Nest is the most affordable, but Ecobee helps you save more.

Summary:
Ecobee 3 Lite is great for those who want to maximize savings and comfort. While the new Nest Thermostat is the smarter out of the box and more affordable.
Let’s talk about Ecobee’s three advantages over Nest.
#1 - HomeKit Support
Nest will work fine for iPhone users, but Ecobee gives iPhone users easier temperature access.
Ecobee can be controlled with Siri, the Apple Home app, or in the iPhone's control center (a swipe down from the top right corner).
#2 - SmartSensors
SmartSensors are tiny golf ball-sized devices that read occupancy and temperature in any room they’re placed in.
With a couple of sensors in your house, Ecobee will understand the true temperature of your house by averaging the temperatures from each of your sensors. Sensors are an advantage for large or old houses with temperature irregularities, or houses with the thermostat in a strange location.
If the sensors detect no one is home after two hours, the system goes into away mode automatically.
The Follow Me feature sends the temperature data to the thermostat ONLY if the room has people in it. For example, before owning my Ecobee, my bedroom got hot at night with my door closed. Now, my room stays at a cool 61 degrees all night because my bedroom is the only room with people in it, so it’s the only sensor used for my sleep mode.
#3 - Temperature Swing
Nest has a one-point temperature swing.
Ecobee lets you adjust the temperature swing (0.5-3.0 degrees). With my heat set to 66 degrees and a two-point swing, the heat won't turn on until the temperature reaches 64 degrees.
If you're fine with a little extra discomfort, the swing lets your HVAC system run less often, which may improve the lifespan of your system.
The other benefit? My furnace is loud. I’d rather have it run for longer, but less often.

Unlike other reviewers you give your opinion at the beginning. Excellent. It makes me want to watch the entire video. With other KZfaq reviews that make you watch until the end to hear their final decision is frustrating. I often just skip to the end. But for some reason I watch your entire videos. Weird how that works for me. Lol Keep up the good work.

Wow! This is the first video I found that actually explains how these thermostats are powered which is hugely important if you only have a 4 wire system. Not having to mess with batteries is a plus for Ecobee. Loosing the rotating bezel for the nest is a big minus for Nest.

@@camsecore The Learning is definitely a great feature, but for me after awhile, there's nothing for it to learn, if your work/life patterns are pretty consistent. So early on, it was nice to just adjust it and know that Nest was working behind the scenes setting schedules.

Excellent explanation about all products. Thank you! I have currently in my first floor one Nest Learning Thermostat because I don't have a C-wire. However, I was thinking about replace my second floor thermostat which is a very old one by an EcoBee and go thru all the problem of installing a PEK. So, if I have one EcoBee on the second floor and A Nest on the first floor will they work in sync? Will they talk to each other? Or it is more probable that they will create confusion to the HVAC system?

Here is the deal . the UX on the ecobee is outstanding. That being said, my ecobee could not adequaely control the temperature of my house. My house is a 2 story(~2600 sq ft) and zoned. The ecobee could only control the temperature to within a 10 degree range. The reason is that ecobee averages the temperature over a 20-30 minute period (confirmed by their engineering staf). The temperature that you see on the display and log files is the avergaed data and not the real time temperature. You can confirm this by placing a digital thermometer near a sensor and see the difference. I returned mine. Good luck.

Contrary to intuition, multistage/multispeed HVAC systems are more efficient when they run longer (because they run at lower speed/effort) than single stage systems and the energy to shut off and then turn on a single stage system is higher. That's what several experts and HVAC companies claim, at least. Overall, I resonate with your observations... though right now I'm leaning toward a Honeywell T10 because the Nest (ugly version) doesn't work with mult-stage/multi-speed HVAC systems... certainly not ours.

Great video. I have used both and would never recommend a nest. If you travel and forget to change the batteries in the nest you could have problems while you are away. That's just one of many reasons why I would never recommend it. The ecobee works with many other systems, including my security system and my flair vents. If you are looking to buy a smart thermostat, check with the gas or electric company first, they sometimes have great deals.

What about the c wire for the nest thermostat? I will have to run a new wire or add the power connector. And I don't know how to add the power connector to my heat only system. I have only 2 wires currently attached to my thermostat.
@suzanneseale9543
@suzanneseale9543 2 жыл бұрын
@@camsecore Wrong. Here's where the google website says a c wire is required. Yes, the thermostat works manually but no extra features work. No reason to get a wifi thermostat then. When a google installer came to my house and said he would not install the google power connector because it could hurt my system. I was happy google paid to send someone though. I did find a 24volt power cord I could attached to the c and ch to bring power to the thermostat. FROM GOOGLE Learn about the common or C wire Nest thermostats are designed to use very little power, and in many cases they can use your system’s heating and cooling wires to get enough consistent power. But sometimes, you may need to connect a common wire (C wire) or power accessory, like the Nest Power Connector, to make your system compatible. Unlike other wires connected to your thermostat, a C wire doesn’t control heating or cooling functions. It only provides constant power to your thermostat.

Another thing to note is the Ecobee 3 has a PIN lockout whereas the Nest 2020 model does not. I have some jerkoff roommates that blast the temperature and I would love to lock them out of the thermostat. I am replacing my Nest with the Ecobee for this reason alone.

If your bedroom gets disproportionately hot compared to your house, you need to adjust the vents around your home. Just having your thermostat use the temp of your room is a big waste of energy and the rest of the house will be much colder/hotter than should be.
@IFoundMyBrand
@IFoundMyBrand 3 жыл бұрын
@@camsecore But if your thermostat is using your overly hot room as the temperature to adjust, then it’s likely the rest of your house will be cooled much more than it needs to be; for example, your home will be cooled to 63 degrees as your HVAC tries to cool your room to 68 degrees. If you slightly close some of the vents around your house, they will get less air and your remaining open vents (room vents) will get more air, thus a greater temperature change. Tech is great but people often overlook mechanics. Great video tho and I hope you do the Ecobee5 vs Nest3 video!!! Cheers!

3:33 I guess for me this would be a downside with the ecobee. I prefer the very minimalist look of the Nest, assuming you can clean up your wall enough to not need the trim plate. With the rebates from my power company, the Nest is half the price of the ecobee. Also it looks like all Nest thermostats are now compatible with Matter, which should work with Apple HomeKit. Ecobee does still look like the better thermostat overall, but the Nest should be perfectly adequate for me.
@camsecore
@camsecore Жыл бұрын
As a reviewer, I'm pumped for Matter! Platform compatibility will be something I no longer need to talk about. But I wonder how smooth the transition will be with older devices. As of now, the only way to update a Nest Thermostat to matter via firmware is with an Android phone. I know iOS 16.1 made it possible to setup Matter devices inside the Home app, but have you tried it yet? I still haven't.

I get that these are the most popular in the market, but why do most reviewers only focus on two brands? This does the consumer a disservice because people really end up thinking there are only two choices. Eventually, you are stuck with what the two brands offer instead of what works for you because the others have dropped off the map.
