citric acid to the mixture. This will allow the sludge to stay in solution better and reduce the formation of extremely toxic hexavalent chromium.
