Everyone always asks how can 3D printed concrete be better for the environment? Here is a potential solution!
Want to see a virtual 360 tour of all the places I visit and support my journey? Sign up for the Virtual Village of 3D Printed Houses at automate.construction/signup
40% off for the first 2 weeks until September using code "FoundingMember" (this discount will apply permanently for the early members that join before September!
This startup in the Netherlands is changing the way concrete impacts the environment! By developing a new mixture that has similar structural properties to concrete without the harmful environmental side effects, Omlab wants to change the long term implications of construction for good.
I got to meet with founders Margreet Van Uffelen & Huub Looze to get a tour around their facility seeing their printer and past prints. They shared the origin story of Omlab along with their vision for where the company will go in the future.

My thought. Use shredded hemp hurds to help absorb moisture during curing. It also makes it negative CO2 with the hemp encapsulated in the mix. Great job. Thanks

A very good thought! I was also wondering about polylactic acid from plant starch as a thermosetting binder that is waterproof but breathable….

Wonderful this alternative cement looks more like clay and is great! Normal cement is very harmful to urban space and is also a very bad thermal insulator. For example in Brazil large buildings in concrete brings visual and depressive pollution.

Very cool as always. Added to a playlist to watch the whole thing later. It's a tough sell to tell somebody their house is built out of calcium and toilet paper ;D But we'll figure that out.

I would start a little bit simpler, u copy a cementblock and produce those, there are all kind of designs of a cementblock. If a printer can print 24/7 it might be cheaper than pouring a cementblock. After that u can print beams with rebar in it, ect u could do a prefab on location and make it like legos to put it together.

so, if allow made a recap,....So They star using RAW Materials, Like CHALK, combined with CEMENT, and Celullosa from Recicled PAPER (wasted toiled papers)...so that elements are combined with CEMENT....BUT How strong is this BLOCK????... And how resisten to WATER is this BLOCK????.....Because, I tried, follow all his combinations of Material to try Build In 3D printed, ...But i FAIL when, made a Block, with resist to Water and Weight...Just this turn in Crack and Brake all his structure.. can you made a Video explain his caractertics????...thank for read my coment...

@@luisloreto843 The binder is the sludge made from concentrated human sewage. The proteins in the sewage harden to form the binder. The sand is chalk, calcite, not like beach sand. I hope this helps you.

No cement is being used! The calcite is from drinking water production (byproduct when enhardening drinking water), the Kaumera is a Dutch invention and a byproduct of wastewatertreatment ( kaumera.com/english/ ) and the cellulose too. The cellulose is sanitised and controlled, have a look at www.recell.eu/ The strength of the material is like cellular cement blocks, based on research by student chemischal technology.

thankyou for sharing. Is it possible other sources can be used for cellulose ? In Australia we have palm trees and banana tree plants which are considered a nuisance waste problem , they are very high in Cellulose. Other countries will have different options for waste materials. I have researched the use of Fly Ash based geopolymer in Australia but now the biggest cement suppliers have cornered control of that former waste product.
@omlab
@omlab 3 жыл бұрын
Ofcourse, certainly if they are a difficult waste problem! It would be nice though to start with a higher value than cellulose, that can always be the last step in the process of using resources likes palm trees etc. I can imagine there are examples online already of how to use it as a material for building etc. Low-carbon, renewable!

That would be a good ICF type block. My only question about this is supply. How much toilet paper can you salvage without introducing contaminants?

I'm interested in finding out how energy-intensive (or chemical-intensive?) the sensitization process is. I'm no gastroenterologist, but there's no way I'd want any leftover gut biome (latent or not) living in my walls!! If it can be made with cellulose scavenged from sewage, why not from regular recycled paper fiber? Seems like that would be a much easier sell.

I would definitely be curious about heavy testing on this product either as a cast style form or 3d printed forms. Like how weather resistant this new bio-cret is, how much pressure it can handle. Compared to traditional concrete.

The environmental benefit wouldn't be limited to 3D printing. If anything traditional concrete pouring is more forgiving with the mix due to a homogeneous set instead of lamination. Although I suspect this is more about overcoming yet another flaw in 3D printing that you don't have in mold set.
